Hier das fünfte Video aus dem Videotones-Projekt, das sämtliche Tracks aus dem letzen Mashup-Album der Kleptones bebildern wird, diesmal zum Track „Untired“, einem Remix von Foo Fighters’ „Tired of You“. Der Song ist ein bisschen schnarchig, passt aber hervorragend zu den Bildern aus dem 1980er Meisterwerk von Ken Russel: „Altered States“:

Altered States is a 1980 science fiction film adaptation of a novel by the same name by playwright and screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky. It was the only novel that Chayefsky ever wrote, as well as his final film. Both the novel and the film are based on John C. Lilly’s sensory deprivation research conducted in isolation tanks under the influence of psychoactive drugs like ketamine and LSD.

Dieses Video hat alles: Einen (tatsächlich) ziemlich guten Song, japanische Herren in Frauenkleidern, tanzende Cheerleader, Kids, buntes Rumgeflacker und… James „The Godfather of Soul“ Brown bei Minute 2:00. Der Begriff „Epic“ beschreibt die unfassbare Großartigkeit dieses Video nichtmal annähernd. O-Haaaaaaa!

Dane Lovetts Gemälde sind meistens nicht mehr als nett, aber seine Bilder einer 303 und einer 808 sind absolut whoa! Und das Bild der 303 heisst dann auch noch, wait for it: Acid Party! Doppelwhoa!

Ein alter Mann mit einem Vogelhut sitzt auf einer Bank und macht das, was alte Männer mit Vögelhüten nunmal so tun: Seltsame Musik spielen nämlich, die direkt aus einem Bud Spencer & Terrence Hill-Film stammen könnte. Soundtracks aus Bud Spencer & Terrence Hill-Filmen sind sowieso ein extrem unterforschtes Thema und wo wir grade bei Filmen und alten Männern mit Vogelhüten sind:

Ob dieser alte Mann mit einem Vogelhut sich in seiner Freizeit ebenfalls auf Bänke gesetzt hat und komische Musik spielte, kann ich nicht sagen… für die komische Musik damals war aber auch David Bowie verantwortlich, wobei man jetzt allerdings nicht sagen kann, dass David Bowie in Labyrinth einen alten Mann mit einem Vogelhut auf dem Kopf spielte, eher ‘nen seltsamen Typen in zu engen Leggins mit Tina Turner-Frisur, aber das führt jetzt wirklich zu weit und hat ja jetzt auch wirklich nix mehr mit dem alten Mann und seinem Vogelhut da oben zu tun. Ich merke grade: Alte Männer mit Vogelhüten auf dem Kopf verwirren mich sehr.

Knapp 8minütiger Teaser auf eine kommende Doku über Vinyl-Sammler namens „To have and to hold“. Sehr liebevoll gemacht und sicherlich eine der besseren Vinyl-Dokus, die ich normalerweise in meine Links (hier mein Vinyl-Tag auf Delicious) packe.

Add this one to your list of must see vinyl inspired documentaries and movies. Director Jony Lyle gives a quick teaser of his upcoming film entitled To Have & To Hold, which Lyle describes as “a ‘musicmentory’ to celebrate the age of vinyl records.”

The film promises enough archive footage, records rooms, music collections, pressing plants, and rare vinyl to satisfy even the most die hard physical music addicts. In addition to its irresistible collectible eye candy, To Have & To Hold, which is scheduled for a 2010 release, features interviews with such notable vinyl aficionados as Questlove, Chuck D, Bobbito Garcia, DJ Amir, Bruce Lundvall, Christian Marclay, and Paul Mawhinney.

Für das Album „March 3“ von The Few Moments hat Ira Marcks eine mehr als 15 Meter breite Illustration gemalt, die im Video zum Album innerhalb von 45 Minuten an einem vorüber zieht. Das Album kann man hier kaufen, hier mehr Infos zu den Illus und hier hat Jake Lodwick die ganze Story aufgeschrieben.

