Da warte ich schon die ganze Zeit drauf: Amanda Palmers Talk auf der TED-Konferenz vor ein paar Tagen, in dem sie ihre Kickstarter-Story und die Geschichte mit dem Shitstorm, den sie ausgelöst hatte, erzählt, grade online gegangen.

Ihren Vortrag hatte AFP vorher auf Zweimeterfuffzich mit Edding (Sharpies sind sowas wie Eddings, oder?) aufgemalt: „i drew my #TED2013 talk out in sharpie. it is about eight feet long. i am taking this as a good omen.“
Amanda Fucking Palmers kickstarted Album
Amanda Fucking Palmer finanziert ihr neues Album (und ein Kunstbuch und ne Tour) selbstverständlich über Kickstarter, seit sie vor vier Jahren ihrem Plattenlabel den Stinkefinger zeigte (hier ihr Song “Please Drop Me”, das ihrem Ex-Label gewidmet ist). Die Kickstarter-Seite ging heute morgen online und ist zu diesem Zeitpunkt zu 169% finanziert, innerhalb von sechs Stunden. Das hier ist die (oder besser: eine) Zukunft des Music-Biz, denn wenn man die Platte per Crowdfunding quasi vorverkauft, kann mir die Piratenbucht am Arsch vorbeigehen und ich kann sie nach Finanzierung und Produktion immer noch traditionell verkaufen, hab’ dann aber bereits meinen Profit abgeschöpft. The details of what she’s offering are, as you might expect, quite interesting as well. All too often, it feels like people seem to think that all you have to do is “put it on Kickstarter.” And, sometimes that can work, but it helps to have cool options. Amanda’s offering has a lot of cool goodies and opportunities (including live events) for backers, allowing them to self-select in to how they’d like to support her. A lot of the offering is vinyl focused, which isn’t that surprising, given the renewed popularity of vinyl these days, but also the ability to do more artistic work in combination with a vinyl release. Of course, not everyone has a record player… but they’ve got that covered. At some of the higher level packages, they’ll include a USB-enabled Crosley turntable which they’ll custom-paint for you, making it awesome.

Like Radiohead did recently, this group will show how recording and release schedules are no longer bound by distribution challenges.

Amanda Palmer covers Radiohead on a Ukulele
Amanda Palmer hat ein Mini-Album mit Radiohead-Songs aufgenommen, die sie auf einer Ukulele covert, inklusive Idioteque, das auf einer Uke ziemlich interessant klingt. Das Ding gibt’s für nichtmal einen Dollar auf ihrer Website.
The kitschily-covered album, appropriately titled Amanda Palmer Performs The Popular Hits Of Radiohead On Her Magical Ukelele (phew), is, again, supposed to be officially released for order and digital download tomorrow, but if you are super-nerdy and follow her blog (like me) or receive her newsletter (ahem…also like me), then you can download today! The base price she is charging is 84 cents. Yes, this seems incredibly random, but 54 of these cents will go to Radiohead, as is only fair, and the rest will go to Paypal for fees. If you choose to pay more, which I truly recommend, the extra will then go to Amanda Fucking Palmer herself.

Some of the best parts of this experience are nowhere on the video… like the wonderful expressions and reactions on people’s faces that the camera didn’t catch. The guy in Union Square who bear-hugged me spontaneously was one of my favorites. Only in New York could you do something like this and be either ignored or celebrated. Anywhere else on the planet they’d be calling the men in little white coats. And the cops I followed and sang to didn’t even blink an eye. What nice cops!

Amanda Palmer hat Fans per Twitter und Blog zu einem spontanen Gig am Strand von Los Angeles eingeladen und weil das Wetter so toll war, haben sie gleich ein spontanes Low Budget-Musikvideo zu einem Cat Stevens-Song gedreht. Und nachdem ich mir das angesehen habe, frage ich mich, ob das nicht die Zukunft des Musikbiz war, die ich da grade gesehen habe. Vielleicht ist die Zeit teurer Produktionen und Musikvideos ganz einfach genauso vorbei, wie die Zeit der Prunkbauten der Aristokraten und der Gigantomanie im kommunistischen Russland.
Es gibt eine Theorie in der Evolutionslehre, laut der Spezies, die vom Aussterben bedroht sind, zum Riesenwuchs neigen. Die größten Dinosaurier, die jemals die Erde bevölkerten, waren auch die letzten Saurierarten. Und vielleicht sind die zu den Four Big zusammengewachsenen Majorlabel nichts weiter als gigantische Saurier, vom Aussterben bedroht, während die Säugetiere bereits jetzt zwischen deren Zehen herumwuseln und mit Twitter und billigen Flashmobvideos autonom Geld verdienen. Vielleicht liege ich aber auch völlig daneben, aber in meinem romantischen Kopf fühlt sich das ganz gut an.
