Today is Read Comics in Public-Day
Heute ist Read Comics in Public-Day und hätte mich Marco nicht daran erinnert, ich hätte ihn auf der Couch weggebummelt, obwohl ich mir den Tag im Kalender angekreuzt hatte. So aber schwang ich meinen Arsch vor drei Stunden vom Sofa, klemmte mir DC Comics Flash Retroactive #1 (70s) unter den Arm und latschte zu meinem Türken um die Ecke. Dort setzt ich mich hin, bestellte ein Köfte und ‘ne Cola und fing an, in der Öffentlichkeit ein Comic zu lesen, garniert mit Hackfleischbällchen und viel Scharf.
Und jetzt lege ich mich wieder auf die Couch, verpenne den Rest vom Sonntag, schau noch ein paar Star Trek TOS (S1) auf BluRay (und vielleicht nochmal James Bond, die Filme gehören zu den best-restauriertesten BluRays, die ich kenne) und lese noch ein paar Comics. In private, this time.
388 Tricks and Tools from James Bond
Das Blog Iguana hat grade den fünften und letzten Teil seiner Bond-Reihe gepostet und damit nicht weniger als 388 (!) Tricks und Gadgets aus James Bond-Filmen zusammengetragen. Die lerne ich jetzt alle auswendig und dann dürft Ihr mich nur noch Sean Connery nennen. Die behaarte Brust dazu hab’ ich ja schon. Weiter unten hab ich alle Teile einzeln verlinkt, Snip aus dem Best of:
- [Dr. No] While this is not explicitly said, we can assume that Bond uses a business card that features just his phone number. This might be done in order not to give too much away about his location or occupation, including not mentioning his name so that he can assume any alias. Update: Bond, in fact, uses a business card featuring Universal Exports and a phone number which is answered by MI6 as Universal Exports. (Thanks Jamie!)
- [Dr. No] In order to secure his hotel room, he applies a type of powder to the catches on his suitcase and a damp hair on a door. When the door is opened, the hair falls off, letting him know that someone has been snooping. Likewise, the powder gives away prying fingers.
- [Dr. No] Hiding from the enemy, Bond gets a reed cut, and uses it as a makeshift snorkel underwater to prevent getting seen by humans and smelled by dogs.
- [From Russia With Love] When attacked by boats, Bond rolls gasoline drums into the water, then shoots them to create explosions that destroy the boats.
- [Goldfinger] When fighting attackers, he sends one into a tub of water, then throws a lamp into the tub to electrocute the man.
- [Thunderball] Bond records audio in his room using a tape recorder when he goes out. Then, when he comes back, he replays the recording speedily to find noises of intruders to tip him off where the intruder is.
- [Thunderball] In the poor position of being surrounded by the enemy, Bond shoots at both sides, then gets out of the way, which causes the enemy to turn against each other.
- [Diamonds Are Forever] Bond pretends to be making out with himself, wrapping his arms around himself in the dark to deceive others.
- [Live and Let Die] Bond combines his aftershave and a cigar to create a fire to scare away a snake.
- [Moonraker] In order to discover the location of the safe, Bond asks about it, then watches where the eyes moved to find the general location.
- [Moonraker] To travel quickly, Bond grabs a chain and uses it to zip line across the landscape on a nearby wire.
- [For Your Eyes Only] Bond grabs a nearby table umbrella, and uses it first as a spear, then as a makeshift parachute.
- [Never Say Never Again] When fighting, he throws a nearby beaker of fluid in opponent’s eyes to temporarily blind him.
- [A View to A Kill] Bond forced underwater, Bond sees watchers, so he stays under, using tire’s air to breathe in order to fake his death.
- [The Living Daylights] In order to distract pursuers, Bond places a decoy in a phone booth, using a cello case covered with a coat.
- [GoldenEye] A target, Bond uses gas tanks as a barrier to prevent his assailants from shooting because that would blow everything up.
- [Tomorrow Never Dies] In order to incapacitate a chaser, Bond throws a steel cord around the rotor of the helicopter.
- [Tomorrow Never Dies] Bond kills a member of the opposition with a knife, then fakes the man as himself to fake his death.
- [The World Is Not Enough] Bond’s glasses, Blue Tinted Black Framed Sunglasses, allow him to see through clothes for weapons.
- [Die Another Day] In order to escape from a falling vehicle, Bond fashions a waterboard together with a parachute and in a practice known as kite-surfing, gets away.

BibliOdyssey hat eine tolle Sammlung oller Cephalopoden-Illus von Adolf Naef vom Beginn des letzten Jahrhunderts. Der Mann hatte auch mit Ernst Haeckel zusammengearbeitet, dessen „Kunstformen der Natur“ ich hier vor Jahren mal hatte und die wahrscheinlich die bekannteste Sammlung alter Natur-Illustrationen ist.
Adolf Naef (1883-1949) was a Swiss zoologist and palaeontologist, famous for his work on cephalopods and systematics.
[He] studied at the University of Zurich, under the guidance of Arnold Lang, a former Professor of Jena University and close friend of Ernst Haeckel*. Naef visited and worked in Anton Dorn’s Zoological Station in Naples, Italy in 1908, studying the squid Loligo vulgaris, the subject of his dissertation.

Chronicle Books hat eine Komplettausgabe von Al Jaffees Fold Ins aus dem MAD Mag herausgegeben. Die vier Bände im Schuber sehen der Gesamtausgabe von Don Martin ziemlich ähnlich und beides macht sich sicher wunderbar in meinem Regal… bis es wegen des Gewichts dann zusammenbricht. Must have.
Al Jaffee’s ‘Fold-Ins’, which have graced the back page of “MAD Magazine” since 1964, have become an icon of American humour, issue after issue, year after year, each fold-in requires the reader to simply fold tab A to tab B to reveal the hidden gag- a simple idea that masks both the undeniable artistic ingenuity and comic-timing at play in Jaffee’s work. ‘The MAD Fold-In Box’ places Jaffee in his rightful place as the reigning clown prince of comic art.

Onyx Ashanti hat einen Live-Controller für elektronische Musik erfunden, der seine Körperbewegungen in Beats und Bleeps umsetzt. Oder so ähnlich. Onyx hat schon mit Marshall Jefferson, Soul II Soul und Basement Jaxx rumgemacht und scheint zu wissen, was er da tut. Ich weiß es nicht, find’s aber ziemlich cool. The beatjazz controller is really a three-way wireless sensor network that converts his finger, hand, and breath movements, into musical control data, which allows him to play synthesizers with dance-like movements and saxophone-like fingerings. In addition, Onyx created a light based “element narration” subsystem that relates sound types to colors so the audience has a better idea of which part of the arrangement that Onyx is playing at any given time. the system was designed specifically for beatjazz and the combination of the two together create a never before realized marriage of sound, light and motion.

Dazu muss man sich zwar registrieren und die Seite ist auch Flash-Gedöns, ich weiß das, aber ich will ganz einfach, dass Ihr das jetzt macht. So.

Malcolm hatte gestern bereits bei den Filmfreunden den Trailer zum neuen Hunter S. Thompson-Film mit dessen Kumpel Johnny Depp gepostet: The Rum Diary. Jetzt hat Marc von Dangerous Minds einen Brief von Thompson aus dem Jahr 2001 ausgegraben, als der Film schon eine Weile in der Produktionshölle rumlag.
The film version of Hunter S. Thompson’s novel “The Rum Diary” is finally hitting the screen on October 28 after a long and tumultuous trip through development hell. The movie had been optioned by now-defunct production company The Shooting Gallery who never managed to get it off the ground.
