3) Ich verfolge das Bartkira-Projekt auf Tumblr so nebenbei und schau’ da immer wieder mal rein und seit meinem ersten Posting darüber sind da so einige tolle Zeichnungen und Comic-Remix-Seiten aufgetaucht, dass ich mir da wegen der Awesomeness nur noch sehr wenige Sorgen mache. Bartkira: Neo-Springfield is about to E.X.P.L.O.D.E.!
Grandiose Idee von Ryan Humphrey und Harvey James, die das Bartkira-Projekt auf Tumblr angezettelt haben: Ein Remix der kompletten Ausgabe von Katsuhiro Otomos Akira mit Charakteren aus den Simpsons von 468 Teilnehmern. Mit ungefähr 2000 Seiten haben sie da ‘ne Menge zu tun, das Werk soll bis zum 24. Mai fertig werden.
Leider sind die Zeichnungen insgesamt bis jetzt eher… schwierig, um’s mal diplomatisch zu formulieren und das Wort „scheiße“ zu vermeiden (die Seiten oben sind mit die besten, bis jetzt jedenfalls), aber das lässt sich bei einem Amateur-Projekt diesen Ausmaßes wohl nicht vermeiden – und die Idee bleibt immer noch fantastisch.
Verfolgen kann man das Projekt unter dem Tumblr-Tag Bartkira, seinen Ursprung hatte Bartkira mit einer ziemlich hässlichen Serie von Zeichnungen von Ryan Humphrey, hier die Charaktere. (via The Fox is black)
Happy 30th, Akira!
Heute vor 30 Jahren erschien im Young Magazine der erste Teil von Katsuhiro Otomos Akira, der mit diesem Comic einen Meilenstein der Literatur und des Cyberpunk gleichermaßen hinlegte und den japanischen Manga im Westen zum Durchbruch verhalf. Ich entdeckte Akira für mich Mitte der Neunziger, zunächst durch die Verfilmung und schließlich kaufte ich mir alle Sammelbände, die ich mindestens dreimal komplett gelesen habe. Danach hatte ich eine ziemlich kurze, aber heftige Manga- und Anime-Phase und an meiner Liebe zu Japan ist praktisch nur Akira schuld. Danke, Otomo!

Akira Replica Jacket
Nächstes Jahr feiert Akira 30jähriges Jubiläum und das erste Bit dazu ist dieses 1000$-Ding, eine Nachbildung von Kanedas Lederjacke. Sein Bike gibt’s leider nicht dazu.
Does it still count as cosplay if you spend nearly $1,000 on an official replica, or is that just looking really damn good? In any event, the object in question is one of the greatest accoutrements in all of science fiction and comics: the iconic red “capsule” jacket worn by Kaneda in AKIRA. The jacket and an alternate black version are the first pieces of merchandise being offered by Bandai Visual as part of “A” Project, a celebration of AKIRA for the 30th anniversary of the legendary manga by Katsuhiro Otomo.
According to Anime News Network, the jacket is made from oil-softened cowhide leather and comes in medium, large, double-large, and triple-large (Japanese sizes, mind you). A black version is also available, although that one replaces the capsule image with a graphic that reads “2019 A.D. 28 Neo Tokyo.” Both items are available for pre-order now for ¥69,800 or approximately $900.

Comic-Location Travelposter
Schöne Poster zu verschiedenen Locations aus Comics von Justin Van Genderen. Ich weiß zwar nicht, ob ich mich wirklich zu genau dem gezeigten Zeitpunkt in Neo-Tokyo aufhalten wollte, denn schließlich werden erstmal kurz vorher jede Menge Demonstranten erschossen, kurz bevor Tetsuo zu einem riesigen Fleischbällchen mutiert und seine Freundin zerquetscht, woraufhin er von einem fiesen Satellit zerlasert wird und schließlich alles in die Luft fliegt (ja, ich habe mir Akira erst vor ein paar Tagen mal wieder angesehen… immer noch der grandioseste aller Anime, wobei ich zugeben muss, bei dem Thema nicht wirklich drin zu sein), aber ey: Ein Akira-Poster ist besser als kein Akira-Poster.

