Klari Reis macht wieder Bakterien-Malerei in Petrischalen. 2009 hat sie das schonmal über ein ganzes Jahr lang durchgezogen, hier die 2013er Version.
Artist Klari Reis uses reflective epoxy polymer to depict microscopic images. The effect is hopeful, almost playful, belying the serious nature of the subject matter.
Supported by steel rods, the paintings sit at varying degrees of distance from the wall, evoking depth and motion. Working with biotech companies in San Francisco, Klari uses organic cellular imagery and natural reactionship with today’s biotechnological industry.

Schöne Arbeit von Addie Wagenknecht und Pablo Garcia vom FAT-Lab, ein Experiment in Fine Art und Porno, Kunstklassiker von Sexcam-Performern nachgestellt. Toll, mag ich sehr gerne.
If asked if there is a difference between the Renaissance painting The Birth of Venus (1486) and a Playboy centerfold, most might say it’s no contest: one is art and the other pornography. One is of human ideals, the other smut. Are Botticelli and Hugh Hefner really that different? Both project fantasy and erotic imagery through the media of their day. Both are vehicles of gender politics, defining standards of beauty and sexuality. What if adult performers—already mediated sex objects—struck “classic” poses? In Webcam Venus, we asked online sexcam performers to replicate iconic works of art. This piece is an experimental homage to both fine art and the lowbrow internet phenomenon of cams.
Sexcams use webcams and chat interfaces to connect amateur adult performers with an audience. Users log on to see men, women, transsexuals, couples and groups broadcast their bodies and sexuality live for the public, often performing for money. To create this experiment in high and low brow media, we assumed anonymous handles and spent a few hours each day for a month asking performers: “Would you like to pose for me?”
Guerilla Renovierung in München
Goldgrund Immobilien hat zusammen mit der Band Moop Mama hat eine Wohnung in einem zum Abriss vorgesehen Gebäude in München eine Wohnung renoviert und errechnet, dass das Gebäude zu einem Bruchteil der Kosten eines Neubaus erhalten bleiben könnte, inklusive billigem Wohnraum, der grade in München Mangelware ist. Sehr schöne Aktion, sehr unterstützenswert.

Die Gebäude auf dem Gelände Müllerstraße 2-6 sollen abgerissen werden, darunter das Eckhaus Müllerstraße 6, eines der wenigen erhaltenen Beispiele stilechter 50er-Jahre Architektur und städtebaulicher Fixpunkt an der Kreuzung Corneliusstraße.
Die Stadt München möchte an dieser Stelle neue Wohnungen bauen. Die Kosten für den Neubau wurden im vergangenen Jahr von der Stadt recht vorsichtig mit 5,2 Millionen Euro beziffert. Planung, Grundstücksfreimachung, Abbruch, Außenanlagen, Ausstattung sind hier noch nicht eingerechnet, so dass das ganze Projekt nach sachverständiger Einschätzung mit mindestens 7 Millionen Euro zu Buche schlagen wird. Das Kommunalreferat sagt, eine Erhaltung des Gebäudes sei „nur mit ganz erheblichem Kostenmehraufwand” möglich.
Das glauben wir nicht. Wir von der “Goldgrund Family”, engagierte Bürgerinnen und Bürger aus dem Stadtviertel, glauben, dass die Stadt einen Großteil dieses Geldes sparen könnte, indem sie das bestehende Haus einfach renoviert und erhält. Die Gebäude sind nach Aussagen von Architekten keineswegs abbruchreif. Eine zeitgemäße Sanierung würde einen Bruchteil eines Neubaus kosten. Es ensteht zwar etwas weniger Wohnfläche, dafür aber kurzfristig und billig.
Wir haben schonmal damit angefangen und in den vergangenen Tagen eine der Wohnungen grundsaniert: neues Parkett, neue Küche, neues Bad, und ansonsten einmal schönmachen. Das Ergebnis: eine “Goldgrund-sanierte” Wohnung, nach der sich zehntausende Münchner Wohnungssuchende die Finger lecken würden…
Das Ganze hat einen Bruchteil des Neubaus gekostet. Diese wurden in diesem Fall von uns getragen.
Die Kosten der Modernisierung des gesamten Komplexes würden, nach unserer Einschätzung, maximal ein Fünftel des Neubaus betragen.

