A utility company is trying to reunite nine people with their false teeth in time for Christmas. The dentures were all recovered from Severn Trent’s sewage treatment works in Monkmoor, Shrewsbury. The teeth are thought to have been flushed down toilets or dropped down plug-holes.

Heart-Sculpture made from human skin
GV Art in London zeigt momentan Ausstellung „Trauma“, Themen sind unter anderem der Zerfall des Gehirns eines Alzheimer-Patienten, der HI-Virus oder die Mutationen in der Botanik um Tschernobyl. Und dann haben sie noch Andrew Krasnows Skulptur eines Herzens aus menschlicher Haut.
Andrew Krasnow’s Hollow Muscle is a sculpture of a heart made out of human skin. He was inspired by the fact that his father suffered three major heart attacks. As a child in the 1960s, the artist would place his head on his father’s chest that was criss-crossed with scars. There are also lithograph prints of the piece on show.

A History of Drilling Holes in your head
Das Journal of Neurosurgery hat eine Artikelserie über Schädel-Deformationen und darunter findet sich einer über die Geschichte der modernen Trepanation, „die operative Öffnung des Schädels, entweder um operative Eingriffe im Schädelinnern vorzunehmen oder auch zur Senkung des Schädelinnendrucks, des Hirndrucks (Wikipedia).“ Unbedingt lesen, perfekte Montagslektüre!
The history of the International Trepanation Advocacy Group can be traced back to a Dutch medical student and admitted polysubstance abuser named Bart Huges, who was ultimately denied his medical degree by the University of Amsterdam at least in part for his vocal advocacy of marijuana use. During one particular episode in the early 1960s while under the influence of recreational psychoactive drugs, Huges came to believe that drilling a hole in one’s head would allow blood to more freely pulse around the brain, reproducing the state of an infant’s brain prior to closure of the cranial sutures. He was aware that by adulthood, the brain is denied an elastic bony covering against which to expand; in addition, he proposed that gravity gradually robbed the brain of some of its blood volume.
Trepanation, as his theory went, had the potential to reverse both of these processes. Huges felt that prolonged standing on one’s head could yield the same result, albeit temporarily, but only with trepanation could a long-term so-called “permanent high” be attained. He eventually delineated his ideas in a 1962 monograph alternately entitled either Homo Sapiens Correctus, named for what he believed would describe a new species of humans with holes in their skulls, or The Mechanism of Brainbloodvolume (BBV). He later also authored the book, Trepanation: the Cure for Psychosis, and an autobiography, The Book With the Hole. Although never finishing medical school, he did in 1965 successfully self-trepan, and, based on what he felt was an excellent benefit from this procedure, later convinced others to do the same.

Man grows new Fingertip on Stomach
Als in China ein Mann ins Krankenhaus eingeliefert wurde, der sich eine Fingerspitze bei einem Unfall abgesägt hatte, fackelten die Ärzte aus Zeitmangel nicht lange und vernähten die Wunde, wo oben der Knochen rausguckte, mit seinem Bauch, um die Blutzirkulation im Finger aufrecht zu erhalten. Die OP war ein Erfolgt und in einem Monat hat der Mann seinen Finger, wenn sie ihm das Teil aus seiner Plauze gepuhlt haben. Schönen guten Morgen!
Furniture worker Wang Yongjun, 20, cut off the end of his middle finger with an electric saw in an accident at work. Wang, of Liaoyang, Liaoning Province, was rushed to hospital where doctors had to think fast. Dr Huang Xuesong said the muscle and skin had been cut away from the end of his finger leaving only the bone showing. “We had to make a quick decision or he could have lost his finger. We decided to cultivate a new fingertip on his stomach,” he said.
Doctors operated and attached Wang’s finger to his stomach in the hope that new skin and muscle would grow around it. Dr Huang said the technique was a way of restoring blood circulation to the injured finger so that the body could repair itself. He says the surgery was a complete success and that Wang would have a brand new fingertip – separated from his stomach – within a month.

Body Farm Minidoku
Motherboard haben eine 2009er Minidoku über die Bodyfarm ausgegraben. Ich bin mir grade nicht sicher, ob ich die damals nicht schon hier hatte, bin jetzt aber auch zu faul, um nachzusehen. Die Bodyfarm ist ein Gelände in Tennessee, auf dem Leichen rumliegen und verfaulen und an denen Forensiker herumwissenschaftlern und den Nachwuchs ausbilden.
Bass founded UTK’s Forensic Anthropology Center in 1971 to, in part, help train students in body identification and outdoor forensic investigative techniques.
As part of the curricula, Bass started The Body Farm, an open-air lab on a hectare-sized plot of woods. A lab where donated bodies are dropped to experience various weather and environmental conditions so researchers can study how quickly those bodies decompose. It’s important research for criminal investigators whose time-of-death calculations are critical. As gross and macabre as it sounds, there really aren’t any other study options that provide reliable, real-world data.
Bass talked with us about his history developing some of the earliest methods of forensic anthropology and asking the dean of UTK for land to let dead bodies rot on (for science, of course). It’s an illuminating chat about the world of forensic science mixed in with numerous anecdotes about old murder cases from Bass himself as he tours us around the bone-scattered Body Farm. We will offer a warning: the footage and archival photos can get grisly. But don’t be scared, it’s only science!

How-To make tasty Specimen in a Jar

1. What good is a specimen jar if you can’t serve it at dinner? The contents of the jars should be genuinely edible, made out of real food. Plastic snakes and spiders are right out.
2. Make it tasty. While the appearance of the specimen jars may cause loss of appetite, the scent, by contrast, should be simply mouth watering. There are many ways to get there. Specimen jars can be prepared as an antipasto course (e.g., with preserved vegetables), as a soup appetizer, as a palate cleanser between courses, or a dessert course, depending on the ingredients chosen.
3. Work within the comfort zone of your guests. If your guests are super-omnivores, eager to eat the most challenging ingredients that you can get your hands on– whether that’s brains or balut or something far worse –then go right ahead. However, the point of this project is to make a dish that looks intimidating but actually consists of friendly ingredients. It’s possible to make a truly scary looking set of specimen jars that is (for example) strictly vegan or passes the even stricter dietary requirements that your child may present.
