Canberra’s centenary hot-air balloon, the Skywhale, proved provocative when it was unveiled on Thursday. Designed by renowned sculptor and former Canberran Patricia Piccinini, the $170,000 balloon is part of the capital’s centenary celebrations and measures more than 34 metres from nose to tail. Piccinini, who grew up in Canberra and now lives in Melbourne, said it was challenging and exhilarating to create a piece of art that would be seen in such a public forum.

Demo für Netzneutralität und gegen Drosselkom
Der Digitale Gesellschaft e.V. und D64 haben zu einem Aktionstag für Netzneutralität aufgerufen und eine Demo für morgen zur Aktionärshauptversammlung der Telekom-Wichte geplant. Gleichzeitig hat Mathias dazu eine Kampagne entwickelt mit 6 Motiven, die man seiner Oma schicken soll (ein Motiv habe ich aus Layoutgründen weggelassen… das Fußballmotiv, natürlich).
Die Deutsche Telekom startete mit ihren Tarifänderungen einen Frontalangriff auf die Netzneutralität in Deutschland. Nun lädt die Telekom am morgigen Donnerstag, dem 16.5., zu ihrer jährlichen Aktionärshauptversammlung in die Lanxess Arena Köln ein. Das Bündnis für Netzneutralität und gegen digitale Diskriminierung, in dem sich auch der Verein Digitale Gesellschaft engagiert, hat daher zu einem Aktionstag “Netzneutralität” rund um die Lanxess Arena am Willi-Brandt-Platz 2 in Köln aufgerufen.

Ich behaupte, ohne die Youtuber kriegen wir (wie bei ACTA) hier keine kritische Masse hin. Deshalb habe ich grade das Management von Y-Titty angeschrieben (könnt Ihr auch machen, spread the word), denn die Pläne der Telekom sind gleichzeitig mit dem Angriff auf die Netzneutralität vor allem ein Angriff auf das Business von Jungs und Mädels wie Y-Titty (mit deren Kram ich ansonsten nur herzlich wenig anfangen kann). Und sollten wir mit denen eine Aktion hinbekommen, dann kann sich die Telekom schonmal warm anziehen.
Bis dahin sollten sich erstmal alle, die morgen in Köln sind und die Zeit haben, die Zeit nehmen und den Exceltabellenverstehern in Magenta ziemlich laut auf die Nüsse gehen.

Ganz, ganz großartiger Trailer zu Ari Folmans The Congress mit Harvey Keitel und Robin Wright, der lose auf Stanislav Lems Der futurulogische Kongress basiert. Ari Folman hatte 2008 den fantastischen Waltz with Bashir gedreht, und wie bei Waltz mischt er hier wieder Animation und Realfilm zu einem opulenten und für Lem angemessen weird aussehenden SciFi-Dingsbums, Der Film feiert auf dem Cannes Filmfest im Mai Premiere, für mich ein Pflichtfilm – ich liebe Stanislav Lem und ich liebe Waltz With Bashir und die Kombination aus beiden macht mich wirklich ziemlich feucht im Schritt.
Auf dem Poster sieht man übrigens im Hintergrund Picasso mit einer Blondine im Arm entlanglatschen, Osama Bin Laden und Jesus mit einem Herz-Tattoo-Print auf seinem Gewand. Der Trailer ist jetzt bereits gespickt mit Filmzitaten, mit The Congress könnte Ari Folman sein Mashup aus Tarantinoschem Zitatkino, französischem Fantasy-Opus und polnischer Science Fiction geschaffen haben und – ich beton’s extra nochmal – mich macht das extrem feucht im Schritt. Absolutes und komplettes Must Watch. Endlich eine angemessene Lem-Verfilmung. Ichkriegmichgarnichmehreinfantastisch. Mindblowing.
A loose adaptation of Stanislaw Lem’s “The Futurological Congress,” a 1971 black humour science fiction detailing the exploits of the hero of a number of his books, Ijon Tichy, as he visits the Eighth World Futurological Congress at the Costa Rica Hilton. The book is Lem’s take on the common sci-fi trope of an apparently Utopian future that turns out to be an illusion.

