Heute erschien der vierte Band von Jeff Lemires fantastischer Comicserie „Sweet Tooth“, der seltsamen Geschichte vom Mutanten Gus, der mit seinem Begleiter Jepperd in einer postapokalyptischen Welt ums Überleben kämpft. Nachdem sie sich in den vorigen Ausgaben mit den Überbleibseln des Militärs gekloppt hatten, das Experimente an den Mutantenkindern durchführte, treffen sie nun auf neue Weggefährten, Überlebende und ein neues Zuhause, in dem ein seltsamer Bewohner lebt.

Jeff Lemire bleibt nach wie vor (mit Abstand) mein Lieblingscomicautor, Sweet Tooth ist sein Experimentierfeld für neue Erzähltechniken mit variierenden Zeichenstilen und Formaten. Die Storyline um die Entdeckung eines vermeintlich verlassenen Damms wird unterbrochen von seltsamen Rückblenden, die Story ist seltsam-spröde, nur um dann in grandiose Bildgewalt auszubrechen. Sweet Tooth gehört neben Walking Dead zu meinen absoluten Lieblingscomics und auch, wenn das Ding für n00bs vielleicht etwas zu anstrengend sein dürfte, kann ich die Serie jedem einfach nur ans Herz legen.

Jeff Lemires DC-Serie „Animal Man“ ist übrigens die Reihe, die nach dem Neustart die wenigsten Leserzahleneinbußen hinnehmen musste. Der Mann hat einen Z-Promi-Superhelden in die erste Reihe geschrieben, weshalb er nun neben Animal Man und Frankenstein noch die Serie Dark Justice League übernehmen wird. Der Erfolg von Lemire im Comic-Mainstream freut mich sehr und das lässt einen wieder an das Gute im Menschen glauben. Deshalb: Lest Sweet Tooth!

Mein Lieblingsblog über mittelalterliche Chirurgie hat ein nettes Posting über in Menschenhaut gebundene Bücher. Die Illu zeigt die Häutung von Jonas Wright im 17. Jahrhundert, dessen Haut für den Einband eines spanischen Gesetzbuchs benutzt wurde. Yummy!

This is a book bound in the flesh of William Burke, the notorious murderer. Between 1827 and 1828, Burke and his accomplice, William Hare, drugged and killed 16 people for the sole purpose of selling their bodies to the anatomist, Dr Robert Knox. During their murder trial, Hare turned King’s Evidence in exchange for immunity. Burke was eventually found guilty of the murders and hanged before [ironically] being dissected in Edinburgh Medical College.

The process of binding books using human flesh is known as ‘anthropodermic bibliopegy’. One of the earlier examples dates from the 17th century and currently resides in Langdell Law Library at Harvard University. It is a Spanish law book published in 1605. The colour of the binding is a ‘subdued yellow, with sporadic brown and black splotches like an old banana’. On the last page, there is an inscription which reads:

„The bynding of this booke is all that remains of my dear friende Jonas Wright, who was flayed alive by the Wavuma [possibly an African tribe from modern-day Zimbabwe, see [above] illustration] on the Fourth Day of August, 1632. King Mbesa did give me the book, it being one of poore Jonas chiefe possessions, together with ample of his skin to bynd it. Requiescat in pace.“

Ich hab’ mich ja diese Woche ein bisschen geärgert, über einen YT-Clip über ACTA nämlich, den ich hier bewusst nicht gezeigt habe und der – deutlich formuliert – alarmistischer, desinformierender Dreck ist. Die bekannte Robocop-„Info“grafik ist übrigens sachlich ebenso falsch, hat aber immerhin einen Ed209. Ja, ACTA ist problematisch, aber weit weniger dramatisch, als es von ein paar Leuten dargestellt wird. Und ja, ich habe den Text des Handelsabkommens tatsächlich gelesen.

Die beste Analyse hat Reddit-User justicia311 vor ein paar Tagen gepostet: I’ve read the final version of ACTA, here’s what you need to know about it. Ebenfalls lesen sollte man das Posting auf Ars Technica, die mit ein paar der Falschinformationen aufräumen.

Claim: “ACTA gives [ISPs] the power—or more accurately forces them—to monitor all your packets, all the time.”

Reality: This is the most-repeated claim, and it’s simply inaccurate. Nothing in the treaty appears to require ISPs to monitor their customers’ traffic. While earlier versions of the treaty had proposed French-style “three strikes” measures, these proposals were dropped from the final version of the treaty. The closest ACTA comes to mandating ISP surveillance is section 27.3, which requires participating nations to “promote cooperative efforts within the business community to effectively address trademark and copyright or related rights infringement while preserving legitimate competition and, consistent with that Party’s law, preserving fundamental principles such as freedom of expression, fair process, and privacy.”

Forcing ISPs to actively monitoring their customers’ traffic might be one way to comply with this requirement. Implementing a “three strikes” regime might be another. But there are also innocuous ways a country could comply, like holding conferences on copyright enforcement, sending literature to businesses encouraging them to respect copyright, and setting up an anonymous tipline for suspected copyright or trademark infringement.

