Die Installation Bear 71 wird grade auf dem Sundance Filmfestival gezeigt und ist irgendwo zwischen Naturdoku, Datenvisualisierung und interaktivem Storytelling. Bear 71 erzählt die Geschichte einer Grizzly-Bärin, die über 11 Jahre nonstop überwacht wurde, die Filmemacher bekamen Zugang zu den Daten und rekonstruierten daraus das Leben der Bärin. Bear 71’s story is consistently played out in places all over the globe where humans and wildlife intersect – from cougars in Nova Scotia to Bears in suburban Vancouver to Bear culls in New Jersey. It highlights how our growing dependence on technology divorces us from nature, even while allowing us to keep closer tabs on it. It raises questions about how we view nature, how we view ourselves in relation to technology and nature, and the nature and validity of surveillance both in the wild, and within human society.

Wilco’s sweet, whimsical love song comes from their latest album, the 2012 Grammy-nominated The Whole Love. The video is directed by Darren Romanelli, the fashion and pop culture innovator who conceived the collaboration between Wilco and King’s flagship character.
This collaboration between American icons is one of the first music videos Wilco has released since 1999 and it presents the band to the masses in a fresh, new way: as animated images, side-by-side with Popeye and his friends Olive Oyl, Swee’ Pea, Wimpy and Bluto.

Im Sommer hatte ich über die iPad-App „The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore“ gebloggt, sowas wie ein interaktiver Kurzfilm. Und der wurde heute für einen Oscar nominiert, woraufhin die Moonbot Studios das Ding grade eben komplett bei Vimeo hochgeladen haben. Der Film ist absolut fantastisch, jeden seiner Preise hat er hochverdient gewonnen und ich drücke alle Daumen, dass da jetzt noch ein Oscar dazukommt. Unbedingt ansehen, jede der 15 Minuten davon sind pure Magie.

Schicker SciFi-Kurzfilm von Aaron Sims, der als Concept Designer unter anderem an War of the Worlds, Green Lantern, Planet of the Apes und The Thing mitarbeitete. Das Ding leidet (so wie viele Kurzfilme von Designern oder Effektleuten) leider an einer eher dünnen Story, die nicht so richtig zu Ende erzählt wird, dafür sieht das aber alles richtig gut aus. Immerhin.
Sims is a creature/conceptual designs with a prolific resume in some of the biggest summer blockbuster including Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Transformers and The Thing. Its produced through his own company and his visual effects outfit, Archetype VFX and it stars Robert Joy (Land of the Dead, CSI:NY) and David Anders (Heros, 24).

Awhile back a friend of mine forwarded me a site where an artist had made posters of films that, title wise, we were familiar with, but there was a slight difference; they were remade as if they belonged to a different era or a different genre, the name of the movie was there, but the actors were different, the style was different, and I loved the concept. So I went forward with this theme; what if movies we were all familiar with were made a different slice of time? Who would be in it? Who would direct it? So here we are…

The building of the Stormtrooper cake was an epic event in and of itself. It took our entire wonderful crew of ten people two full weeks of to put this guy together (although the cake wasn’t added until 2 days before it was to be served). Along the way we even had to invent completely new cake making methods so it could be put together modularly onsite, hold its fondant over long vertical stretches, and stand on two beautifully sculpted Rice Kripsy legs that supported his 300 lb body –all while keeping every bit of cake tasting light, fluffy, and delicious!

