Ich hab’ mir grade zum Wachwerden Mike Mignolas Cartoon-Umsetzung seines Comics „The Amazing Screw-On-Head“ angesehen, in dem ein Roboterkopf als Agent Abraham Lincolns Jagd auf einen Emperor Zombie macht. Der Pilot wurde 2006 auf dem SciFi-Channel ausgestrahlt, die Serie wurde aber nie produziert. Voiceactors sind unter anderem Patton Oswalt und Paul Giamatti. Screw-On Head is an agent for President Abraham Lincoln. He is summoned by Lincoln to track down Emperor Zombie, an undead occultist and originally a groundskeeper at Hyde Park. Zombie and his henchmen, the vampire Madam and scientist Dr. Snap, have stolen an ancient manuscript. This will allow him access to the temple of Gung, a warlord who nearly conquered the world over ten thousand years ago with supernatural power gained from “a fabulous melon-sized jewel”, which Zombie obviously plans to use for himself.

First animated Version of The Hobbit rediscovered
Vor ein paar Tagen ist auf Youtube die erste animierte Version von Tolkiens The Hobbit aufgetaucht, geschrieben von Gene Deitch, produziert von Bill Snyder (Tom & Jerry, Popeye). Das Ding wurde innerhalb eines Monats fertiggestellt, nachdem die beiden ein paar Jahre an einem abendfüllenden Spielfilm arbeiteten. Als schließlich die Rechte zum Buch drohten, an die Tolkien Foundation zurückzufallen, haben sie schnell den Film oben zusammengedengelt. Als Film eher okayish, als Zeitdokument aber sehr bemerkenswert.
A long-lost version of The Hobbit by animation legend Gene Deitch has resurfaced online in the past few days. Why did Gene produce this 12-minute “animatic” version instead of the feature-length version he’d originally planned with Jiří Trnka? Why did he have just one month to produce it? Why has nobody ever seen it? The crazy circumstances that led to the production are revealed in this piece that Gene wrote on his website. In short, the film was a financial ploy by Deitch’s producer William L. Snyder to earn himself a nice chunk of change. Deitch writes:
The Tolkien estate had now been offered a fabulous sum for the rights, and [William] Snyder’s rights would expire in one month. They were already rubbing their hands together. But Snyder played his ace: to fulfill just the letter of the contract – to deliver a “full-color film” of THE HOBBIT by June 30th. All he had to do was to order me to destroy my own screenplay – all my previous year’s work, and hoke up a super-condensed scenario on the order of a movie preview, (but still tell the entire basic story from beginning to end), and all within 12 minutes running time – one 35mm reel of film. Cheap. I had to get the artwork done, record voice and music, shoot it, edit it, and get it to a New York projection room on or before June 30th, 1966! I should have told him to shove it, but I was basically his slave at the time. It suddenly became an insane challenge.

One Millionth Tower uses some tricks beyond Popcorn (like WebGL for some 3D elements), but most of its coolest effects — like the way the environment in the film changes based on the real-time weather conditions and time of day at the Toronto high-rises where the documentary was filmed — are all courtesy of Popcorn.
If it happens to be snowing in Toronto when you watch the film, it will begin snowing in the virtual world of One Millionth Tower.

Happy 110th, Disney & Heisenberg!
Heute wären Walt Disney und Werner Heisenberg 110 Jahre alt geworden. Der eine hat Micky Mouse und Donald Duck erfunden, der andere die Unschärferelation. Beide haben 1932 etwas gewonnen: Disney zwei Oscars (einen Ehrenoscar für Micky Mouse und einen für den ersten Farb-Trickfilm Flowers and Trees), der andere den Nobelpreis für Physik für seine Beiträge zur Quantenmechanik. Und ich kann mich nicht entscheiden, welcher von beiden wichtiger war für den Fortschritt der Menschheit, tendiere aber zu Disney.

Cyriaks Animationen feiere ich hier auf NC jetzt auch schon seit 5 Jahren, oben eine der ersten die ich hier hatte und grade habe ich das erste Interview auf Fast Company mit dem Mann gelesen. Leider befragen sie ihn nur oberflächlich zu seinen Wurzeln, genau da hätte ich gerne mehr drüber gewusst. Aber was willste von einem Magazin mit „Company“ im Titel auch schon erwarten.

Terry Gilliam has certainly played a large part, but I would also mention artists like Jan Svankmajer, Raoul Servais, and Zbig Rybczynski. The animations that most inspired me growing up were obscure artistic films that were usually shown late at night.

R.I.P. Zdeněk Miler

Zdeněk Miler ist gestern im Alter von 90 Jahren gestorben. Miler kennt Ihr, er hat den kleinen Maulwurf erfunden, mit dem verbindet mich eine kleine, sehr persönliche Anekdote und die geht so:
Ich war noch sehr, sehr klein, garantiert im Vorschulalter, ich tippe mal auf 3 oder 4 Jahre alt. Damals besuchten wir recht oft Onkel Karl und Tante Irmgard in ihrem Schrebergarten, die waren da jedes Wochenende und manchmal, im Sommer, da war die ganze Schrebergartenanlage mit Lampions und bunten Lichtern geschmückt und man feierte ein kleines Fest. Da war ich ein paar mal und eines Abends, als ich an der Hand meiner Eltern den bunt leuchtenden Gang entlangging, hatte ich auf einmal die ganz klare Erinnerung daran, dass ich genau an dieser Stelle mit den Lampions einmal einen Stern gefunden hatte, der vom Himmel gefallen war. Ich erinnere mich, als wär’s gestern gewesen.
Der Stern war klein, ungefähr so groß wie meine Kinderhand, schimmerte in einem bleichen, gelblichen Licht und hatte fünf Zacken und ich freute mich wie bolle, dass ich echt einen Stern gefunden hatte. Aufgeregt erzählte ich meinen Eltern davon, dass das genau an dieser Stelle war, wo an diesem Abend die Lampions leuchteten und die schmunzelten und lachten und sagten mir, dass das gar nicht ginge, weil Sterne nicht vom Himmel fallen würden. Ich war ein bisschen enttäuscht, aber es erklärte, warum ich den Stern nie wieder gesehen hatte, nachdem ich ihn aufsammelte.
Heute weiß ich: Ich hatte damals die obige Folge „Der kleine Maulwurf und der grüne Stern“ gesehen, davon geträumt und als wir auf diesem Sommerfest im Schrebergarten von Onkel Karl und Tante Irmgard waren, hatte ich mein erstes Déjà vu. Gute Nacht, Herr Miler. Du hast mir einen Stern geschenkt.
