New Daft Punk-Album this Spring
Es gab schon haufenweise Gerüchte, jetzt ist es offiziell: Das erste „richtige“ Daft Punk-Album seit 8 Jahren kommt in diesem Frühling. Der Sound der letzten Alben hat noch bis in die 10er Jahre gewirkt und tausende Nachahmer (JUSTICE, YACHT, Digitalism) gefunden, ich bin äußerst gespannt, ob und wie sehr sie am Sound für’s neue Album gedreht haben, vor allem in Hinblick auf die Zusammenarbeit mit Giorgio Moroder. Daft Punk have signed to Sony-owned Columbia and will release their fourth album this spring. The French dance duo, which consists of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, have left Virgin, with whom they signed in 1996.
The pair, who made a cameo in an episode of ‘The Simpsons’ last year, have been working with Chic’s Nile Rodgers, who previously hinted their fourth album would appear in 2013, as well as Oscar-winning songwriter Paul Williams and disco pioneer Giorgio Moroder. Animal Collective’s Panda Bear and Feist collaborator Chilly Gonzales are also rumoured to have collaborated with the Gallic duo.

FIDLAR: Fuck It, Dog, Life’s A Risk
Pitchfork hat einen Stream des nächste Woche erscheinenden, selbstbetitelten Debut-Albums von FIDLAR (Abkürzung für „Fuck It, Dog, Life’s A Risk“), ich hab’ mir die Platte meiner derzeitigen Lieblingspunks (neben Iceage) grade komplett angehört.
„Fuck It, Dog, Life’s A Risk“ ist toller, straighter Garage-Punk mit enormen Proll- und Gröhl-Faktor, die Songs sind dann aber eben auch eine ganze Ecke ausgefuchster und haben einen subtilen Classic-Rock Layer unter allem liegen. The Cramps meet Creedence Clearwater Revival, so ungefähr. Die Platte eröffnet mit dem Surf-Sound von „Cheap Beer“, das die angemessene Textzeile „I. Drink. Cheap. Beer. So. What. Fuck. You.“ enthält, was schonmal die Richtung vorgibt. Funpunk im Wortsinn, Garagerock meets The Hives ohne die Hysterie. Toll!
Auf Albumlänge sind FIDLAR allerdings leider nicht ganz die Rettung des Punk, die ich mir nach so sensationellen Tracks wie „No Waves“, „Wake Bake Skate“ oder den ebenso fantastischen Non-Album-Tracks „I just wanna die“, „AA“ oder „The Punks are finally taking Acid“ (grade „AA“ war ein ziemlicher Hit, was weiß ich, warum es das Teil nicht auf’s Album geschafft hat) erwartet hatte.
Wie auch immer, das Album ist dennoch eine unbedingte Empfehlung für jeden, der auf dringliche Gitarrenmucke aus dem Jahr 1976 steht. Hier ‘ne YT-Playlist mit einigen Videos, gefolgt von ein paar Links:

New Black Sabbath-Album in June
Ich hatte Ende 2011 schon die Re-Union von Black Sabbath gebloggt, jetzt hat die Band auf ihrer Website den Titel des neuen Albums und ein Release-Date bekanntgegeben. Wird ein heisser Sommer.
Today, the 13th of January 2013, rock legends BLACK SABBATH have announced the title of their new album, 13, which will be released this June (exact date TBA). The original BLACK SABBATH–OZZY OSBOURNE (vocals), TONY IOMMI (guitar) and GEEZER BUTLER (bass)–have recorded the album primarily in Los Angeles and were joined at the sessions by drummer Brad Wilk (Rage Against The Machine).
Produced by Rick Rubin (seven-time Grammy winner, two of those as Producer of the Year), the album will be released on Vertigo (worldwide) and Vertigo/Republic in the U.S. 13 marks the Grammy-winning, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees’ return to Vertigo, the band’s original label; it’s the group’s first studio album together since 1978’s Never Say Die! They have sold over 70 million albums together.