Hello World: Documentary about creative Coding
Hello World!: Tolle Doku-Serie von Ultra Labs aus Spanien über Creative Coding und generative Kunst. Der erste Teil ist grade online gegangen, geht um Processing. WMMNA hatte vor kurzem ein Interview mit den Machern:
How is the documentary series structured? Each episode corresponding to a different theme? Or a different tool? Or moment in the development of the open languages?
The series plan consists of three chapters, each of them dealing with different aspects of this confluence of creation and coding. Each chapter takes a concrete tool and its community to deploy a particular theme. The chapter Hello World! Processing we are now premiering, for example, tackles with the specificities of taking code and programming as a medium or creative strategy: what’s the role, then, and the interest of algorithms, data and parameters? What is being explored through them? We are not diving into the questions around interaction, for example, that’s something we want to handle in the Open Frameworks chapter. Nor time, perception and attention concerns, which we’ll explore in the Pure Data one.
Of course, we don’t mean those languages are meant specifically for these proposed domains; we decided to articulate the series around concrete tools to highlight their importance as singular cultural devices.

The Printed Internet: Daniel druckt Websites aus, schneidet sie aus und klebt sie mit eigenen Texten zu Collagen wieder zusammen, so wie wir früher immer mit Kleber und Schere Zeitungsseiten gelayoutet haben. Ein surrealer Papier-Layout-Remix des Internets. Ich glaube (wirklich), das hier ist das grandioseste Tumblr aller Zeiten. Ganz, ganz großartig, ich bin extrem begeistert, den Feed hab’ ich mir umgehend in den Reader gepackt, leider noch viel zu wenig davon am Start! Inside Ron Muecks Studio
Ron Mueck hatte zunächst für Jim Henson als Puppenspieler in der Sesamstraße und der Muppet Show gearbeitet, war maßgeblich an den Effekten von Hensons Labyrinth beteiligt und verlieh Ludo seine Stimme. Seit Mitte der 90er macht der Mann Kunst in Form von gigantischen, lebensechten Skulpturen von Menschen. Von April bis September hat er nun eine Ausstellung in Paris am Start, für die ihn Fotograf Gautier Deblonde in seinem Londoner Studio abgelichtet hat, ein paar mehr Bilder gibt’s bei Designboom.

Niklas schreibt mir: „Ein Plotter aus Pappe! Nicht mehr und nicht weniger. Habe ich letzte Woche gebaut, als ich einen Karton/Computer Workshop an der HfG in Offenbach geleitet habe. This plotter is made entirely out of cardboard, welding rod, rubber bands, adhesive tape and super glue. The digital memory is a little book with plenty of different drawing codes, which are written down as coordinates. In this video I’m entering the first code, which makes the plotter draw “hello world”.

Masterclock: The core part of any digital computer is a clock which synchronizes all logic processes and communications. Tilmann Aechtner built this beautiful time piece. It uses rolls of adhesive tape as weight. On a connected barrel display, you can watch the mechanism counting.
Mr. NAND: Carolin Liebl and Lisa Hopf were interested in fundamental digital logic: Over several design iterations, they managed to build a very clever and well working NAND gate. It compares two binary inputs and calculates one binary output. Several of those mechanical gates in combination can be used to build a complete computer! Although a working computer out of cardboard would probably become a bit large. […]
Arbeit („Labor“): A cardboard computer is not much worth without an appropriate data storage device. Philipp Medrala was fascinated by punch card technology and decided to build his own crank operated punch card reader!

Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch von 1896, visualized in Meatspace
Schöne Arbeit von Oliver Bieh-Zimmert, der das Bürgerliche Gesetzbuch in der ursprünglichen Fassung von 1896 visualisiert und aufeinander Bezug nehmende Paragraphen mit Fäden verbunden hat. Ergebnis ist eine physische Visualisierung eines Gesetzgebungs-Netzwerks aus dem 19. Jahrhundert. Toll!
A hand-made visualization was done to connect 2385 paragraphs of the German Civil Code by 1896. Every paragraph contains a number of references to other paragraphs. In the physical visualization each reference was visualized through red threads. After a lot of hours worked the overall structure of the law is visible. What you can see are local clusters of references between the paragraphs and if you take a few steps back you can see patterns through the symmetry.