Hier das 96er Video zu Ken Ishiis „Extra“, das von Kouji Morimoto inszeniert wurde, der schon an Akira mitarbeitete. Das Ding wurde, als MTV noch Musikvideos zeigte, zum Dance Video of the year gewählt. Zu Recht.
Akira Mechanix 2019 Scans
Yay! Großformatige Scans eines mit Stills illustrierten Buchs über die Technologie in Akira, meinem Anime-Alltime-Favoriten.
Published in 1988 by Bandai, this is the Bible of Akira books. It’s full title is AKIRA MECHANIX 2019: Cyber Art & Mechanism From Moving Picture “Akira” and (as the title suggests) it’s about the artwork that went into making the anime.
Divided into 20 chapters, segments include:
- Photographs and vignettes used for promotion/merchandise;
- Character pages and technical model sheets of vehicles/weapons in the film;
- Illustrations/paintings by other Japanese creatives, inspired by AKIRA;
- Info on Kaneda’s Bike- mechanics, inspiration, plans, working models etc;
- Creating the Neo tokyo environment;
- Staff feedback regarding their roles in the film and their inspiration for creating Neo-Tokyo.

Pitchfork Column: Poptimist #10 – Britney in the Black Lodge (Damn Fine Album)
Was Britney Spears und Twin Peaks gemeinsam haben: David Lynch and Mark Frost’s “Twin Peaks” begins with the discovery of a body and spends 30-odd episodes on the trail of a soul, both belonging Laura Palmer, a prom queen of dazzling smile and doubtful habits. The show’s most intense moments happen in a strange spirit-world, a red-draped room where a dwarf converses and dances with a pallid, marble-eyed eidolon of Palmer. Their voices are backwards-looped and treated, their dances a jerky shuffle, all adding to a sense of mocking evil that the rest of the show never tries hard to shake.
On one level Palmer’s story is a cliché– sour secrets of the suburban everygirl, virginal beauty off the rails– but it’s a cliché we seem to have an endless appetite for: Witness the fascination with Britney Spears and her messy life.
First Beatles Podcast
To celebrate the DVD release of “Help!”, which was on November 6, the first ever Beatles podcast has been created. The podcast is narrated by Michael Palin, and so far there are two parts available to listen to. A third part will be released shortly!

20th Century Fox Having Bad Reviews Pulled Off Youtube
Just when you think studios couldn’t act worse… they just keep on surprising you! I’ve just been notified by YouTube that 20th Century Fox has just filed a copyright infringement notice with them to have our review of the ass awful film “Reno 911: Miami” taken off their site and deleted. And before you ask… yes… the review was a negative one.
It is curious that they are claiming copyright infringement. As most of you know, in our video reviews we will cut in clips from the trailers of the movies we’re discussing. Trailers that are made publicly available by the studios for anyone, anywhere to download at anytime. on top of that, according to Stanford’s website, “Fair Use” of material is covered under the category of “COMMENTARY AND CRITICISM”.

One thousand PVC hula hoops have been used to make the Storefront Ring Dome Pavilion in Petrosino Park, in New York. The $3000 structure was built to mark the Storefront for Art and Architecture’s 25th anniversary, and was designed by Seoul-based practice Mass Studies.

What is Pop Surrealism?
In an attempt to explain the art movement Pop Surrealism, Kirsten Anderson, the owner of Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle, gives us her perspectives by firstly differentiating between both Pop Surrealism/Lowbrow terms. From a really interesting interview in My Art Space….
„When I first got involved with this movement a decade ago it was called “Lowbrow”. That term was used by Robert Williams to describe his own work and the work of the artists who sort of orbited him. It was meant tongue-in-cheek, but also it stayed in usage because it unapologetically stated that this art was not trying to appeal to overly academic art critics.“

The item I write of is an “Outer-Space Station,” created by the folks at Woman’s Day, and featured in the pages of that magazine as a creative project that parents could build for their children. While the playset bore no definite connection to the Star Wars universe–and, in fact, it was not endorsed by Lucasfilm–the photos of it that appeared in Woman’s Day were riddled with Kenner Star Wars figures, presumably so that readers would gain a feeling for how the toy could be used.

Intriguing Electric Bike: The EV-X7 Prototype
The intriguing electric bike seen in this video, the EV-X7, has a magnetic motor built into its rear wheel. The motor is a hybrid between a electromagnet and a permanent magnet. It was designed by the Axle Group in Japan. The bike has a range of about 110 miles on a single charge, and a top speed of about 92 mph.
