Viking-Flashmobs in Los Angeles
In Los Angeles trifft sich öfter mal ein Mob Vikinger („Norse Hollywood Dining Vikings“), stürmt ein Restaurant oder auch eins von diesen schwedischen Möbelhäusern und lässt dort die Sau raus, Viking-Style. Es gibt einen Grund, warum Northlanders von Brian Wood schon länger zu meinen Lieblingscomics gehört: „Oh yeah. We’re thinking of making buttons that say, ‘Vikings eat pirates and s**t ninjas’“.
Being a viking in Los Angeles isn’t easy. In fact, it takes a pillage to do it right.
But that isn’t stopping an ad hoc group of vikings from raising a ruckus in Los Angeles restaurants, all in the name of fun.
The group calls itself the “Norse Hollywood Dining Vikings” and, true to their name, they dress up in various variations of viking gear in order to go to nice restaurants and eat, drink and be merry — other guests be damned!
The leader of this roving band of meal-seeking marauders is Tony Swatton, who, by day, is a master blacksmith and the designer of custom-made weapons, armor and other props for television and film.

La Machines Walking Gardens in Dessau
Nächste Woche findet in Dessau das 13. Farbfest statt, dass sich dieses Jahr einen ziemlichen Steampunk-Anstrich gibt und bei dem auch La Machines Walking Gardens zu sehen sind, über die ich hier schonmal gebloggt hatte.
Andreas vom Bauhaus Dessau schreibt mir: „Für die Expedition baut La Machine einen Hybriden aus Flugmaschine und viktorianischem Gewächshaus, ein Ungetüm aus Glas und Eisen, das hier in Dessau landen wird. An Bord eine ganze Reihe von Botanikern, Technikern, Navigatoren in geheimer Mission. Spätestens ab Freitag, den 3. September sollen die Franzosen in der Stadt sein.
Das Ganze gehört zum Programm des Dessauer Farbfestes, das das Bauhaus gemeinsam mit der Stadt jedes Jahr veranstaltet. Heuer gibt es dazu Flugmaschinen, Dampf und Eisen, Aether, Tesla, Mystizismus. Das Bauhausgebäude selbst wird sich dazu am 4. September in ein phantastisches Luftschiff verwandeln. Die Freunde der Fährnis, jener internationale Aeronautenclub, bekannt aus Thomas Pynchons “Gegen den Tag”, werden das Gebäude am Abend des 4. September entern und damit, so der Plan, gegen Mitternacht in den weltweiten Äther starten. Endlich soll das Bauhaus wieder seiner eigentlichen Bestimmung folgen: obskuren Forschungsaufträgen und tollkühnen Abenteuern in der Hohlwelt.“

Heute ist übrigens noch für viereinhalb Stunden Read Comics in Public-Day. Habt Ihr natürlich alle dran gedacht, oder? Ich wollte heute morgen noch drauf hinweisen, da habe ich aber geschlafen. Und dann war ich weg. Comics lesen’n'stuff.

Chemical Education Crayons
Sehr clevere Idee von Etsy-Seller QueInteresante. Bitte sofort für deutsche Grundschulen umsetzen.
Children play and draw with crayons practically every day, so why not make the experience more educational? This listing is for a set of 120 labels to stick in the crayons in a basic 120 pack of Crayola crayons so that while children are coloring, they are also exposed to the names of chemicals that will make those colors! So instead of thinking “I want green” they will think “I want Barium Nitrate Ba(NO3)2 Flame” and then when they take chemistry in high school and their teacher sets some gas on fire and it makes a green color and they ask the class what chemical it was your student will know it was Barium! Genius!
Underwater Bubble-Room

Maggie: Where did this idea come from?
Jordan: I was in the shower, one day about four years ago, and I was just thinking about how cool it would be to have an underwater “fort” I wasn’t sure how to make it happen at the time, but that’s when the brainstorming started. So I called my brother Logan and we started talking about ways to do it.
Our original version was just a net stretched tight and secured to four rocks—one at each corner—and then a piece of plastic pulled under the net and an air bubble released into it from a scuba tank. Because the air is displacing water, the upward force of the bubble is equivalent to the downward force of the same volume of water on shore. So a bubble 10 cubic feet in volume would be basically 74.8 “gallons” of air at 8.35 lbs per gallon, which means a 10 cu. ft. bubble has 624.58 pounds of upward force! Pretty substantial.
