50 Years of Hulk Smash!

The Incredible Hulk #1 by Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, and George Roussos came out in 1962, and is cover-dated May — but the cover date is an indication as to when unsold copies of the comic were to be removed from the stands. As you can see from the scans […], stamped and penciled newsstand arrival dates have the comic hitting the stands on […] March 1, 1962.“

Hulk SMASH indeed!

Real Batman fights Crime in Brazil

Von The Mary Sue:

André Luiz Pinheiro, is a retired soldier and at 50-years-old, Brazil’s military police are asking for his help. Ovale.com has the story of how both residents and business owners in Taubaté have approved of the initiative to have Pinheiro, who’s fond of dressing like Batman for children’s parties and other events, participate in peace efforts in the area.

Translated from the article: “The goal is that it is part of the Movement for Peace, held by various civil society organizations organized and had its first edition last Sunday. The Military Police want the ‘Batman Taubaté’ begin their work already on the 17th, when a step is carried out more work to combat crime in the neighborhood Esplanade St. Therese, one of the most violent city. The action will be part of the efforts of UAPC (Advanced Community Policing Unit) installed in the neighborhood last year by the PM for the purpose of assisting the integration between the police and the community.”

The details aren’t finalized but the Brazilian Batman won’t be dealing with things like shoplifters and purse thiefs, he’ll be helping fight the serious issues of murder and drug trafficking. ”I am eager to know how we can work together,” said Pinheiro. “One child that I can help bringing the story of a character, it would be very cool.”

Holi: The Festival of Colors 2012

The Atlantics In Focus: The Colors of Holi 2012.

Around the world, Hindus are celebrating Holi, the Festival of Colors. Holi is a popular springtime celebrations observed on the last full moon of the lunar month. Participants traditionally throw bright, vibrant powders at friends and strangers alike, celebrating the arrival of Spring, commemorating Krishna’s pranks, and allowing everyone a momentary freedom — a chance to drop their inhibitions and simply play and dance. Gathered here are images of this year’s Holi festival from across India and several other countries.

Another Reason I Love Bollywood. Von dort aus dem Film „Sholay“:

 Youtube Direktholi

I asked Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap about his favorite cinematic Holi memory, and he was quick to answer with the following. Sholay is the all time blockbuster of Indian cinema. The film is epic and helped to make superstars out of its heroes, a young Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra (father of the above Sunny Deol), as well as creating the most iconic villain in all of Hindi cinema, Gabbar Singh, played by Amjad Khan. In Sholay, Holi is celebrated with the song Holi Ke Din, which features real life couple Hema Malini and Dhamendra chasing each other through the streets of this small hamlet which Dharmendra & Amitabh’s characters, Jai and Veeru have been recruited to secure from Gabbar Singh.

The song is among the most famous Holis captured on film, and features a more realistic picture of what Holi looks like for most. Friends and strangers alike flood into the streets to shower one another with colors. Unfortunately for the small town of Ramgarh, getting everyone out onto the street also marks an easy opportunity for Gabbar Singh’s men to loot the town, which happens immediately following the song. Jai and Veeru fight the dacoits off, but the damage is done, and their quest for justice begins.

Astronaut announces Angry Birds in Space from Space

 Youtube Direktbirds, via Geekosystem

Whole Apartment Pinhole Camera

 Vimeo Direktflat, via Publique

Romain A dunkelt für sein Projekt Stenop.es komplette Wohnungen ab und piekst in die Folie über den Fenstern kleine Löcher, was das ganze Apartment in Pinhole Cameras verwandelt: „This video is a part of a pinhole movie project based on the principle of the Camera Obscura. An apartment is completely darkened. A hole is made in a window, letting lights from outside coming in.

Little Rebels: Star Wars, Norman Rockwell-Style

Steal like an Artist

 Vimeo Direktsteal, via Brain Pickings

Das Buch hat außerdem einen schönen Trailer mit seinem Hund Milo: „I hate book trailers, so I made a cute dog video disguised as a book trailer“.