2011 beschloss die EU eine Schutzfristenverlängerung von 50 auf 70 Jahre, nach denen die Rechte an Werken gemeinfrei werden. Diese Fristen-Verlängerung greift allerdings nur dann, wenn die Werke innerhalb der letzten 50 Jahre veröffentlicht wurden, das heisst: Songs, die nach 1962 nicht mehr veröffentlicht wurden, sind laut dieser Regelung gemeinfrei (die Regelung greift erst ab 2014, aber prinzipiell wäre dass dann so).
Was macht man da also als Label, wenn die Arbeiten eines der bekanntesten Songwriters der Welt auf einmal in die Public Domain fallen könnten? Klare Sache, man veröffentlicht hastig schlampig zusammengestellte Compilations wie „Motown Unreleased 1962“ oder am unverschämtesten natürlich Sony mit Bob Dylans „The Copyright Extension Collection“, die hundert mal gepresst wurde und mittlerweile auf Ebay für mehr als 1000$ weggeht. Selbstverständlich alles zum Wohle des Künstlers.
In 2011 the European Union revised its copyright laws to extend copyright to 70 years. The change is not yet in effect but will be by 2014. And there’s a catch, a “use it or lose it” provision: recordings cannot benefit from the 20-year extension unless they were published before the 50-year term expired. The recordings on “The 50th Anniversary Collection” were about to fall over that legal precipice. […]
There was another concern. In Europe smaller labels have been releasing recordings that have gone out of copyright as public domain compilations — so-called gray market discs — including some by Mr. Dylan. Typically, these companies have not had access to master tapes but have released material that has already appeared on bootlegs, often in superb but not master quality. Sony hopes to fight those labels with this release and any sequels.

Insas GIF-ITTIs gehen regelmäßig durchs Netz, jetzt hat sie oder er Stanley Donwoods (der Mann, der die Radiohead-Artworks malt) Cover für das neue Album von Thom Yorkes Band Atoms for Peace auf das Büro von XL Records in Los Angeles gepinselt und daraus ein animiertes GIF gemacht.
Longtime Radiohead and Thom Yorke collaborator, Donwood, created the artwork for the Atoms For Peace album, a scene of armageddon in modern Los Angeles. This was interpreted by INSA as a piece of his patented GIF-ITI. INSA painted the Atoms For Peace artwork on to the XL office in Los Angeles a number of times, each a different frame of animation, to create a real life GIF. […]
INSA on the GIF: “My challenge was to take two very static items, a beautiful lino-cut and a less beautiful box of a building, and bring them to life. After a week of sweating in the Los Angeles late summer sun re-painting the whole building several times i got there. Animated as a continuous GIF it may only live online but some would argue that is where most now live their lives…”

Death Grips leak new Album NØ LØV∑ D∑∑P W∏B
Die Death Grips machen heute ein bisschen Wind und haben ihr eigentlich am 20. Oktober erscheinendes Album „NØ LØV∑ D∑∑P W∏B“ ins Internet geleakt, Anlass ist wohl Stunk mit ihrem Label Epic/Sony (Tweets von vergangener Nacht: „The label wouldn’t confirm a release date for NO LOVE DEEP WEB “till next year sometime“ @ und „The label will be hearing the album for the first time with you“ @). Das Album wurde jetzt vor ein paar Minuten auf Soundcloud, Bayfiles, als Youtube-Playlist und auf ihrer Seite (ZIP, Download läuft grade extrem langsam) und auf Archive.org online gestellt.
Außerdem hatten sie im Vorfeld zum Release des neuen Albums ein ziemlich abgefahrenes Alternate Reality Game im Tor-Network und auf 4Chan durchgezogen, Details dazu stehen auf Oddfuturetalk. Und: Ihre Website ziert derzeit (wenn sie erreichbar ist) eine Makroaufnahme eines Penis, auf dem sie mit Edding den Titel des Albums geschrieben haben. Die sind wahnsinnig. Toll!

DJ Food und Kollegen von Ninja Tune haben Beastie Boys’ „Pauls Boutique“ rekonstruiert, aus den Original-Samples, Demos und Interviews. Der Mix für die Solid Steel Radioshow ist seit drei Jahren in Arbeit, die Tracklist umfasst nicht weniger als 167 Songs und Soundbits. In der Soundcloud gibt’s die einstündige Variante ohne die anderen Items aus der Show, auf Mixcloud gibt’s die kompletten zwei Stunden mit zusätzlichen Mixen von Coldcut und PC. Obendrauf kommt ‘ne Cover-Illu von Comiczeichner Jim „Food One“ Mahfood (Tank Girl, Kevin Smiths Clerks, Marvel). Über die unglaublich großartige Großartigkeit von all dem hier muss ich wohl keine weiteren Worte verlieren, oder vielleicht doch, eins: WHOA!
3 years in the making, 3 DJs working with over 150 tracks to recreate one of the seminal sampling albums of all time, at last Cheeba, Moneyshot and I can reveal ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’. Our tribute to the classic Beastie Boys album ‘Paul’s Boutique’ remixed and re-imagined from all the original samples plus a cappellas, period interviews and the Beasties’ own audio commentary from the reissued release.
Add to this a custom illustration from Paul’s Boutique super-fan and all-round great guy Jim Mahfood, taking time out from recent art duties on Tank Girl, and you have an alternate version of the album. The mix was over half way finished when we heard the tragic news of Adam Yauch‘s passing this May so this is also our nod to his memory, RIP MCA.