Hier der Trailer zu „Road to the Stars“, einer Doku über Richard „Lord British“ Garriotts Ausflug ins All. Der Mann hat Ultima programmiert und wäre fast der erste Tourist im All geworden, wenn ihm die scheiß Dotcom-Bubble dazwischen gekommen wäre. Der Film hatte bereits 2010 auf dem SXSW-Festival Premiere, läuft aber erst jetzt in den USA an und wird bei uns wahrscheinlich bis auf ein paar Festivalscreenings nie zu sehen sein. Ich hab’ mir grade zum Wachwerden Mike Mignolas Cartoon-Umsetzung seines Comics „The Amazing Screw-On-Head“ angesehen, in dem ein Roboterkopf als Agent Abraham Lincolns Jagd auf einen Emperor Zombie macht. Der Pilot wurde 2006 auf dem SciFi-Channel ausgestrahlt, die Serie wurde aber nie produziert. Voiceactors sind unter anderem Patton Oswalt und Paul Giamatti. Schöner Trailer zur kommenden Doku „Pablo“ über einen der bekanntesten Typografen und Designer von Filmintros, den kein Schwein kennt. Der Mann hat am gleichen Tag Geburtstag wie ich und gestaltete die Vorspänne oder Trailer zu unter anderem (Achtung, festhalten): Bullitt, Beetlejuice, To Live and Die in L.A., Addams Family, Men in Black, A Clockwork Orange, Good Will Hunting, Jesus Christ Superstar, Zardoz oder Harold and Maude. Whoa! Regie führte ein Mann mit dem bemerkenswerten Namen Richard Goldgewicht.
Pablo blends documentary and animation elements to tell the saga of “famous unknown” Pablo Ferro, a man with a personal journey that spans from Havana, during the pre-Cuban revolution to his current home, in the garage behind his son’s house.
The animation part of the film takes us through the dream-scape of Pablo’s memories, while the documentary footage chronicles a very eccentric lifestyle of a 72 year old artist, once hailed by Stanley Kubrick as the father of the sixties look and the MTV aesthetics.

Ganz toller Trailer zu „Shut up and play the hits“ über den letzten Auftritt von LCD Soundsystem letztes Jahr. LCD waren ja eine der Konsens-Bands des vergangenen Jahrzehnts und auch wenn ich längst nicht alles von Murphys Truppe wirklich gut fand, ziehe ich meinen Hut vor dieser ganz klaren Vision eines zerschossenen Disco-Sounds, dessen Glitter nach Achselschweiß roch. Sehr stringent und diese konzertierte Auflösung mit einem vierstündigen Abschiedskonzert war dann auch der mehr als konsequente Höhepunkt.
Der Trailer erinnert übrigens nicht nur wegen des „Plots“ an die Blur-Doku „No Distance left to run“: Inszeniert wurde Shut up nämlich von Dylan Southern und Will Lovelace, die bereits bei Distance Regie führten. Die zwei spezialisieren sich wohl scheinbar auf Filme über Band-Breakups. Soll mir recht sein, wenn so super Sachen dabei rauskommen. Für Blur waren die beiden für ‘nen Grammy nominiert, ich schätze mal, hierfür gewinnen sie einen.

X-Posting von den Filmfreunden: Auf Reddit postet seit Jahresbeginn ein User namens Vidzilla Montagen bekannter Websites während der beginnenden Zombie-Apokalypse. Konsens ist wohl, dass es sich um ein Viral für den ersten Trailer zu „World War Z“ handeln soll, seit dem in einem der Bilder ein Easteregg aufgetaucht ist: „There was an easteregg with a .zip file called 41yad.zip.“ Ziemlich stimmige Theorie, in ein paar Tagen wissen wir mehr und selbst wenn es kein WWZ-Viral ist, finde ich das Dings superunterhaltsam, der könnte gerne so das ganze Jahr weitermachen.
Ich hab’ seit einer Weile den YT-Channel von ZZZFROMHELLZZZ abonniert und der hat gestern gleich drei tolle Dokus hochgeladen: Die PBS-Doku „Pioneers of Television – Science Fiction“ sowie Episode Zwei (über Philip K. Dick) und Vier (über Arthur C. Clarke) der von Ridley Scott produzierten Discovery-Channel-Doku „Prophets of Science Fiction“, deren ersten Staffelteil ich mir zwischen den Jahren angesehen hatte. Alles tolle Dinger, sollte man alle gesehen haben.

