I had no idea this exists: Ein halbstündiges Infomercial, das die Beasties damals zur Veröffentlichung von Hello Nasty produziert hatten. Der dritte Teil ist leider wegen Bullshits copyrightgefickt.
Taking a less traditional avenue to drum up sales for Hello Nasty, the Beastie Boys have begun airing a half-hour parody of infomercials on cable stations […] The infomercial, directed in low-budget splendor by Tamra Davis (director of the feature films “Gun Crazy” and “CB4″), is a parody of various well-known, half-hour commercials that appear on late-night television. It features Beasties Mike D (a.k.a. Mike Diamond), MCA (a.k.a. Adam Yauch) and Ad-Rock (a.k.a. Adam Horovitz) taking on roles to shill everything from the services of phone psychics to get-rich-quick scams to a food processor that plays songs from their upcoming LP, Hello Nasty (July 14).
Calling the number displayed throughout the parody leads viewers to Grand Royal’s ordering line, allowing them to buy Hello Nasty and have it delivered to their door on July 14. […] The Beastie Boys’ infomercial was placed on local-access stations around the country by On Tour Video, a company that has done similar work for such bands as Megadeth, Tonic and Blur.

Daft Punk – Random Access Memories (Review)
Das neue Album Random Access Memories von Daft Punk streamt seit heute für lau auf iTunes, ein Webrip davon gibt’s bei den bekannten alternativen Distributoren. Ich hab’s mir jetzt komplett angehört und sollte vielleicht vorausschicken, dass Funk jetzt nicht wirklich mein Sound ist. Das erklärt zumindest stellenweise, warum mir das Album sehr oft ziemlich egal ist und ich mindestens einen Track völlig furchtbare Kacke finde. Auf der anderen Seite hat das Album doch so viele grandios fantastische Stellen, dass ich RAM insgesamt gut finden kann, stellenweise brillant, aber eben durchwachsen.
Der erste Track Give Life Back To Music macht ziemlich egal rum, Nile Rogers langweilt sehr mit seiner herkömmlichen Funk-Gitarre, so sehr, dass ich ein paar Minuten bereits vergessen hatte, wie der Track nochmal ging. Kein gutes Zeichen für einen Album-Einstieg. The Game of Love ist eine nette Vocoder-Ballade mit Synths, die direkt aus einem Argento-Film stammen könnten.
Giorgo By Moroder reisst dann definitiv das bisher belanglose Geplänkel aus seiner Lethargie, überrascht mit Interview-Inhalten, dankenswerterweise in den Hintergrund gemischten Funk-Gitarren und einem fast schon hypnotischen Deep House-Ansatz, um dann mit einem völlig unwahrscheinlichen Break grandios zu überraschen. Dann nervt er leider wieder mit dämlichen Funk-Einlagen, nur um hintenraus den völligen Wahnsinn zu entfachen und zum ersten mal zeigt das Album hier seine echt herausragende Stärke: Die grandiose Drum-Arbeit von Quinn und wenn dann hinten raus die Iron Maiden-Gitarren da reinfetzen, sitzt man etwas ungläubig da, vor allem gemessen an den ersten beiden Tracks.

Jack White hat anlässlich des Record Store Days einen 1947er Voice-o-Graph restauriert und in seinem Third Man Record Store aufgestellt, mit dem Teil kann man 6″-Vinyls gegen Münzeinwurf aufnehmen.
On Saturday, April 20th, Jack White and Third Man Records will unveil their Third Man Recording Booth, a refurbished 1947 Voice-o-Graph machine that records up to 2 minutes of audio and dispenses a one-of-a-kind 6″ phonograph disc to the user. Daft Punk launch new Album at the Wee Waa Show
Damit haben Daft Punk die Musik-News des Jahres so gut wie sicher: Ihr neues Album „Random Access Memories“ feiert Premiere auf einem Dorffest im Australischen Outback. Das 2000-Seelen-Kaff heisst Wee Waa (Google Map), das Fest nennt sich Wee Waa Show und neben dem nicht so ganz unwichtigen Album-Debut gibt’s noch „Australian country show entertainment including the pet show, showgirl competition, cross cut saw competition, fireworks and much more.“ Das Fest hat noch dazu eine Nutzviehausstellung und sie zeigen da „some of the western plains’ of New South Wales’ finest sheep and cattle“. The launch of the new album, Random Access Memories, will take place during the Wee Waa Show on the night of May 17, and streamed online to an international audience. Narrabri Shire Council and the Wee Waa Show Society have been working in close contact with Sony Music to make the event a reality.
Some have questioned why such a world-renowned band would choose to launch its new album in an Australian country town, but for Sony Music, the choice was easy. “We think Wee Waa is so uniquely Australian, so the folks at Sony Music along with Daft Punk thought it fitted the bill perfectly,” said Narrabri Shire Council mayor, Conrad Bolton.
“Daft Punk is known for breaking down barriers and coming up with new creative, innovative ideas to launch their albums.”
The Wee Waa Showground will host a playback of the new album, which has been hotly anticipated by millions of the Grammy Award-winning band’s fans. Sony Music said it wanted to undertake a music launch on a scale that hadn’t been done before, and chose Wee Waa because it was a typical Australian small country town. The worldwide release date of the album co-incides with the Wee Waa Show, so the event will now be incorporated into the show.

Noisey hatte gestern das neue Album der Yeah Yeah Yeahs live gestreamt, jetzt gibt’s das komplette Ding inklusive Interview auf Youtube. Ich finde das Album nach dem ersten Hören ziemlich sensationell, wahrscheinlich ihr bestes seit dem Debüt „Fever to Tell“ und mit „Despair“ haben sie sogar ein halbes neues „Maps“ am Start. „I’ll suck your blood.“ Ich bin begeistert.

