What inspired you to begin the UNYPL?
The first time I photographed a subway reader, I did it just out of photographic instincts. After that I felt compelled to do it again, and the photographs I collected inspired me to build a visual library. Concentrating on the Reading-Riders led me to discover layers of meaning in their presence and activity. In time I resolved to create an extensive series, in revelation, preservation, and celebration of them.What does a book say about its reader?
To read is to be willing to engage ourselves towards discovery. Reading any book demonstrates this willingness. When I see the Reading-Riders, I see people who are contemplating description of new possibilities. In this way, every book says that its reader is simply great.
Free Music Contest 2012
Die Musikpiraten machen auch dieses Jahr wieder ihren Free Music Contest für CC-lizenzierte Musik und yours truly sitzt auch 2012 wieder in der Jury.
Unter dem Motto »Freedom & Free Beer« startet am 1. Juli 2012 der vierte Free! Music! Contest. Der Wettbewerb des Musikpiraten e.V. hat bereits internationale Bekanntheit in der Creative Commons-Musikszene erlangt, es beteiligen sich Bands von Venezuela bis hin zu den Philippinen. Während letztes Jahr der Fokus auf dem Ermöglichen von abgeleiteten Werken lag, steht dieses Jahr der Begriff »frei« im Mittelpunkt. Ab wann genau ist Musik »frei«? Reicht es, wenn für sie nichts bezahlt werden muss, sie also »frei wie Freibier« ist? Oder muss es erlaubt sein, sie auch zu verändern und zu verkaufen, ohne die Urheber zu entlohnen, wie es die Defintion von »frei wie in Freiheit« der Free Software Foundation benutzt?
»Diese Entscheidung können und wollen wir den Künstler nicht abnehmen. Aber wir wollen sie dazu anregen, darüber nachzudenken.« erklärt Christian Hufgard, 1. Vorsitzender der Musikpiraten, die Überlegung hinter dem Konzept. »Die Szene freier Musik ist groß. Manche Künstler wollen mit den Werken Werbung für sich machen, andere wollen dass ihre Werke für jederman frei nutzbar sind. Diese Vielfalt wollen wir auch im Wettbewerb widerspiegeln.« […]
Jede Band bzw. jeder Solo-Künstler kann genau ein Lied einreichen, das unter einer Creative Commons-Lizenz veröffentlicht wurde. Ist ein Künstler in mehreren Projekten tätig, kann er für jedes Projekt einen Titel einreichen. Für einen Titel können Bonuspunkte »erworben« werden, indem mindestens eine Audiospur eines Songs bei ccmixter.org hochgeladen wird. Sowohl für das Hochladen als auch für jeden Remix bis zur Ende der Bewertungszeit gibt es einen Bonuspunkt. Zwei Bonuspunkte gibt es, wenn ein Video zum Song eingereicht wird. Die Anmeldung ist bis zum 31. Juli 2012 möglich.
Gregory Euclides Wiped Away-Paintings
Gregory Euclide macht Kunst und lehrt an einer High School und während der Mittagspause hat er in 25 Minuten ein bisschen Kunst an Whiteboards gemalt, die er anschließend wieder wegwischte. Aus einem Interview mit mnoriginal:
MNO: These projects were presumably all washed away – what appealed to you about creating a completely impermanent work?
GE: I could make them in 25 minutes, so they were not too incredibly precious to me. Yes, they were all washed away. I was kind of showing students what could be done with 25 minutes of time. They would come in from the previous day and be like… “what happened to that drawing that was up there yesterday?” I would explain that I washed it off and they would just be floored that someone would make something and then destroy it.

Tolle experimentale Typo von Marshmallow Laser Feast, die Text auf einem Laptopscreen gefilmt und die Helligkeit des Videofeeds als Werte für die Extrusion der Fonts in einem dreidimensionalen Raum interpretiert haben. Irgendwie so.
All the text is generated from a realtime system. It went something like this: HD webcam filming text on the laptop screen. Waggle the camera, change focus, waggle a ruler in front of the lens, focus, calm movement, finish with a waggle. This signal fed into another laptop running Openframeworks. This app took the luminance of the video feed and extruded it in z depth. The parameters in the app where mapped to a midi controller so we could waggle. This signal was projected onto a back projection screen and filmed with a 5DmkII. Once the system was set-up content creation was really quick but more importantly it was organic and rather jolly!