When I was asked to talk to students at a community college in upstate New York, I sat down and wrote a talk based on a list of 10 things I wished I’d heard when I was starting out:

1. Steal like an artist.
2. Don’t wait until you know who you are to get started.
3. Write the book you want to read.
4. Use your hands.
5. Side projects and hobbies are important.
6. The secret: do good work and share it with people.
7. Geography is no longer our master.
8. Be nice. (The world is a small town.)
9. Be boring. (It’s the only way to get work done.)
10. Creativity is subtraction.

The text and slides from the talk “rocked the creative world” (GalleyCat) and went viral—since it’s been online, the original blog post has reached millions of readers.I’ve expanded the post into a book-length work stuffed full of brand-new writing and illustrations, published by Workman Publishing in February 2012.

AI-created Videogames

Game Developers: Kiss your Job goodbye! Interessantes Bit vom Artikel auf New Scientist: „In theory there is nothing to stop an artist sitting down with Angelina, creating a game every 12 hours and feeding that into the Apple App Store“. Geil, Game-Spam per Artificial Intelligence!

Angelina creates games using a technique known as cooperative co-evolution. The system separately designs different aspects, or species, of the game. In Space Station Invaders – in which players control a scientist who must fend off rogue robots and invading aliens to escape a space station – the species include the layout of each different level, enemy behaviour and the power-ups that give a player extra abilities. Angelina creates a level by randomly selecting from a list, then scattering enemies and power-ups throughout the level. Enemy movements and combat behaviours are also randomly selected from a list, while the effects of the power-ups are also random.

It then combines the species and simulates a human playing the game to see which designs lead to the most fun or interesting results. For example, levels that are initially hard to complete but get easier through clever use of power-ups are considered fun, while those that are impossible to complete are discarded. Angelina then cross-breeds and mutates the most successful members of each species to evolve a new generation, typically 400 times.

AI designs its own video game, spielen kann man eins von Angelina erstellten Games hier: Space Station Invaders: „a game that was designed especially for New Scientist by AI called Angelina“

Dragon Head Pizza-Ofen

Also: Mmmmm, Pizza!

how often do you get to watch a restaurant cook pizzas in an oven shaped like a giant dragon’s head? A gaping serpentine maw, which has been sculpted over a gas-fired Mugniani oven, is the first thing you see when you walk into the restaurant. Not surprisingly, given the way Source describes itself, the pizzas they pull from the belly of this beast defy easy categorization.

For those keeping score at home, Source’s dragon burns at about 610 degrees on the oven floor, cooking pies in around four minutes.

OAK-U-TRON 201X: A Mobile Arcade Game for the 99%

Wired über die neueste Protestform der Occupy-Bewegung: Eine 2-Player-Arcade-Machine auf Rollen: Occupy Rolls Out Its Most Subversive Tech: A Mobile Arcade Game for the 99%.

The OAK-U-TRON 201X console and the videogame that lives therein, Keep Me Occupied, are the most recent inventions of a movement that has spawned human-microphone apps and its own brand of music. They made their inaugural voyage Jan. 28 as Occupy protesters marched in Oakland, dragging the awkward cabinet along with them like ants shuttling weighty foodstuff. Protesters teamed up for games while miraculously avoiding the tear gas and flashbang grenades that eventually made their way into the crowds that day.

The OAK-U-TRON 201X (a nod to the Mega Man games that took place in the ambiguous year of 200X or 20XX) is the brainchild of game designers Alex Kerfoot, Anna Anthropy and Mars Jokela, a project designed both as entertainment and as a microcosm of the Occupy movement — collaborative, ambitious and optimistic. And it’s set to officially debut before the gaming community at San Francisco’s Game Developers Conference on Friday. […]

“The game [marries] the idea of the social movement where everyone who’s playing contributes to the overall success of everyone,” says Anthropy. “Someone who’s maybe not super good at videogames might only get to an early switch, but they’ll still stay behind and hold that switch and help all future players to still be contributing something that’s significant.”

Clever Businesscard-Poster-Flipbooks

 Vimeo Direktcards

Schöne Idee für seine Visitenkarten von Designer Silvio Teixeira, die sind nämlich ein Poster zum Selberauseinanderfummeln und Daumenkino in einem: „100 Ids is a project that defines my identity as a designer and it is also a self promotion campaign. The poster (50×70 cm) is cut to become 100 business cards and 1 video.“ Schick! (via Boooooooom)
