Straight White Male Gamer-Checklist

- Complete strangers generally do not send me unsolicited images of their genitalia or demand to see me naked on the basis of being a male gamer.
- In multiplayer games I can be pretty sure that conversations between other players will not focus on speculation about my “attractiveness” or “sexual availability” in real-life.
- If I choose to point out sexism in gaming, my observations will not be seen as self-serving, and will therefore be perceived as more credible and worthy of respect than those of my female counterparts, even if they are saying the exact same thing.

Unknown Warhols found on Amiga Floppy Disks from 1985

Damit wäre Retrocomputing und Digitale Archäologie nun wohl offiziell im Kunstbetrieb angekommen: Previously Unknown Warhol Works Discovered on Floppy Disks from 1985. (via Bruce Sterling)

A multi-institutional team of new-media artists, computer experts, and museum professionals have discovered a dozen previously unknown experiments by Andy Warhol (BFA, 1949) on aging floppy disks from 1985.

The purely digital images, “trapped” for nearly 30 years on Amiga® floppy disks stored in the archives collection of The Andy Warhol Museum (AWM), were discovered and extracted by members of the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Computer Club, with assistance from the AWM’s staff, CMU’s Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry (FRSCI), the Hillman Photography Initiative at the Carnegie Museum of Art (CMOA), and New York based artist Cory Arcangel.

Warhol’s Amiga experiments were the products of a commission by Commodore International to demonstrate the graphic arts capabilities of the Amiga 1000 personal computer. Created by Warhol on prototype Amiga hardware in his unmistakable visual style, the recovered images reveal an early exploration of the visual potential of software imaging tools, and show new ways in which the preeminent American artist of the 20th century was years ahead of his time.

By the Numbers

40 Disks archived
4 (of which 2 affected used spce) Disks with bad seclors (severe corruption)
9 (of which 5 affected data files) Disks with any form of observable filesystem damage
10 Disks with Warhol-added files
16 Disks of which copies do not seem to exist online
1 (plus 1 partially recovered) Signed works (incl. any comprised of just a signature)
2 Unsigned works clearly in Warhol’s style

1kg Silver Putin-Coins

„The Mint Refers To The New Coin As ’1 KG Of Nobility’“. Party like its 1888!

Silver coins with the face of Russian President Vladimir Putin are being minted in Russia. The coins weigh one kilogram (1kg – 2.2lb) and are being launched by the Art Grani foundry to mark Crimea’s reincorporation into Russia.

The private mint that produces the coins said it is planning to present some of them to the Russian leadership. The coins are commemorative in nature and are a limited edition of 500 silver coins initially. The factory states that some of the coins may be sold, but they won’t be used as currency.

Frozen Shit Transplants:

(Vorher auf NC: First Shit-Transplant Bank, Fake-Poop-Scientists mixing Shit in Roboguts)

Julien Assange boxed a Priest on Easter:

„The WikiLeaks founder met with boxing champion Solomon Egberime, then had a sparring match with Father David Smith (a.k.a. ‘Fighting’ Father Dave), his team tells The Huffington Post. Smith describes himself on Twitter as a professional boxer, 6th degree black belt and social activist (as well as an Anglican parish priest). ‘Julian Assange is a warrior for justice and human rights. On Easter Sunday, I went to visit him in the Ecuadoran Embassy in London for some sparring and reflection. Julian can pack a punch! At times, I thought he was mistaking me for the NSA!‘ Smith said.“

John Carpenters Elizabeth Dane found at San Franciscos Golden Gate Bridge

Der alte Seemann erzählt im Intro von John Carpenters The Fog folgende kurze Geschichte:

One hundred years ago on the 21st of April, out in the waters around Spivey Point, a small clipper ship drew toward land. Suddenly, out of the night, the fog rolled in. For a moment, they could see nothing, not a foot in front of them. Then, they saw a light. By God, it was a fire burning on the shore, strong enough to penetrate the swirling mist. They steered a course toward the light. But it was a campfire, like this one. The ship crashed against the rocks, the hull sheared in two, mars snapped like a twig. The wreckage sank, with all the men aboard. At the bottom of the sea, lay the Elizabeth Dane, with her crew, their lungs filled with salt water, their eyes open, staring to the darkness.

Spivey Point bei Antonio Bay im Film ist im echten Leben Point Reyes Station in Marin County, nördlich von San Francisco. Der Film wurde 1980 gedreht, „100 Hundred Years ago“ bezieht sich also auf das Jahr 1880.

Und heute meldet Reuters das hier: Ship that sank in 1888 found near San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.

The wreckage of a passenger steamship that sank in the 19th century after a collision in the San Francisco Bay has been found near the Golden Gate Bridge, officials said on Wednesday. The steamship City of Chester was discovered by researchers using sonar in waters about 216 feet deep. It was encased in mud.

“The ship is very much intact,” said James Delgado, director of Maritime Heritage at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), who has investigated other shipwrecks.

When the fog returns to Antonio Bay, the men at the bottom of the sea, out in the water by Spivey Point will rise up and search for the campfire that led them to their dark, icy death.

Science finds The Force

Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars, Episode I: „Midi-chlorians are microscopic life-forms that reside within the cells of all living things and communicate with the Force.” […] We are symbionts with the midi-chlorians.[…] Life-forms living together for mutual advantage. Without the midi-chlorians, life could not exist, and we would have no knowledge of the Force. Our midi-chlorians continually speak to us, Annie, telling us the will of the Force.“

Max Tegmark vom Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge: „Tegmark’s approach is to think of consciousness as a state of matter, like a solid, a liquid or a gas. ‘I conjecture that consciousness can be understood as yet another state of matter. Just as there are many types of liquids, there are many types of consciousness,’ he says.“ The Force is strong with this one.

TRO LLC: Hacker Hedge Fund

[Auernheimer] says he plans to start a hedge fund, conspicuously named “TRO LLC.”

“The strategy is short equities—like all short sellers, I am looking to publicize flaws in publicly traded companies,” he said. “However, instead of financial problems, I will be looking for companies with poorly written software that breach the implicit promise of safety that they give when they take data from their customers. When someone affiliated with our fund identifies negligent privacy breaches at a public web service, we will take a short position in that company’s shares and then tell the media about it.”

That, of course, will have financial consequences for the company in question, and could also bring a cash windfall to anyone—like Auernheimer—holding the short position.

Jedenfalls – Here we go: Gib mir den Rest, Baby…

#myNYPD goes global

null

(via AnimalNY)

Plastic Storm: 36 Ventilators, 4.7m3 Packing Chips

 Vimeo Direktchips

Converting nine of the museum’s towering window spaces into ‘ventilation chambers’ (four ventilators are installed in each window) and filling them with polystyrene, Zimoun unleashes a perfect ‘plastic storm.’ Congregating into a mass that’s neither solid, gaseous nor liquid, the flakes perform a violent, otherworldy dance. With the phenonema trapped behind glass, we get to watch in wonder from the safety of the outside.

Drones play Music

 Youtube Direktdrones, via Laughing Squid

Dronenmucke von KMel Robotics, klingt besser, als ich mir das vorgestellt hätte: „KMel Robotics presents a team of flying robots that have taken up new instruments to play some fresh songs. The hexrotors create music in ways never seen before, like playing a custom single string guitar hooked up to an electric guitar amp. Drums are hit using a deconstructed piano action. And there are bells. Lots of bells.“
