Apart from highlighting once again the amazing possibilities of digital technologies applied to art, this job from Anna Giordano is indeed a good cue to reconsider both the subjectivity of cultural standards (in facts, ours are so different from the past ones) and the inclination of modern society and advertising companies to edit most images of feminine body in order to reach a fake perfection, corresponding to an unreachable reality.
Madmen Bittorrent Edition

Video comprising one episode of Madmen incompletely downloaded from the internet via bittorrent. The video has been linearly edited, no digital effects were used and all jump cuts and repeats are in the corrupted file.
The video captures an episode of the popular TV show in the act of being shared by thousands of users on bittorent. The video simultaneously acts as a visualisation of bittorrent traffic and the practice of filesharing and is an aesthetically beautiful by product of the bittorrent process as the pieces of the original file are rearranged and reconfigured into a new transitory in-between state.
It also avoids infringing the copyright of Madmen as it is incomplete.
BitTorrent breaks up a file into a series of pieces (for a file like this, probably about 256KB each) and downloads them in random order, based on availability. This means that if you try to view the file while it’s downloading, the player has to deal with random holes of various sizes where data is missing because those pieces haven’t arrived yet.
This file was likely encoded in a format called MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile or MPEG4 ASP for short. That is the name of the official specification that gives the rules for how encoding works, but doesn’t actually provide any software to implement it.
Caines Arcade
Ich hatte letzte Woche so viel Arbeit und Stress, dass ich gestern alle ungelesenen Feedreader-Items (dürften so rund 5000 ungelesene gewesen sein) einfach weggeklickt habe und es tut mir um keine der verpassten Stories leid – außer dieser hier, die Minidoku um Caines Arcade und den Reddit-Flashmob in der Papp-Spielhalle eines 9jährigen. Ihr kennt das zwar schon alle, ich will das aber trotzdem hier haben.

Nine-year-old Caine Monroy became an online sensation this week for building an elaborate cardboard arcade inside his dad’s used auto parts store. At first, business was slow — that is, until his first customer, filmmaker Nirvan Mullick, was inspired to organize a flashmob through Facebook and Reddit, sending a slew of worthy gamers upon Caine’s Arcade and capturing the magic day in a short film.
Now that the video has gone viral, the Caine’s Arcade Facebook page boasts over 45,000 Likes, with fans and supporters having raised over $100,000 for his scholarship fund in just three days.

Artificial Beauty Masks from Uncanny Valley
Meike Harde hat minimalistische Masken gebastelt, die lediglich die Augen und Mundpartie mit den gephotoshopten Fake-Lächeln irgendwelcher Lifestylemagazin-Bratzen übertüncht. Ergebnis sind erschreckende Gesichter aus dem uncanny Valley, die das wahre Gesicht von sowas aufdecken.
Masks which picture the eye- and mouth area correspond to the current ideal of beauty. When put on, however, they cause a contortion of the face. This is meant to show that artificially produced beauty is not always beautiful; instead it can evoke the very opposite. Furthermore the pressure to be beautiful is to be questioned and denounced.

Bike as digital Turntable Controler
Nur ein Viral für einen japanischen Fahrrad-Sharing-Service, aber trotzdem sehr schick: “The Turntable Rider is an epic bicycle accessory which converts a bicycle into a musical instrument. The bike wheels, become jog wheels. The handbrakes, become sound pads. Mix and scratch at will.” Auf der Website zum Bike gibts noch ein Making-Of-Video.
Brain Bank Photography from Dementia Research
Die Welcome Collection zeigt derzeit die Ausstellung “Brains: The Mind as Matter“: “Our major new free exhibition seeks to explore what humans have done to brains in the name of medical intervention, scientific enquiry, cultural meaning and technological change. Featuring over 150 artefacts including real brains, artworks, manuscripts, artefacts, videos and photography, ‘Brains’ follows the long quest to manipulate and decipher the most unique and mysterious of human organs, whose secrets continue to confound and inspire.”
Alleine schon interessant genug, auf der Seite gibt’s ein 360°-Hirn und Fotos und all das habe ich mir gar nicht angeschaut, weil ich will nur auf einen Teil der Ausstellung raus: Ania Dabrowska fotografiert in ihrem After I’m Gone-Projekt sowohl Demenz-Patienten, die ihr Gehirn nach ihrem Tode der Demenzforschung spenden, als auch die Brain Bank an der Uni Cambridge, wie diese Gehirne dann in Scheiben geschnitten und untersucht werden. Ein fotografisches Hirnprojekt auf beiden Seiten von Leben und Tod. Super!

Google BBS
Norbert Landsteiner hat ein Video von Squirrelmonkey nachprogrammiert, das Google in den 80ern als BBS zeigte (die Twitter und Facebook-Videos von denen gingen neulich ebenfalls rum, findet man in den related Videos).
Atari sketches Wikipedia, 1982
Bob Stein hat auf dem Blog vom “Institute for the Future of the Book” (!) eine Reihe alter Illus über die Zukunft einer intelligenten Enzyklopädie gepostet, die er damals in seinem Job bei Atari bei Disney-Zeichner Glenn Keane in Auftrag gegeben hatte. Die Illus sind okay, als retrofuturistisches Artefakt aber natürlich hochinteressant.

Alan Kay had just become the Chief Scientist at Atari and he asked me to work with him to continue the work I started at Encyclopedia Britannica on the idea of an Intelligent Encyclopedia. We came up with these scenarios of how the (future) encyclopedia might be used and commissioned Glenn Keane, a well-known Disney animator to render them. The captions also date from 1982.
