Wild Palms
Als ich gestern eine Stunde zu spät zum Occupy Berlin-Treffpunkt kam (argh!), war natürlich keiner mehr da. Also ging ich nach Hause (nachdem ich eine Weile in die Sonne dieses fantastischen Herbstwetters geblinzelt und den Mädchen am Alex auf die Hintern geguckt hatte) und machte ein bisschen mit meinem neuen Spielzeug rum.
Native Instruments hat mir nach diesem Posting über ihren neuen S2-Controler für Traktor das Ding tatsächlich geschickt – Freiwillig! Ich hab’ nix gemacht! – und das Ding rockt. Das geht alles sehr viel angenehmer, als noch bei meinem alten, selbstgemappten Ding. Plug’n'Play, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes, man verliert sich allerdings manchmal in den Cutup-Möglichkeiten und spielt zu sehr mit den Effekten rum, weil’s geht und fast schon zu bequem ist, siehe die Tracklist dieses Mixes. 80 Tracks in 6 Stunden. Jeez. Ich muss allerdings auch dazu sagen, dass ich Tracks bei ruhigeren Sets länger spiele und das hier ist für meine Verhältnisse sehr ruhig, sehr housy mit Trance- und Dub-Techno-Sprengseln. Bleibt aber natürlich nicht so, hintenraus gibt’s ordentlich auf die Zwölf. An einer Stelle hab’ ich ziemlich verkackt, weil ich schlauerweise die Kopfhörer auf die Jogwheels legen wollte (bei 2:26 irgendwo), ansonsten ist der Mix sauber.

Kleine Anekdote: Ich wäre fast rausgeschmissen worden, weil ich angeblich auf einem der Tische rumgemalt hätte. Was ich nicht getan habe… aber beinahe. Kurz bevor ich ging, standen da ein paar Jungs um ein paar Tische und taggten darauf rum. Ich dachte, das wäre irgendeine Aktion, griff mir ‘nen Pinsel und selbstverständlich kam genau da einer angestürmt und maulte mich an, was mir denn einfiele, da auf den Tischen rumzumalen. Ich so: „Ich hab’ nix gemacht!“ was natürlich sehr überzeugend klang, da ich ja noch den Pinsel in der Hand hielt. Dann klärten wir die Situation („Ich hab’ nix gemacht!“) und mehr ist nicht passiert. Jeez, wie in der Schule früher (mit dem Unterschied, dass wir damals wirklich was gemacht und in einer Aktion alle Klos vollgetaggt hatten, woraufhin sie sogar die Cops und einen Graphologen holten… aber das ist eine andere Geschichte).

Jae Rhim Lee on TED: My mushroom burial suit
Vor ein paar Wochen hatte ich über Jae Rhim Lees Mushroom Death Suit gebloggt, ein Anzug, in dem Pilze den eigenen Körper nach dem Tod maximal effizient zersetzen. Damals kam hatte sie grade frisch ihren TED-Talk absolviert und ich hatte versprochen, den zu posten, sobald er online sei, voilà. Nettes Video vom Burning Man 2011, das drei Tage vorher beginnt und alle Tage des Festivals in 5 Minuten zeigt: „From dust to dust, this time lapse covers over 5 weeks including the preparation of the event, from before the trash fence erection and after basically everyone except for DPW trickles out. Other than a few occasional pauses, the main event goest by at a rate of 3 hours every second.“
Massive Galleries of vintage retrofuturistic Toys from Japan
Dark Roasted Blend hat ein sehr schönes Posting mit einer Galerie voller oller japanischer SciFi-Spielzeuge. Das wäre alleine schon super genug, aber dann habe ich mir mal die Quellen angesehen und die Website japansuperfantasticmodel.com hat mich umgehauen. Hunderte Bilder von japanischen Retrofuture-Toys, eins toller als das andere. Leider ist die Website extrem altmodisch zu bedienen, weshalb ich einen Daniel Plainview gepullt, den Milkshake der Website getrunken habe und alle 685 Bilder in dieses Flickr-Set hochgeladen habe: Japanese Toy Models (1960-1978). The Giant Eye of Brooklyns Watertower
Schönes Projekt von Marcos Zotes für das Bright To Light Festival in New York: Ein riesiges, sich bewegendes Auge, projeziert auf den Milton Street Wasserturm in Brooklyn. CCTV/Creative Control seeks to question the oppressive mechanisms and discourses implemented in the city through the temporary appropriation of public space. The intervention consists of a video projection displaying an over-sized eye onto the lower surface of the 10-storey-hight Milton Street water tower in Brooklyn, New York. Still the highest point in the area, until it is dwarfed by new gentrification plans, the water tower exists as a relic of the neighbourhood’s industrial past. The intervention temporarily transforms this iconic landmark into a discernible CCTV tower, raising questions of private control over public space in the urban context.

