Each derivative demonstrates the progression of scanning and remixing processes I’m developing. The choice of character also raises issues of potential clashes with big copyright holders that could potentially choose to lobby for legislation against 3D scanning. The Disney Corporation fascinates me for paradoxically pioneering remix culture by creating their own versions of public domain characters such as Snow White and Cinderella, and yet the company take a hostile approach against any attempts to copy their own creations.

Drawing its inspiration from Franz Kafka’s novel Metamorphosis, this flexible corset –- Kafka -– represents an insect’s soft torso shell combined with “armour’ (a human spine).
It is 3D-printed in malleable rubber-like material, with leopard’s spots. The ornate, soft-printed texture covering the shell is informed by the curvature of the armour. Denser patterns appear in regions of high curvature, such as those surrounding the joints, providing more flexibility.

Dude 3D-prints his Skull for Art
Caspar Berger macht tolle Experimente mit Selbst-Portraits. Für sein neuestes hat er sich unter einen CT-Scanner gelegt und lässt sein Skelett auf ‘nem 3D-Drucker ausgeben. Mit den Daten und den gedruckten Knochen macht er dann allerlei Unsinn, so hat er beispielsweise seinen Schädel anonym an einen forensischen Anthropologen geschickt, der sein Gesicht rekonstruiert hat. Toll!
In this project, Self-portrait 21, the 3D copy of the skull represents the true image (vera icon). This image has formed the basis for a facial reconstruction by a forensic anthropologist, who received the skull anonymously accompanied only by the information that it belonged to a man in his mid-40s born in Western Europe. This facial reconstruction is based on the available scientific documentation of tissue structure, skin thickness and muscle groups. The clay reconstruction has been cast in bronze to be presented as Self-portrait 21, a self-portrait that has not been made by the artist.

Distorted, glitchy 3D-Printed Silberbesteck
Ich liebe den 3D-Dekonstruktivismus von Eragatory, den’s auch als praktisches Silberbesteck gibt, mit dem man prima den Familienbesuch irritieren kann. Ich esse mein Steak demnächst nur noch mit Glitch. Die Teile kann man normalerweise bei Shapeways bestellen, deren Website ist aber derzeit abgesoffen.
Key elements while designing this set was the notion of decay/processing, ornamental and aesthetic excess as in former rococo and barock times, moments of collapse/disequilibrium and a balance in between etiquette dining and painful torture tools. By subverting the logic of perfection and beauty, non-perfect images coming from controlled methodologies were generated.
What used to be about mastering the result of a non-perfect process is now about the production of monstrosity and the grotesque throughout very accurate mechanisms, like 3d printing. Which creates an unlimited range of possibilities concerning material usage, design approaches/aesthetics and form production.

Patrick scanned his face with a Planmeca ProMax 3D ProFace CAT scan machine from Finland (X-ray setting off, of course), and used a ZPrinter 650 to do a full-color print of his face. Creepy? Yes. Awesome? Yes. The beginning of the freakiest Halloween costume ever? We can only hope!

Kam gestern mit UPS: Mein unendlicher, 3D-gedruckter Super Mario Level-Moebius Loop. Eine zweidimensionale Manifestation einer virtuellen Retrogame-Realität im realen, dreidimensionalen Raum. Unendliche Pixel-Klempner. I’m so in Love.
Sachlich: Ich bin sehr begeistert wegen der Lieferzeit. Ich hatte das Teil am 19. September bei Shapeways in Amerika bestellt, 6 Tage später war das Ding da. Das Material fühlt sich sehr rauh an und die Farben könnten insgesamt etwas satter sein, das ist aber Jammerei auf ‘nem sehr hohen Niveau, weil: Ein Supermariolevel-Moebius-Loop. Bestellen kann man das Teil für ‘nen Zwanni nach wie vor hier, ich hab’ grade drei HighRes-Bilder davon auf Flickr hochgeladen.