After wrapping the record, I asked my favorite illustrator Ira if he wanted to do something kind of… weird. Let’s not make a music video and let’s not make ‘album art’. Ira, can you make a loooonnnng illustration that scrolls across the viewer’s screen for the entire 45 minute album? He said, Sounds good, pay up and I’ll get back to you in a few months.

The months dragged on (but who cares when ART MUST EXIST WITHOUT COMPROMISE?) … And he returned with 50 feet of painstakingly, achingly detailed and imaginative, hand-drawn art. Totally original stuff — the sort of magic you only get when one brilliant person tunnels into an impossibly ambitious project for a really long time.

Beck hat schon seit einer ganzen Weile das Projekt Recordclub laufen, wo er sich Gastmusiker ins Studio holt und in einem einzigen Tag ein komplettes Album covert. Diesmal hat er sich die Liars und noch ein paar andere geschnappt und INXS’ „Kick“-Album, der erste Song ist online und das ganze hört sich mehr als spannend an.

Joining in this time we had three of my favorite bands— Liars, Annie Clark and Daniel Hart from St. Vincent, Sergio Dias from the legendary Brazilian band Os Mutantes, as well as RC veteran Brian Lebarton, just back from the Charlotte Gainsbourg tour. The record covered this time was 1987 blockbuster ‘Kick’ by INXS. The record was chosen by fellow Aussie, Angus from the Liars. It was recorded in a little over 12 hours on March 3rd, 2010. It was an intense, hilarious, daunting and completely fun undertaking.

Iggy Pop hat mit 62 Jahren beschlossen, mit Stagediving aufzuhören, nachdem ihn das Publikum der New Yorker Carnegie Hall, nun ja, nicht auffing und er sich ein paar Blessuren zuzog. Von Chartattack.com: „’When I landed, it hurt, and I made a mental note that Carnegie Hall would be a good place for my last stage dive,’ Pop said, according to the World Entertainment News Network. ‘The audience were just like, ‘What are you doing?’“

Die Takeaway-Shows von La Blogotheque verfolge ich eher so am Rande und derzeit noch weniger, da ich mich grade sehr vom Indie-Sound wegbewege. Wie auch immer, das neueste Video ihrer Reihe zeigt I’m from Barcelona, die direkt nach einem Konzert durch die Straßen von Paris latschen, ganz groß.

Vince Clark (Depeche Mode, Erasure, Yazoo) lebte nach seiner Hochzeit ein paar Jahre in New York, hat es dann in der Stadt irgendwann nicht mehr ausgehalten und hat sich in Maine im Wald eine Hütte gebaut, die er „The Cabin“ nennt. Und in der stehen dutzende seiner analogen Synthies rum. Motherboard hat ihn dort besucht und den feuchten Traum aller Synthie-Fans in Form eines Videos mitgebracht.

Vince Clarke is a man synonymous with synth pop and a legend in the history of electronic music. He’s famous for founding three of the most popular and lasting musical acts in history: Depeche Mode, Yazoo and Erasure. But his distinct sonic output depends upon another feat: he has spent the last 30 years amassing one of the world’s most impressive collections of rare, ‘holy grail’ analogue synthesizers.

In 2004, Clarke left England for the unsynthesized woods of Maine, where he constructed a temple for these monolithic machines he calls ‘The Cabin,”. and began branching out into (gasp!) software synths too. Recently Motherboard made a pilgrimage to Clarke’s purpose-built digital/analogue studio to meet the musical titan, hear the story of his musical journey, learn how to make the perfect pop song, and get a little demonstration of one of his signature moves: building a drum pattern from a wall of modular synths. To Clarke, music is still magic even now, an alchemy in which he gets to make “something from nothing.”

Hier die Musikvideos der letzten paar Tage. Den Anfang muss natürlich Massive Attacks Clip zu „Saturday Come Slow“ machen, der eigentlich einen Kurzfilm zum Thema „Musik als Folterinstrument“ darstellt.

