False Teeth for Christmas

Herzallerliebst!

A utility company is trying to reunite nine people with their false teeth in time for Christmas. The dentures were all recovered from Severn Trent’s sewage treatment works in Monkmoor, Shrewsbury. The teeth are thought to have been flushed down toilets or dropped down plug-holes.

Nuclear Spiderweb-Lifeform found?

Sweet!

The “white, stringlike” material was found among thousands of spent fuel assemblies submerged in deep pools within the site’s L Area, according to a report filed by the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board, a federal oversight panel.

“The growth, which resembles a spider web, has yet to be characterized, but may be biological in nature,” the report said.

Space Travel Supply Store

Schade.

Chip Kidd about Batman – Death by Design

After 25 years working nonstop as a graphic designer and writer, it happens: Chip Kidd gets the commission of a lifetime. That should be a good thing, shouldn’t it? Well, shouldn’t it?!“

D&D-Dice Chocolate

This is about as complicated and expensive (net cost: $100 + shipping) a mold as you’re likely to get, for anything reasonably sized. (Well, unless you want molded daleks complete with little plunger-arms or something else that is fundamentally not a convex shape.) That’s because it has a lot of little, tiny, fiddly pieces, and it’s a two-piece mold meant to create solid 3D shapes with no flat back. And the little fiddly pieces are of variable depth so you need way more silicone than you would if, say, you were just molding your favorite buttons. Chances are, your mold doesn’t need to be this insane. But that’s fine! You can still use this tutorial, just skip the pieces that are clearly irrelevant.

Why Norway ran out of Butter

A large share of the oil revenues, rather than subsidizing current government operations, is invested via the Norwegian Government Pension Fund, which is thought to own approximately 1 percent of the publicly traded stock in the world. In part, the purpose of the fund is, as its website says, “to safeguard and build financial wealth for future generations,” but this could be accomplished by directly giving the funds to Norwegians instead. The real purpose of holding the wealth in a fund that invests exclusively abroad is to limit the appreciation of the krone in international currency markets and maintain Norway’s industrial competitiveness. What it has in common with the butter tariffs, however, is that Norwegians are accepting lower living standards than they might otherwise enjoy for the sake of a long-term strategy of not becoming a Saudi-style oil monoculture.

So laugh it up this week if you see another story about Russian butter smugglers making their way to Oslo. Just remember that there are a lot of small oil-rich countries out there, and Norway is the most politically and socially functional of them all, thanks largely to the very ideas that saddled them with this amusing shortage.

Neil deGrasse Tyson AMA on Reddit (again)

Q: If a space traveling entity approached you with an opportunity to visit any celestial object from any distance and allow you bring one scientific instrument of your choosing, where would you go and what would you bring? The size of the instrument does not matter, but keep in mind the farther away your object of choice is, the more it may have changed (i.e. if you hoped to visit the recently discovered supernova SN 2011fe, you would arrive 21 million years after the event).

A: I’d bring my iPhone, as the most compact representation of modern culture there is. And I’d visit a civilization on a galaxy 65 million light years away. Assuming I can get there instantaneously, I would look back to Earth with their presumably super telescopes and witness the extinction of the dinosaurs – the light of which is just now reach them.

[update] My brain hurts:

Q: Hey Neil, can you somehow try to to make it a little easier to grasp the concept of infinity. best wishes from Germany!

A: No. The human mind, forged on the plains of Africa in search of food, sex, and shelter, is helpless in the face of infinity.
Therein is the barrier to learning calculus for most people — where infinities pop up often. The best you can do is simply grow accustomed to the concept. Which is not the same as understanding it.
And when you are ready, consider that some infinities are larger than others. For example, there are more fractions than there are counting numbers, yet they are both infinite. Just a thought to delay your sleep this evening.

Plop! Comic-Covers and the Story of Vernon Glute

Map of Song-Titles

Super!

A road map of song titles: from Highway to Hell to Penny Lane, Itchycoo Park to Heartbreak Hotel. And just like places in our own neighbourhood, some are really good and some are best avoided – remember Love House by Sam Fox? For the real music geek there’s an A-Z key of all the songs featured on the map with the bands that sang them.

Mozilla Reinvents Web Video With Popcorn 1.0 | Webmonkey | Wired.com: Popcorn is simply a JavaScript library that aims to simplify the process of adding external data culled from around the web to your video. To give an idea of what’s possible with Popcorn, Mozilla is showcasing the movie One Millionth Tower, a documentary film about an apartment building and how residents imagine the future. One Millionth Tower premiered online last weekend at Wired.com. If you haven’t seen it yet, head over to the Underwire blog.
One Millionth Tower uses some tricks beyond Popcorn (like WebGL for some 3D elements), but most of its coolest effects — like the way the environment in the film changes based on the real-time weather conditions and time of day at the Toronto high-rises where the documentary was filmed — are all courtesy of Popcorn.
If it happens to be snowing in Toronto when you watch the film, it will begin snowing in the virtual world of One Millionth Tower.