Ab 22 Uhr bin ich (schon wieder) im Meh-Cast mit Daniel „Kotzendes Einhorn“ Decker und Riotburnz live zu hören. Hier kann man live zuhören, hier gibt’s nen IRC-Chat, MP3 wird nachgereicht. Worum’s geht, weiß ich nicht und ich bin nicht mehr so richtig krank, aber noch ein bisschen. Thema sind unter anderem irrelevante Fürze von CDU-Politikern.

Das FAT-Lab arbeitet grade an der Scratch Markup Language, einer Auszeichnungssprache für Turntablism. Das ganze basiert auf der Graffiti Markup Language, die Evan Roth vor ein paar Jahren erfunden hatte, nachdem er Tags in Paris analysiert und in eine Studie übersetzt hatte. Das Projekt hatte ich damals in einer ganzen Reihe von Postings gefeatured (siehe Links unten). Dasselbe Prinzip wollen sie nun auf Deejaying anwenden. Das SML-Projekt ist grade erst gestartet und außer der Ankündigung gibt’s noch nicht allzuviel zu sehen, ich halte Euch aber auf jeden Fall auf dem Laufenden, weil äußerst spannend, das hier.

SML (Scratch Markup Language) is a new file format for recording and replaying turntablism. We’ve developed open-source tools for accurately capturing the record and crossfader movements of a scratch DJ, allowing us to analyze, transcribe, and recreate scratch performances. We want to do for turntablism what Graffiti Markup Language has done for tagging — especially teaching giant robot arms how to scratch.

At Art Hack Day we collaborated with other artists and programmers to develop the first prototypes of ScratchML. We used timecode vinyl to capture record movements ($10) and a hacked VCA fader + Arduino to record the crossfader ($30). Scratch data was saved to disk as .sml and broadcast as OSC, which allowed other Art Hack Day participants to build visualizations based on what the DJ was scratching during the exhibition. The apps ranged from spinning-vinyl animations and TTM transcriptions to insane exploding 3D pizzas and a side-scrolling videogame shooter controlled by scratches.

Our goal is to make capturing, replaying, and sharing a scratch performance accurate and easy. SML files can be freely uploaded and downloaded from the ScratchML.com database. We’re particularly looking forward to improving the experience of learning how to scratch — e.g. by building apps that show you just how accurate your autobahn scratches actually are.

Mike Masnick von Techdirt hat auf der Midem Konferenz in Cannes eine Studie zur Entwicklung des Entertainment-Markts in den letzten Jahren unter dem Einfluss des Internets veröffentlicht. Diese Zahlen sollte man jedem inkompetenten Politiker-Fatzke ins Gesicht schmieren, der für ACTA oder SOPA argumentiert:

* According to MPAA, box office revenues grew 25 percent from 2006 to 2010 from $25.5 billion to $31.8 billion.
* Data from PricewaterhouseCoopers and iDATE show that from 1998-2010 the value of the worldwide entertainment industry grew from $449 billion to $745 billion.
* From 1999 to 2009 music concert sales in the US tripled from $1.5 billion to $4.6 billion
* Consumers’ choices growing as more movies are produced jumping from 5,635 films produced globally in 2005 to 7,193 in 2009.
* BLS data also show entertainment sector employment also grew 20 percent during that last decade and 43 percent for those identified as independent artists.

Den Protesten schliessen sich immer mehr Menschen an, auch nicht internetaffine Bürger, Ärzte, Autofahrer (wegen den Spritpreisen). Das geht gerade nahtlos in eine ‘echte Revolution’ über“.

Hier ein weiteres Video der Proteste, ein anderes hatte ich vor ein paar Tagen gepostet. In der International Business Times gibt’s einen Überblick über die europaweiten Proteste (via /.), neben Polen ging gestern vor allem Frankreich verstärkt wegen ACTA auf die Straße. Weitere Proteste sind unter anderem in Tschechien, Schweden, Schweiz, Portugal und Irland geplant. Von deutschen Protesten fehlt jede Spur, wahrscheinlich wegen der miserablen Berichterstattung der Massenmedien und wohl auch, weil zu wenige Blogs Druck in der Sache machen (yes, I’m looking at You!)

Ich hab’ in den letzten Wochen das japanische Blog That’s Eurobeat geplündert. Das ist vollgestopft mit über 6000 Anzeigen, Covern und Magazin-Seiten von 1930 bis 1980 und ich hab’ das komplett durchgeklickt und werde in den nächsten Wochen das beste davon bei Flickr sichern – das wird ‘ne ganze Menge Zeugs, in nächster Zeit wird es hier jedenfalls etwas japanischer. Kleines Preview: Edgar Allen Poes World of Fear von 1969, Ultra Man von 1970, Alien Fashion 1975 und ungefähr 30 verschiedene illustrierte Retrofuturism-Artikelstrecken. Das wird alles sehr whoa.