This curious creature has been found at all stratigraphic levels, often wrapped around Vitralucsis species, as if it had been moving through the solid fossil matrix…I am beginning to suspect it has fooled me into thinking it is a fossil at all, and is the mere husk or cast-off shell of something fantastic. On the left you may see my noodly appendage reaching out to excite the noble gasses left inside the form.

Jonas Pfeil hat für seine Diplomarbeit „Throwable Camera Array for Capturing Spherical Panoramas“ an der TU Berlin einen Kameraball konstruiert, der am höchsten Punkt des Wurfs ein 360°-Panoramabild seiner Umgebung schießt. Toll!
The camera is thrown into the air and captures an image at the highest point of flight – when it is hardly moving. The camera takes full spherical panoramas, requires no preparation and images are taken instantaneously. It can capture scenes with many moving objects without producing ghosting artifacts and creates unique images.
Our camera uses 36 fixed-focus 2 megapixel mobile phone camera modules. The camera modules are mounted in a robust, 3D-printed, ball-shaped enclosure that is padded with foam and handles just like a ball. Our camera contains an accelerometer which we use to measure launch acceleration. Integration lets us predict rise time to the highest point, where we trigger the exposure. After catching the ball camera, pictures are downloaded in seconds using USB and automatically shown in our spherical panoramic viewer. This lets users interactively explore a full representation of the captured environment.

Occupy Wallstreet to be „cleaned up“
Heute um 7 Uhr Ortszeit (bei uns um 13 Uhr, im Livestream oben sieht man allerdings, dass es bereits losgeht) soll der Liberty Park geräumt werden, in dem die Occupy Wallstreet-Demonstranten campen. Ich habe die Petition dagegen grade unterzeichnet. Aus dem SOS-Ruf auf Occupy Wallstreet:
Occupy Wall Street is gaining momentum, with occupation actions now happening in cities across the world.
But last night Mayor Bloomberg and the NYPD notified Occupy Wall Street participants about plans to “clean the park”—the site of the Wall Street protests—tomorrow starting at 7am. “Cleaning” was used as a pretext to shut down “Bloombergville” a few months back, and to shut down peaceful occupations elsewhere.
Bloomberg says that the park will be open for public usage following the cleaning, but with a notable caveat: Occupy Wall Street participants must follow the “rules”. NYPD Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has said that they will move in to clear us and we will not be allowed to take sleeping bags, tarps, personal items or gear back into the park.
This is it—this is their attempt to shut down #OWS for good.
Ich werde morgen bei der weltweiten Aktion Occupy Together in Berlin mitlaufen, wobei mir nicht klar ist, ob man sich am Potsdamer Platz oder am Alex trifft. Ich werde mal an beiden Plätzen vorbeischauen. [update] Curv schreibt in den Comments: „Potsdamer Platz, Deutsche Bank ist heute ab 19.00 uhr. Alexanderplatz am Neptunbrunnen ist morgen, Sa Okt 15, 13:00 Uhr.“

That’s the word going out – politely – on the Web to rally street protests on Saturday around the globe from New Zealand to Alaska via London, Frankfurt, Washington and, of course, New York, where the past month’s Occupy Wall Street movement has inspired a worldwide yell of anger at banks and financiers.“
[update] Reinigungsaktion der Polizei wurde nach den Protesten abgesagt, von The Awl: ‘It’s been quite a morning for Occupy Wall Street, which didn’t find out until nearly this morning’s deadline that the City was going to back down from evicting the protest for “cleaning.’“