Tracking all iPhone-Activity in Public for one year
Johannes trackt seit gestern für ein ganzes Jahr lang alle Aktivitäten auf seinem iPhone und schickt den Screenshot, den alle Handys anfertigen (um den Zoom-Effekt beim verlassen der App anzuzeigen), automatisiert an eine Website. Er schreibt mir:
„Die neue Performance heißt “iPhone live” und fängt heute zum Geburtstag des iPhones an. Verkaufsstart war heute vor 5 Jahren. Dieses Mal halte ich mich an folgendes Manifest: ‘I, Johannes P Osterhoff, shall do another one-year performance piece. The piece is called “iPhone live” and documents the activities performed on my mobile phone during this year. Activities can be seen streamed on this site and during public projections. The performance shall start on June 29, 2012 and shall end on June 29, 2013. I shall not use other mobile phones during this year.’“
Each time its home button is pressed an iPhone automatically takes a screenshot of the current app to display a zooming effect.
For this performance, I installed two programs on my jailbroken iPhone:
The first one duplicates each screenshot so that the files cannot be overwritten the next time the app is minimized. The second one uploads these screens automatically to this site and publishes them. These programs are executed regularly in the background by means of launch demons.

Portal Lego-Concept
Auf Cuusoo, Legos offizieller Community-Website für Fan-Modelle, kann man derzeit über ein Portal-Lego-Set abstimmen. I want this so hard! Das erste offizielle Cuusoo-Modell, das tatsächlich produziert wurde, ist das Minecraft-Lego-Set, Portal ist also nicht wirklich unrealistisch und den spielerischen Bildungs-Gedanken haben Lego und Portal bereits gemeinsam.

The two seem to mix well, Lego and Portal, the basic bricks and tiles can easily and perfectly (with a little brickmath) replicate the standard setting of Portal, the iconic Testing Chambers. But for the more complex assets of the game, notably GLaDOS, there is satisfying level of difficulty, but still an elegant and representative translation. Lego and Portal will mesh nicely, each enhancing the other, the whole greater than the sum of it’s parts.

Josef Kristofoletti hat ein Timelapse-Video des Making Ofs seines Murals auf dem ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS)-Teilchendetektor am LHC gemalt hatte. Ich frag’ mich zwar, warum er ausgerechnet jetzt damit um die Ecke kommt, möglicherweise weil angeblich nächste Woche die Entdeckung des Higgs-Teilchens bekanntgegeben werden soll, aber sei’s drum:
This video documents the making of an art project commissioned by the ATLAS Experiment at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. The three story tall mural was painted by international artist Josef Kristofoletti on the side of the ATLAS control room directly above the detector, near the Swiss-French border outside of Geneva. This project was inspired by the same questions that the physicists at CERN are trying to answer; where did we come from, what does it mean to be human, and what is our place in the universe. The artist worked closely on location with physicists at CERN over the course of a year to create the mural. It depicts the artist’s interpretation of what the Higgs boson might look like.
Shepard Faireys Rolling Stones-Logo
Shepard „Obey Giant“ Fairey hat das ikonographische „Tongue & Lips“-Logo der Stones anlässlich ihres 50sten Jubiläums remixt. Das Logo wird ständig mit dem angeblichen Original von John Pasche verglichen, ursprünglich stammt das Logo allerdings von Ernie Cefalu, dessen Version man sich hier ansehen kann. Daraus leitete Pasche seine Iteration ab (unten links, dafür bekam er damals als Student 50 Dollar, den Originalentwurf verkaufte er 2008 für $92.500), die er für das finale, auf „Sticky Fingers“ benutzte Artwork (unten rechts) überarbeitete.
Der Originalentwurf von Pasche ist super, seine eigene Überarbeitung damals war ein ziemlicher Rückschritt: Der linke Glanzstreifen auf der Zunge ist unnötig, der schatten auf der Zunge ist unsauber, die Rechte Kontur ist unsauber und sieht komisch aus, die Strichstärken passen nicht zusammen, der Schatten unter den Zähnen ist falsch. Faireys Entwurf schlägt nicht Pasches Original-Zunge, ist aber eine kleine Verbesserung im Gegensatz zur auf „Sticky Fingers“ verwendeten Version, dafür ist die Typo allerdings etwas wackelig, wobei ich die Idee der 5 und 0 als S und O gut finde, hat was von 1337-Speak: 5T0NES. Kann man machen.
The Rolling Stones unveiled their 50th Anniversary logo this week, and though its designer, Shepard Fairey, has collaborated with Mick Jagger before (on the album art for last year’s SuperHeavy LP), he admits that he was still “overwhelmed” by Jagger’s request that he retool the band’s famed lips-and-tongue logo.
We asked Fairey to share his thoughts on the collaboration with Rolling Stone. Here is his full response:
I’ve been a big fan of the Rolling Stones since my dad introduced me to “Satisfaction.” Tattoo You is one of the earliest albums I bought with my own money and I studied the album package obsessively … you may notice how its color scheme and iconic art could have inspired me? The Rolling Stones have had a lot of great art over the decades, but nothing can top their tongue logo, originally created by John Pasche in 1971. In my opinion, the Stones’ tongue logo is the most iconic, potent and enduring logo in rock & roll history. I think the logo not only captures Mick Jagger’s signature lips and tongue, but also the essence of rebellion and sexuality that is the allure of all rock & roll at its finest.