Ende letzten Jahres entdeckte ich das Blog Teleport City, die reviewen ab und zu billige Z-Filme aus den 80ern. Schönes Ding und gestern haben sie eine echte Perle gebloggt: Ein Review zum mexikanischen Punxploitationfilm „Intrepidos Punks“. Alleine die Screenshots sind schon fantastisch! Und weil das Internet super ist, gibt’s den kompletten Film auf Youtube (Der Clip startet mit nem viel zu langen Screen des Verleihs und mit einem Trailer zu nem komischen Mexiko-Western namens „La Muerte de un Pistolero“, der Film fängt an bei Minute 3:36):
When it comes to punksploitation movies, you’re going to be hard-pressed to top Intrepidos Punks. Even genre heavyweights like Class of 1984 and Never Too Young to Die pale in comparison to this batshit insane paen to everything that was glorious about cinema’s misrepresentation of punks. It’s basically every alarmist rumor about punk rock — not to mention just about every single convention of 70s exploitation film — rolled into a single representation: drugs, orgies, spitting, bad hair, Satanic rituals, murder, rape, loud music, makin’ faces at the squares, and with the addition of dune buggies and, for some reason that can only be “because it’s Mexico,” a luchadore. We begin with a line of nuns walking down the street to a bank, which they promptly rob. Because these aren’t nuns at all; these are the women of the titular intrepidos punks, amassing cash so they can buy weapons and drugs that will help them free the imprisoned male members of the gang.
The reveal of the female punks is perhaps the greatest transformation scene in cinema history, as they strip away their nun duds to reveal leather thongs, metal bikini tops, sequins, chains, lace, mesh, breasts, and all manner of candy colored punk rock hair. The leader is the sneering, snarling Beast, played by actress Princess Lea (obviously her real name), and the height of her platinum blonde hairdo defies all known physics. And though her hair and studded leather bikini may be one of the star attractions, my heart was immediately stolen by the girl with the choppy red hair and spider-web face paint. For me, the true stars of the film are the girl with the spiky red hair and spiderweb face paint and the guy with the bright red poodle perm mullet, Fu Manchu mustache, lazy sort of expression, and exceptionally proud posture.
Giancarlo Esposito aka „Gus Fring“ spielte in den Staffeln zwei bis vier von Breaking Bad wahrscheinlich die interessante Figur gespielt, die in den letzten Jahren im Fernsehen zu sehen war. Vor ein paar Tagen ist auf Youtube die erste animierte Version von Tolkiens The Hobbit aufgetaucht, geschrieben von Gene Deitch, produziert von Bill Snyder (Tom & Jerry, Popeye). Das Ding wurde innerhalb eines Monats fertiggestellt, nachdem die beiden ein paar Jahre an einem abendfüllenden Spielfilm arbeiteten. Als schließlich die Rechte zum Buch drohten, an die Tolkien Foundation zurückzufallen, haben sie schnell den Film oben zusammengedengelt. Als Film eher okayish, als Zeitdokument aber sehr bemerkenswert.
A long-lost version of The Hobbit by animation legend Gene Deitch has resurfaced online in the past few days. Why did Gene produce this 12-minute “animatic” version instead of the feature-length version he’d originally planned with Jiří Trnka? Why did he have just one month to produce it? Why has nobody ever seen it? The crazy circumstances that led to the production are revealed in this piece that Gene wrote on his website. In short, the film was a financial ploy by Deitch’s producer William L. Snyder to earn himself a nice chunk of change. Deitch writes:
The Tolkien estate had now been offered a fabulous sum for the rights, and [William] Snyder’s rights would expire in one month. They were already rubbing their hands together. But Snyder played his ace: to fulfill just the letter of the contract – to deliver a “full-color film” of THE HOBBIT by June 30th. All he had to do was to order me to destroy my own screenplay – all my previous year’s work, and hoke up a super-condensed scenario on the order of a movie preview, (but still tell the entire basic story from beginning to end), and all within 12 minutes running time – one 35mm reel of film. Cheap. I had to get the artwork done, record voice and music, shoot it, edit it, and get it to a New York projection room on or before June 30th, 1966! I should have told him to shove it, but I was basically his slave at the time. It suddenly became an insane challenge.
