Stanislaw Lems Summa Technologiae is available in English for the first time since (nearly) 50 Years! I read this monster more than twenty years ago, then again and then again and it totally blew my mind, every single time – actually it is one of the reasons, why this blog is what it is.
Imagine scientific Futurism combined with Electronics, Engineering and that Lemian Weirdness, that only he could achieve. Kevin Kelly on Steroids right from the dawn of the space age. Read this, it’s totally and highly recommended. Yes, it is indeed that good.
With Summa Technologiae, his masterwork of non-fiction which has been translated into English for the first time, Lem has taken Western civilisation for a spin – with spectacular consequences. The book will be a fabulous shock to those who know only his science fiction, such as Solaris or The Cyberiad. Others will have caught tantalising glimpses of Summa, published in 1964, in a few essays. Diehards may even have read it in translation, notably German or Russian. […]
Summa is not for the faint-hearted. Starting with a title that pastiches Thomas Aquinas’s 13th-century Summa Theologiae, Lem sets out to replace god with reason. 4. Weltkongress der Hedonistischen Internationale
Ich bin am kommenden übernächstes Wochenende auf dem 4. Weltkongress der Hedonistischen Internationale und werde dort zusammen mit Daniel seinen ursprünglich auf der Republica gehaltenen Vortrag über Pop & Politics aufbohren, da das Thema meines Erachtens noch ‘ne Menge mehr hergibt und die Hedonisten mit ihren Aktionen von Media-Hacks bis Wahlparty-Crashing eben genau das tun. Was wir da genau erzählen werden, weiß ich noch nicht, aber da wird schon irgendwas schniekes bei rumkommen.

Yahoo kauft also Tumblr für 1,1 Millarden in Cash. Dass die Summe in Cash fliesst, deutet darauf hin, dass David Karp (Gründer von Tumblr) Yahoo bei den Verhandlungen durchaus unter Druck setzen konnte, was für sich alleine schon interessant genug ist.
Tumblr muss dem Deal noch zustimmen, offizielle Statements werden heute im laufe des Tages erwartet, es kamen allerdings von keiner Seite Dementierungen der Grüchte, im Gegenteil: Yahoo eröffnete gestern sein eigenes, offizielles Tumblelog. Auch gerüchtet es, dass Marissa Mayer in den letzten Wochen ziemlich oft mit Karp rumgehangen haben soll (Link hab ich verschlampt, sorry) – ich verwette meinen Arsch, dass der Deal bereits vollständig eingetütet wurde und die bereits vollzogene Hochzeit heute bekanntgegeben wird.
Die User reagieren, wie man’s von ihnen erwartet und natürlich werden naheliegende Vergleiche mit Geocities gezogen, die nicht nur ein bisschen hinken: Yahoo 2013 unter Marissa Mayer ist ein anderes Yahoo, als das, dass 1999 einen rumpeligen Webhosting-Service gekauft hatte. Das Geheule der Dramaqueens User dürfte allerdings zu 99% unbegründet sein, die werden Tumblr zunächst so weiterlaufen wie gehabt, haben allerdings bereits Änderungen unter der Haube angekündigt – was der Plattform bei aller Liebe nur gut tun kann.
Evil Dead (Review)
Ich habe mir gestern Evil Dead angesehen, das Remake zu einem meiner absoluten Lieblingsfilme, der damals den Splatterfilm revolutionierte und die Hollywood-Karriere von Sam Raimi und Bruce Campbell sicherte. Die Story ist so kurz wie belanglos: Fünf Freunde fahren in den Wald, erwecken zufällig Dämonen, die von einen nach dem anderen Besitz ergreifen.
Das Original riss mit seinen absurdesten Gewaltszenen damals Grenzen ein, wenn sich etwa Cheryl als Deadite selbst die Hand abbeisst, Scott ihr das Dämonenmesser sammt abgekauter Hand in den Rücken rammt und sie dann in einer ganz absurden Soundmischung aus Rülpsen und einer auslaufenden Schallplatte langsam zergeht und Milch-Erdbeersirup verspritzt. Nur um *dann* nochmal aufzustehen, woraufhin sie von Scott zerhackt wird, teilweise aus subjektiver Kamera gefilmt, und das Ergebnis sieht man schließlich in einer großzügigen Totalen: Die gehackte Cheryl auf dem Boden verstreut.
Das Remake aktualisiert die Darstellung der Gewalt des Originals durchaus gekonnt, die Wucht und ständige Penetration des Zuschauers mit Widerlichkeiten entspricht weitgehend Raimis Tour De Force im Original und das Remake ist da ziemlich nahe dran. Allerdings ist extreme Gewaltdarstellung im Jahr 2013 nachdem Tortureporn im Mainstream mitspielen darf und Filmen wie Hostel, Saw oder auch Last House On The Left freilich nicht mehr besonders bahnbrechend.
Auch fehlt die verspielte Überdrehtheit aus aufplatzenden und irre lachenden Dämonen, die das Original trotz seiner extremen Blutorgien so klar in der Horror-Fantasy verorteten. Das Remake wirkt oft sehr mies gelaunt und humorlos, der gewalttätige Stock im Arsch des Horrorkinos 2013, den man so auch in verklemmten Machwerken aus dem Tortureporn-Genre sehen kann. Es ist eben auch nur ein Kind seiner Zeit.