Mondotees haut am Donnerstag ein paar schöne Prints zu den Filmen von Paul Thomas Anderson raus, die ich (fast) allesamt fantastisch finde. Nur Hard Eight habe ich nie gesehen und Punch Drunk Love halte ich für überbewerteten Müll – und ganz dem entsprechend ist auch das Poster hier das schwächste –, was umso erstaunlicher ist, wenn man bedenkt, dass ich Boogie Nights, Magnolia und There Will Be Blood allesamt für Meisterwerke halte. Einen Print zu The Master hatten sie bereits bei ihrer Oscar 2013-Posterserie am Start und hier kann ich mich beim besten Willen nicht entscheiden, ob ich Blood oder Boogie besser finden soll. Project Steampunk-Dickhead: Neural Network grown from Foreskin-Cells
Guy Ben-Ary und Dr. Kirsten Hudson haben für ihr In-Potentia-Projekt aus Zellen einer Vorhaut zunächst Stammzellen generiert und die per Bio-Engineering in Gehirnzellen verwandelt. Die haben dann ein „lebendes“ neuronales Netzwerk gebildet: Ein Gehirn aus einem Penis. Ein Pimmelkopf, sozusagen. Und der lebt in einem Steampunk-Dingsbums. Ich halte das Ding hier für ein bisschen bullshitty und das Steampunk-Teil für ein sinnloses Gimmick, so ein wahlloses „Wir schmeißen mal das hippe Steampunk und das hippe Bio-Engineering zusammen und packen noch Pimmel mit rein, höhö“. Aber egal, einen Pimmelkopf muss ich mir dann doch hier reinkleben, und sei es nur zur Dokumentation egalerer Science-Art.
In potēntia by Guy Ben-Ary and Kirsten Hudson, is a liminal, boundary creature of animate and inanimate matter that visually problematises the shifting cultural, ethical and political forces that govern and determine understandings of life, death and personhood.
Informed by the aesthetics of steam punk, retro-futurism and eighteenth century scientific paraphernalia, in potēntia is a speculative techno-scientific experiment that uses a stem cell reprogramming technique called induced pluripotent stem cell technology (iPS) to reverse engineer foreskin cells purchased from an online catalogue into embryonic (like) stem cells, which Ben-Ary and Hudson then transform into neurons. What results is a real functioning neural network or “biological brain” encased within a purpose built sculptural incubator, containing a DIY bio-reactor (or life-support system) as well as a custom-made electrophysiological recording setup that converts neural activity into an unsettling soundscape.

For years now, the legacy entertainment industry has been predicting its own demise, claiming that the rise of technology, by enabling easy duplication and sharing — and thus copyright infringement — is destroying their bottom line. If left unchecked, they say, it is not only they that will suffer, but also the content creators, who will be deprived of a means to make a living. And, with artists lacking an incentive to create, no more art will be produced, starving our culture.
It seems obvious to many that this could not possibly be true, so last year we looked into the numbers to get an honest picture of the state of things. Now, we’re following up with a closer look at six key markets: Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Russia and Spain. Schöne Visualisierung des internen Netzwerks auf Reddit von sharkbait784, welche Sub-Reddits mit welchen am engsten verbunden sind und am häufigsten aufeinander verlinken. Schade, dass er die bekannten Subreddits per se rausgeschmissen hat und nicht optional zuschaltbar sind. Immer noch superinteressant und schön zu sehen, welche Sub-Netzwerke es dort gibt. Der Gnubbel rechts ist zum Beispiel das Perv-Network ausgehend von /r/nsfw.
I’ve produced a graph showing links between subreddits, where a link is defined as a redditor posting a link in one subreddit to another subreddit. This graph was based on data collected from public Reddit posts since 2008, kindly provided by Deimorz.
In order to identify the most interesting cliques, the following process was applied to the data (if you aren’t familiar with the nomenclature of graph theory, a “node” is a point on a graph (so one of the subreddits in this case), an “edge” is a link between two nodes and the “degree” of a node is the number of edges connected to it):
- Removed edges between subreddits that have less than eight occurrances.
- Removed nodes with a degree greater than 75 (this was enough to get rid of every sub in the top 20 subreddits (by subscriber). Since these subs are likely to link to a wide variety of topics, an association with one of these subs is not particularly interesting to us.

Auf Ebay kann man derzeit die Original-Miniatur von Flash Gordons Raumschiff ersteigern, die damals in den 30er-Serials benutzt wurde. Ich liebe diese ollen Flash Gordon-Serials, die man sich unter anderem komplett auf Archive.org ziehen kann und ich hab’ selber eine Version von diesem Teil, eine Neuauflage von Marx’ Flash Gordon Rocket Fighters inklusive des Vintage Packaging Designs. Eigentlich muss ich das Teil oben unbedingt haben, aber 250.000 Dollar sind mir dann doch ein keines bisschen zuviel. Damn!
This aluminum rocket ship model was first used in the Fox Films feature Just Imagine (1930). Universal Pictures later acquired the life size model, as well as the miniatures, and used them as Zarkov’s rocket ship in the Flash Gordon serials (1936, 1938 and 1940), starring Buster Crabbe, Jean Rogers and Priscilla Lawson. This basic shape was used throughout, though slight modifications were made over time.
This original miniature was used by Fox Films and Universal Pictures in the 1930′s. The model was swung through the air and brought to life with sparklers, smoke and added sound effects! It features a heavy, aluminum body and a door that folds down into stairs.