Tolle Ausstellung/Installation von Rutherford Chang in der Recess Art Gallery, wo er einen Popup-Store aufgebaut hat, seine 693 White Albums von den Beatles zeigt und neue Erstpressungen in allen Zuständen kauft. Dazu spielt er jeden Tag die Alben, eins nach dem anderen, dokumentiert die Cover und am Ende will er alle dieser White-Alben-Plays übereinandermischen. Eine Kackophonie aus White Albums, oben die erste Seite des White Albums hundertmal übereinandergelegt. Mag ich, sehr. Aus einem Interview mit Dust & Grooves:
Q: Are you collecting as an artist or as a music fan?
A: I’m collecting them as cultural artifacts.
Q: Do you listen to vinyl records on regular basis?
A: I listen to the White Album every day.
Q: You play it every day, non- stop. What are you trying to achieve?
A: While at Recess, I’m listening to and recording the albums and documenting the covers. The albums I listen to get put up on the “staff picks” wall. At the end of the exhibition, I will press a new double-LP made from all the recordings layered upon each other. It will be like playing a few hundred copies of the White Album at once, each scratched and warped in its own way.

Superspannende neue Arbeit von Paolo Cirio (Google Will Eat Itself, Ghosts of Streetview, Face 2 Facebook), der angeblich die Datenbank der Unternehmensregistratur der Kaimaninseln gehackt hat und auf der Website Loophole4all.com quasi Steuernummern der Unternehmen zwecks Corporate Identity Theft für ‘nen Dollar pro Stück anbietet. Wenn das alles so stimmt, ist das selbst für einen Künstler wie Cirio, der die Grenzen der Legalität für seine Arbeiten gerne mal dehnt, ein ziemlicher Hammer.
Obendrauf dokumentiert er auf der Seite zum Projekt in mehreren Interview mit Steuerflucht-Fuzzis Hintergrundinfos zum Thema, unter anderem mit so tollen Sätzen wie: „Figures show that, in 2010, Barbados, Bermuda and the British Virgin Islands received more foreign direct investment than Germany or Japan“. Grandiose Aktion, die hoffentlich ohne Folgen für den Mann bleibt.
Offshore centers are considered legal abroad. However, the services that they provide are unaffordable for the normal citizens onshore, whose instead have to pay more taxes and legal obligations, while facing cuts to public services and increasing national debt.
Loophole for All democratizes the use of offshore centers. It provides a service to the middle class and small businesses who don’t want to pay more taxes than they should.
The service of Loophole for All acquires the lists of companies incorporated in the offshore centers and armed with as little as a company name and a number, lets people hijack those companies and utilize them for public advantage.
This corporate identity theft benefits from the anonymous nature of those offshore companies. Everyone can pretend to be them because of their real owners’ secrecy. And even if it’s illegal to steal an identity of a company, the courts of offshoring centers don’t have any power or credibility onshore. And meanwhile, onshore authorities don’t have the resources to verify the real owners of companies offshore — even less to chase everybody down.

Finding Vivian Maier – Doku-Trailer

Toller Trailer zur kommenden Doku über Vivian Maier, die in den 50ern und 60ern bis in die 90er Jahre hunderttausende Fotografien auf den Straßen von New York anfertigte und die sie nie veröffentlichte. Zufällig stieß Historiker John Maloof auf die Negative und entdeckte damit nichts weniger als einen Schatz. Die ganze Story steht hier, Snip von der Website zum Film:
Taking snapshots into the late 1990′s, Maier would leave behind a body of work comprising over 100,000 negatives. Additionally Vivian’s passion for documenting extended to a series of homemade documentary films and audio recordings. Interesting bits of Americana, the demolition of historic landmarks for new development, the unseen lives of ethnics and the destitute, as well as some of Chicago’s most cherished sites were all meticulously catalogued by Vivian Maier.
A free spirit but also a proud soul, Vivian became poor and was ultimately saved by three of the children she had nannied earlier in her life. Fondly remembering Maier as a second mother, they pooled together to pay for an apartment and took the best of care for her. Unbeknownst to them, one of Vivian’s storage lockers was auctioned off due to delinquent payments. In those storage lockers lay the massive hoard of negatives Maier secretly stashed throughout her lifetime.