Filmed inside Cambridge University’s anechoic chamber (designed to create total silence) and featuring former Guantanamo Bay detainee, Ruhal Ahmed, this short by Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin is a reflection on Ahmed’s experiences whilst in detention (particularly how he was interrogated using high-volume music) and about the use of human sound on the body.

Mir erschließt sich Kaffee ja nicht wirklich, einen Milchkaffee krieg’ ich noch geregelt, ab dem zweiten bricht mir der Schweiß aus und ab dem dritten klettere ich zitternd auf der Zimmerdecke rum, is’ aber wurscht, weil Dave Grohl auf Kaffee-Flash rockt.

Hier der Trailer zur Doku „The Electro Wars“ über die Electro-Szene in Amerika, Musikblogs und Remix-Kultur. Der Trailer ist leider ziemlich suboptimal geschnitten, was die Doku ziemlich konfus und sehr holprig erzählt erscheinen lässt, aber der Inhalt klingt dennoch ziemlich interessant und außerdem haben sie die richtigen Leute am Start. Ein paar Musikvideos, die mir die Tage so untergekommen sind. Oben das Video zu „Home Taping is Killing Music“ von Dan Bull. Eigentlich kein richtiges Musikvideo, sondern Teil einer Kampagne des UK-ISPs TalkTalk gegen die britischen ThreeStrikes-Pläne für Filesharer „Don’t disconnect us“.

Musician Dan Bull, whose letters to Lily Allen and Lord Mandelson both become huge hits on YouTube, has penned another ditty; this time about the music industry’s consistent refusal to accept or adapt to new technology, from the gramophone to the jukebox to commercial radio to the internet. His song, and accompanying video courtesy of TalkTalk, focuses on the most famous campaign, the ill-judged 80s classic; Home Taping is Killing Music.

Hier das Video zur neuen Single „Ruins“ von O Children, die Band mit dem Sänger aus der Gruft, deren erstes Video zur „Dead Disco Dancer“ so ein mittlerer Youtube-Hit war. Der neue Song kommt zwar nicht an den toten Disco-Tänzer ran, ist aber immer noch anständig und selbstverständlich steht über allem immer noch ganz groß „Sisters of Mercy“ geschrieben. O Children kommen mit ihrem Sound zwar rund vier oder fünd Jahre zu spät, macht aber nix, solange irgendwann vielleicht ein neuer Temple of Love bei rauskommt.

OK Go haben die EMI verlassen und ein eigenes Label namens Paracadute gegründet („humanity’s second most fun word to say ['pamplemousse' was taken]“). Das ganze lief natürlich alles einvernehmlich und ohne Streit, ich werde aber das komische Gefühl nicht los, dass EMIs Geoblocking-„Strategie“, über die ich im Zusammenhang mit OK Gos ersten Video für „This too shall pass“ hier gebloggt hatte, etwas damit zu tun haben könnte.

OK Go has struck out on its own. The band has left the EMI family of corporations to form their own enterprise, a homemade upstart called Paracadute. In addition to being humanity’s second most fun word to say (”pamplemousse” was taken), Paracadute is really just a way for the boys to continue doing what they’ve always done. Which is whatever they want. Being OK Go just got a little bit easier.

So please join me in welcoming Paracadute into the world. As yet, there’s no building, no logo, no employee manual. Just the band, some paperwork, and a bunch of insane ideas. Plus two dogs in suits. Exciting stuff.

Über das fantastische Projekt The Beatles Complete On A Ukulele habe ich jetzt schon ein Jahr lang nicht mehr gebloggt: Roger und Dave wollen zusammen mit Gastmusikern alle 185 Beatles-Songs bis zur Abschlußfeier der Olympischen Spiele 2012 in London covern und da sind bislang nicht weniger als 60 Cover-Versionen zusammengekommen. Jede einzelne davon kommt mit Background-Story zum Song und überhaupt: Super!
