End of the Year-Mix: The Moon is a crowded Place
(Mixcloud Direktmoon, via DrLiMa)
(via Cinematze)

The End of the Fantastic Four

We’ve got a lot of pretty big milestones that are coming up to. We’ve got Issue #600, and we’ve got the 50th anniversary.“ Das Ganze ist also nur der Auftakt zum großen Fantastic Four-Jubiläum.)

Analysts at BetUS.com posted the following odds on which member of the Fantastic Four will die in January:
Which member of the Fantastic Four will die:
Human Torch 4/1
The Invisible Woman 1/1
Mister Fantastic 6/1
The Thing 100/1
Hier ein Interview mit Autor Jonathan Hickman bei Newsarama: „Nrama: Marvel has stated that when the War of 4 Cities ends, “one member of the Fantastic Four will have breathed their last.” Is that just hype or is it real? – Hickman: Oh, no, it’s real. You can’t do these things without there being some weight to it.“
Vom Telegraph: Fantastic Four to kill off key character.
But is death really the end and, more so, will it be permanent? After all, death has visited the Fantastic Four, which was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and first appeared in 1961, before.
Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman, supposedly died, but that was just a ruse. Similarly, her husband, Reed Richards, aka Mr Fantastic, was thought dead after being caught in a blast with his arch-enemy, Dr. Doom. Instead of death, however, Richards and his nemesis were snatched away to another dimension.
This time, however, Marvel is adamant, noting that once the current story ends in No. 588, the Fantastic Four will cease to exist.

Tod Brownings „Freaks“
(Vimeo Direktfreaks, via Dangerous Minds)
Despite the extensive cuts, the film was still negatively received by audiences, and remained an object of extreme controversy. Today, the parts that were removed are considered lost. Browning, famed at the time for his collaborations with Lon Chaney and for directing Bela Lugosi in Dracula (1931), had trouble finding work afterward, and this effectually brought his career to an early close. Because its deformed cast was shocking to moviegoers of the time, the film was banned in the United Kingdom for 30 years. Beginning in the early 1960s, Freaks was rediscovered as a counterculture cult film, and throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the film was regularly shown at midnight movie screenings at several movie theaters in the United States. In 1994, Freaks was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. It was ranked 15th on Bravo TV’s list of the 100 Scariest Movie Moments.
Among the characters featured as “freaks” were Peter Robinson (“the human skeleton”); Olga Roderick (“the bearded lady”); Frances O’Connor and Martha Morris (“armless wonders”); and the conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton. Among the microcephalics who appear in the film (and are referred to as “pinheads”) were Zip and Pip (Elvira and Jenny Lee Snow) and Schlitzie, a male named Simon Metz who wore a dress mainly due to incontinence, a disputed claim. Also featured were the intersexual Josephine Joseph, with her left/right divided gender; Johnny Eck, the legless man; the completely limbless Prince Randian (also known as The Human Torso, and mis-credited as “Rardion”); Elizabeth Green the Stork Woman; and Koo-Koo the Bird Girl, who suffered from Virchow-Seckel syndrome or bird-headed dwarfism, and is most remembered for the scene wherein she dances on the table.

DIY Transhumanism
Anonym is a biohacker, a woman who has spent the last several years learning how to extend her own senses by putting tiny magnets and other electronic devices under her own skin, allowing her to feel electromagnetic fields, or — if her latest project works — even magnetic north.
Since doctors won’t help her, she does it in her own apartment, sterilizing her equipment (needles, scalpels, vegetable peelers) with vodka. Good anesthetic is largely impossible to buy, so she screams a little, and sometimes passes out. But it’s worth it, for what’s on the other side.
“Bodily health takes a big fuck-off second seat to curiosity,” she says. “Though it hasn’t really changed my life, it’s just made me more curious.”
This is DIY transhumanism, the fringe of a movement that itself lies well outside the mainstream of philosophy, ethics, technology and science.
R.I.P. Elisabeth Beresford – Bye Womble-Mum
(via io9)
Vom Guardian: Elisabeth Beresford obituary – Prolific writer who enjoyed her greatest success with the recycling Wombles.
Elisabeth Beresford, who has died aged 84, enjoyed her greatest success with the creation of the Wombles. The family motto of the colourful underground creatures – “making good use of bad rubbish” – sprang from a concern of the writer’s that chimed with the growing ecological awareness of the next four decades. Famously, the inspiration for the figures came on a Boxing Day walk on Wimbledon Common, south-west London, during which her daughter, Kate, misnamed it Wombledon Common.
The Communist Manifesto (Illustrated)
(Youtube Direktcommie, via Geekosystem)
George Rigakos is taking the “anything but textbook” approach, creating a four-part comic book series on the Communist Manifesto, featuring original works by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. “There is nothing like a comic book and graphic novel to grip a reader,” said Rigakos, who plans to use the comic to teach political economy at Carleton University. […]
The 162-year-old Manifesto has often been considered ahead of its time, taking an analytical approach to the history and concept of class struggle. But it is the concept of villains, victims and heroes that enables the Manifesto to be easily transformed into a comic, according to Rigakos. “The original work of Marx and Engels focused on the bourgeoisie, the proletariat and their heroes – the Communists – which will each constitute separate comic books in the series,” he said

Bobby Farrell R.I.P. – Bye Daddy Cool
(Dailymotion Direktdaddy, via MeFi)
The singer was found dead in a hotel room in St Petersburg, Russia where he had been performing, John Seine said.
Farrell, he continued, had complained of breathing problems before and after the show on Wednesday. The cause of his death has yet to be established.
Radiohead For Haiti: Fan-created, pay-what-you-want Charity-DVD + Torrent

In anderen Worten: AWESOME!
Von Torrentfreak:
In January 2010, Radiohead performed at the Haiti Relief concert at the Henry Ford theater in Los Angeles and the event was filmed and its audio recorded, not by the band or show organizers, but by their fans.
Understandably, that footage went on to be scattered far and wide but thanks to the work of three fans – inez, formengr, andrea – the video and audio has been painstakingly collated to make a two DVD set of the event, which was limited on the day to just 1,400 people present. The trio then decided to make the work available on the Internet for the masses, but supported by a great idea to help those in need.