On the occasion of Beacon’s first LP The Ways We Separate, Brooklyn-based sculptor Fernando Mastrangelo has created a 13″x13″ cast sugar sculptural object that houses the vinyl and which simply reads in bold capital letters TWWS. The prototype was CNC milled in wood, which he then molded in silicone and finally cast in pure white sugar.

Ai Weiwei hat ein Metal-Album aufgenommen, das Teil erscheint in drei Wochen, wird online vertrieben und ist natürlich ein Fuckfinger an das chinesische Regime.

Two songs are about blind legal activist Chen Guangcheng, whose escape from house arrest last April and subsequent refuge in the U.S. Embassy embarrassed China and led to a diplomatic tussle. One song on the album is called “Hotel Americana”, a dig at the U.S. Embassy for sheltering Chen. Another is “Climbing over the Wall” – a reference to Chen’s scaling of the walls in his village to escape, and Chinese Internet users circumventing the “Great Firewall of China”, a colloquial term for China’s blocking of websites.

The mindmelting Making of John Mayers ‘Born & Raised’ Artwork
Ganz fantastische Minidoku über das Making Of des Covers von John Mayers „Born & Raised“-Album. Das Artwork kommt von David Adrian Smith, über dessen Schildermalerei ich schonmal vor zwei Jahren gebloggt hatte, ebenfalls ein kurzer Clip damals, wie dieser hier gefilmt von Danny Cooke. Kunsthandwerk in Vollendung. Ich sage das nicht oft, aber bitte schaut Euch den Clip hier in HD und Fullscreen an. Die Details in Typo und Illustration des Covers und der anderen Artworks sind absolut wahnsinnig und atemberaubend. Und schaut Euch das Ding unbedingt bis zum Ende an, Herr Smith hat für den Herrn Mayer auch ein paar Glasarbeiten gemacht, da ist mir grade das Hirn weggeschmolzen.

Iceage – You’re Nothing (Review)
Iceages Debut-Album „New Brigade“ hab’ ich vor zwei Jahren hier schwer abgefeiert. Damals spielten sie dreckigen Punkrock, 12 Songs in 24 Minuten voller Teenage Angst. Jetzt haben sie das „schwere“ zweite Album „You’re nothing“ am Start und es ist… besser. Die grade mal 22jährigen Rotzlöffel hauen hier erneut ihren düsteren Noisepunk um die Ohren, das Songwriting ist noch cleverer, der Sound noch druckvoller und unter der Oberfläche von alldem funkelt immer noch ein schwarzes Herz aus Pop.
Der Opener „Ecstasy“ mäandert geschickt zwischen schleppend gespielten Strophen, nur über in High-Speed Refrains in stakkatohaften „Pressure-Pressure“-Rufen zu landen. Ohne Pause prescht das Album durch „Coalition“, getrieben von „Excess-Excess“-Schreien und hochgestimmten Sonic Youth-Gitarren. „Interlude“ ist genau die kurze Atempause, die sie einem auf „New Brigade“ nicht gegönnt haben, nur um mit „Burning Hand“ dem Hörer die Lyrics förmlich ins Gesicht zu spucken. „In Haze“ ist für Iceage-Verhältnisse beinahe schon fast fröhlich, „Morals“ vereint Bright-Eyessche Rotwein-Verzweiflung mit zurückgemischten Gitarrenwänden.
Mit „Everything Drifts“ begibt sich das Album auf eine Zielgrade aus Gröhl-Rock („Wounded Hearts“), Speed-Punk („It might hit first“, „Rodfæstet“), um schließlich mit „Awake“ einen augenzwinkernden Bastard aus Pop-Punk und Noise-Hymne zu landen. Und zum Abschluss fassen sie ihr Album mit dem titelgebenden Song „You’re nothing“ nochmal zusammen.
„You’re nothing“ ist da erste Album der Band auf einem großen Label (Matador) und man hätte erwarten können, dass sie ihren dreckigen Sound aufpolieren und wenigstens ein bisschen mainstream-tauglicher machen. Haben sie nicht getan, sondern sie haben ihren Rotzpunk aufgebohrt, verfeinert, noch cleverer, noch druckvoller gemacht. Die wissen anscheinend ziemlich genau, was sie tun. Ein kaputtes, brillantes, wunderbares Album und von der Band erwarte ich demnächst nicht weniger als ein Dekade-formendes Meisterwerk. Yes, they are that good.

We Buy White Albums
Tolle Ausstellung/Installation von Rutherford Chang in der Recess Art Gallery, wo er einen Popup-Store aufgebaut hat, seine 693 White Albums von den Beatles zeigt und neue Erstpressungen in allen Zuständen kauft. Dazu spielt er jeden Tag die Alben, eins nach dem anderen, dokumentiert die Cover und am Ende will er alle dieser White-Alben-Plays übereinandermischen. Eine Kackophonie aus White Albums, oben die erste Seite des White Albums hundertmal übereinandergelegt. Mag ich, sehr. Aus einem Interview mit Dust & Grooves:
Q: Are you collecting as an artist or as a music fan?
A: I’m collecting them as cultural artifacts.
Q: Do you listen to vinyl records on regular basis?
A: I listen to the White Album every day.
Q: You play it every day, non- stop. What are you trying to achieve?
A: While at Recess, I’m listening to and recording the albums and documenting the covers. The albums I listen to get put up on the “staff picks” wall. At the end of the exhibition, I will press a new double-LP made from all the recordings layered upon each other. It will be like playing a few hundred copies of the White Album at once, each scratched and warped in its own way.