Making Of The Darkness’ Hot Cakes-Cover
Diego Gravinese hat einige Behind The Scenes-Shots zum Making Of des Covers des neuen The Darkness-Albums online gestellt. Lecker Mädchen in Ahornsirup und goldenen Bikinis auf riesigen Pfannkuchen. Ihr wisst schon. Hier ein Interview mit Creative Director Rob Chenery und ein paar der Bilder, hier der Flickr-Stream von Diego Gravinese, der aus dem Fotoshooting eins seiner Gemälde machte und hier ‘ne Flickr-Galerie von yours truly, weil Gravinese seine Bilder nicht wirklich sortiert. Die Platte wäre natürlich auch ohne Ahornsirup und Goldbikinis absolute Pflicht für mich.
Could you please give us a brief description of the creative and execution process? And, was the band involved throughout it?
Tourist put forward style boards for various props including gold bikinis, sunglasses, etc., the look of the models from magazine reference as well as how we wanted the syrup to drip off the pancakes. We sent all the style books to the band to approve before the shoot commenced. The band’s brief was to create ‘an unapologetically mainstream 70’s porn, kitsch Linda Lovelace vs Raquel Welch vibe’ with big, bold retro looking typography.
Trying to find a 3D modelling company in London to build three giant 8-foot pancakes within the budget was impossible, so we had everything created in Argentina for the shoot.
Diego was let loose to transform it into a retro looking piece of art after a considerable amount of retouching on the final photo to get the syrup looking just right. The album is out on CD Deluxe and gatefold LP mushroom vinyl on August 20.

Ich habe Blur erst sehr spät entdeckt und war während der Britpop-Wars Anhänger von Oasis. Dann hat mir Damon Albarn mit „Tender“ das Leben gerettet, als ich hoffnungslos an gebrochenen Herzen litt und alles Schwarz und vorbei war. Come on, get through it. Love’s the greatest thing! Da kaufte ich alle Blur-Alben rückwärts und erkannte, so ungefähr als Oasis mit „Standing on the Shoulder of Giants“ ihre Karriere endgültig absägten, die Großartigkeit von Damon Albarn und Graham Coxon und der Band Blur. Mein Lieblingssong ist übrigens immer noch Country House, erwähnte ich bereits, dass ich mir die Box selbst unter den Nagel reißen würden, wenn ich könnte und so drauf wäre? Blur-Oasis-Fightclub-Comments, haut rein!

Never Mind The Bollocks 35th Anniversary Box Set
Am 24. September erscheint zum 35sten Jubiläum des Albums ein Box Set zur wahrscheinlich wichtigsten Platte des Punk: Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols (hier komplett auf Youtube). Drei CDs und eine DVD mit allen möglichen Raritäten und überhaupt. Now I got a Reason to be waitin’.
The original master tapes from the ‘Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols’ recording sessions in 1977 were thought to be lost for many years. Now thankfully rediscovered during the recent move from Virgin Records to Universal Music Catalogue in January 2012 the tapes have been remastered, for the very first time, by Tim Young under direction from original producer Chris Thomas. Some real treats have also been found along the way. The find that will perhaps excite fans the most is the lost 1977 demo studio recording of ‘Belsen Was A Gas’, the only original Sex Pistols composition of the era thought not to be recorded.
Other treats include the inclusion of six demos first included on the infamous ‘Spunk’ bootleg album, released for the very first time in their original, untouched form following the very recent discovery of their original master tapes. These, combined with a selection of unreleased Chris Thomas demo’s and outtakes from the recording of the album – including tracks with Sid Vicious on bass- plus a wealth of live audio and visual material all from 1977 make up a box set that will truly satisfy fans of the band.

Before Alex appears we can see two albums in the racks, Livin’ the Blues by Canned Heat and The Time is Near… by the Keef Hartley Band.
When Alex wanders in he passes a large rack of albums, some of which elude my occasionally sketchy knowledge of 70s’ rock. I can recognise these: 1) U by The Incredible String Band, 2) Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd, 3) As Your Mind Flies By by Rare Bird, 4) Get Ready by Rare Earth and 5), the one that started it all, Lorca by Tim Buckley.
Alex passes a booth stacked with magazines and newspapers. The one at the lower right is a popular film magazine of the time, Films and Filming.
He passes the other side of the magazine booth, selects a magazine and leafs through it while he walks. I’d never paid much attention to this before until I was stepping through the scene again and recognised the cover as a copy of Cinema X (The International Guide for Adult Audiences), an exploitation mag that existed solely to show people stills of nude scenes in current films. This is Kubrick’s first joke since Cinema X is exactly the kind of title that would attract Alex’s attention even though he discards it a few moments later.
