Horse Fly named after Beyoncés golden Butt
Wissenschaftler haben eine bislang namenlose Fliege nach Beyoncé benannt. Genauer: Nach ihrem Hintern und dem Destinys Child-Song „Bootylicious“, weil die Fliege als ultimatives Diva-Feature einen goldenen Arsch hat. Wenn ich solches Gejaule wie das von Beyoncé oder ähnlichen „Künstlerinnen“ hören muss, denke ich auch immer an Fliegen mit Goldärschen. Passt.
A previously unnamed species of horse fly with a glamorous golden rear end has been named Beyonce because it is the “all-time diva of flies,” researchers say.
The rare Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae species of horse fly was collected in 1981 (the year that Beyonce was born) together with two other previously unknown specimens from northeast Queensland’s Atherton Tablelands.
The singer Beyonce, on the other hand, was a member of the group Destiny’s Child, which recorded the 2001 hit single “Bootylicious.” The fly got its booty-ful name from its extreme diva feature: a big gold butt.
“It was the unique dense golden hairs on the fly’s abdomen that led me to name this fly in honor of the performer Beyonce as well as giving me the chance to demonstrate the fun side of taxonomy — the naming of species,” Lessard said in a statement.

The “nano-ear,” a microscopic particle of gold trapped by a laser beam, can detect sound a million times fainter than the threshold for human hearing. Researchers suggest the work could open up a whole new field of “acoustic microscopy,” in which organisms are studied using the sound they emit.

Victorian Astronomy Drawings
Die New York Public Library hat ein paar Space-Zeichnungen aus dem 19. Jahrhundert digitalisiert und online gestellt. Die Bilder stammen von Étienne Léopold Trouvelot, der aus Frankreich nach Amerika geflohen war, nachdem sich Napoleon III. zum Kaiser der Franzosen ausrufen lies. In den USA landete er schließlich am Harvard College Observatory, für das er hunderte Zeichnungen anfertigte.
For the next few years Trouvelot made hundred of sketches of what he saw through the observatory’s 15-inch refractor telescope. In 1875 he published a discovery of his own: veiled spots, grey patches that look like shadows on the surface of the sun. He then moved on to other observatories, including the Washington Observatory and the University of Virginia’s.
In 1881, he selected 15 out of his thousands of astronomy drawings to be published in a book using then-cutting edge chromolithography technology, a color printing process that made color illustrations cheap and plentiful. It’s those chromolithographs that the New York Public Library has digitized.

Hier der Trailer zu „Road to the Stars“, einer Doku über Richard „Lord British“ Garriotts Ausflug ins All. Der Mann hat Ultima programmiert und wäre fast der erste Tourist im All geworden, wenn ihm die scheiß Dotcom-Bubble dazwischen gekommen wäre. Der Film hatte bereits 2010 auf dem SXSW-Festival Premiere, läuft aber erst jetzt in den USA an und wird bei uns wahrscheinlich bis auf ein paar Festivalscreenings nie zu sehen sein. Aber es gibt ja andere Möglichkeiten.

Geldautomaten der Bank of America mit Stickern überklebt haben, die ein neues Menü anboten, auf denen man gegen Klimawandel lobbyieren, Kohle verfeuern, Familien aus ihren Häusern rausschmeissen und sich selbst natürlich fette Bonusse ausschütten konnte. Hätte man hierzulande schon längst mit der Deutschen Bank machen sollen.

Ich hab’ mir grade zum Wachwerden Mike Mignolas Cartoon-Umsetzung seines Comics „The Amazing Screw-On-Head“ angesehen, in dem ein Roboterkopf als Agent Abraham Lincolns Jagd auf einen Emperor Zombie macht. Der Pilot wurde 2006 auf dem SciFi-Channel ausgestrahlt, die Serie wurde aber nie produziert. Voiceactors sind unter anderem Patton Oswalt und Paul Giamatti. Screw-On Head is an agent for President Abraham Lincoln. He is summoned by Lincoln to track down Emperor Zombie, an undead occultist and originally a groundskeeper at Hyde Park.