The Echo Nest ist wohl die größte Datenbank rund um Musik, die sie Streaming-Services per API zur Verfügung stellt und mit der die sich dann Empfehlungsfunktionen und sowas basteln können. Jetzt haben sie in einem ziemlich spannenden Posting aufgeschrieben, mit welchen Methoden sich musikalische Spammer auf Musik-Services an die Hits dranhängen und ihre Fake-Alben stellenweise bis in die Billboard-Charts bringen.
The very best type of music spammers — the ones whose music elicits the best mix of hysterical laughter and retributive threats when you play them for friends — are the cloners. These groups record their own versions of popular songs, replicating the originals as closely as possible with whatever time and talent they have. (Spoiler: Often, that’s not very closely.)
These cloned songs are credited to “artists” such as The Hit Crew, Hip Hop’s Finest, #1 Hits Now, DJ New Release — names that could, and often do, pass for compilation titles. They might be named after the very song they’re cloning (“Call Me Maybe,” “Thrift Shop”) or a lyric from it (“Here’s My Number,” “Party Rock Is In The House Tonight”). The name doesn’t matter, so long as it’s close enough to fool people into clicking on the track without thinking twice.

In dem Zusammenhang sollte man vielleicht noch Michel Montecrossa erwähnen, dessen Vimeo-Channel es auf stolze 224 Videos bringt, die er alle paar Tage auf der Musicvideo-Community bei Antville postet. Der Typ hängt sich grundsätzlich an aktuelle politische Themen und singt in gebrochenem Englisch zu nichtssagenden Songs, auffällig ist aber das dicke Studio und die Produktion Values.
Ich hab’ da mal vor ein paar Jahren recherchiert und vermute da irgendwelche Sektenhintergründe („a German media entrepreneur, author, musician, painter, film-maker, futurist, consciousness researcher and founder of Mirapuri, the City of Peace and Futureman in Europe“), die Website ist dann auch eher bizarr. Eine einfache Suche nach Mirapuri spuckt dann noch das aus: „Mirapuri is the humanistic-spiritual, european, free-consciousness City of Peace and Future Man in Italy founded by Michel Montecrossa on the basis of the worldpeace and progress ideals of Sri Aurobindo and Mira Alfassa – The Mother.“ Yeah, right.
Ich weiß jetzt natürlich nicht, ob der Typ einfach nur ein einfacher Musik-Spammer ist, oder auf diese Tour „nur“ Bauernfängerei für seinen Cyber-Hippie-Orden betreiben will (ode noch schlimmer: Das alles wirklich ernst meint!) Wie auch immer: Lustig-spannendes Thema.

One of the key innovations of anti-gravity object modelling is the use of thermosetting polymers instead of thermoplastics that are used in existing 3D printers. The material is cured because of a chemical reaction between two source components with such proportion of extrusion and movement speeds that it comes solid out of the nozzle; this feature makes it possible to print hanging curves without support material.
The desired shape is created by user in CAD software and then transformed into 3d curves describing the shape which are then converted into movement paths for the robotic arm. The thickness of the printed curve can be scaled down to less than a millimeter and can be adjusted during the printing process, by changing the speed of the movement. Colors can be injected in the nozzle in CMYK mode that allows changing of the curve color throughout the printing process.

Glitched P2P-Moviestream as Art
Schönes Projekt von Nicolas Maigret, der zusammen mit Brendan Howell eine Installation gecoded hat, die zufällige Torrents aus den Pirate Bay Top 100 runterlädt und die Datenpakete on the fly auf eine Leinwand schmeisst. Das Teil ist vor allem eine Visualisierung von P2P im Kontrast zu vergangener „Piraten-Technologie“ wie VHS und setzt das in den Kontext fragmentierter Narration. Spannend!
From a cinematic perspective this preliminary fragmentation of the media is also a fragmentation of the film material and of the narration. These “broadcasting mechanics” come with specific formal opportunities: mashup cinema, random editing, weaving together different films frame by frame, glitches and merging of different fragments.
This installation suggests a way to perceive the digital filmic medium as a stream, or rather as streams distributed on a global scale. In other words, The Pirate Cinema intends to re-explore films through the logic of cables, which is unique to each connection and location.
