EA: Regarding your work, Tom Hanks sends the message, “I don’t know who Hanksy is, but I enjoy his (her?) comments via the semi-chaos of artistic expression.” Do you know if Banksy knows as well?
Hanksy: There has been word, from mouths that have some credentials to back it up, that he has seen the work, is following it, and completely encourages it.EA: What’s it like to know that two artists of whom you are, by your own admission, a huge fan of, know about and encourage about your work?
Hanksy: It’s humbling and completely special. The internet has broken down so many barriers where things like this can now happen. I wouldn’t say it’s a dream come true, but it’s definitely a small fantasy.

Banksys Cardinal Sin
Seit einer Woche gehen jede Menge Banksy-Artworks durchs Netz, aber so richtig aufregendes war da nicht dabei. Ansehen kann man die alle auf seiner neu gemachten Website mit einem Klick auf Outside. Am spannendsten war noch sein DIY CCTV Mobile in seinem Fake-Shop und passend zum Tod von Christopher Hitchens die gestern enthüllte Skulptur „Cardinal Sin“, für die er einer Statue eines Kirchendings das Gesicht abgesägt und Badezimmerkacheln draufgeklebt hat, anscheinend ein Kommentar zur Verschleierung des Kindesmissbrauchsskandals durch die katholische Kirche. Bilder davon gibt’s bei My Modern Metropolis, BBC hat die Story dazu:
Cardinal Sin is a bust with its face sawn off and replaced by blank tiles, designed as a response to the child abuse scandal in the Catholic church. In a statement, Banksy said: “I’m never sure who deserves to be put on a pedestal or crushed under one.” The sculpture was unveiled at the Walker Art Gallery, where it is sitting alongside 17th Century religious art. The bathroom tiles have been put in place of the priest’s face to create a pixelated effect.
“I love everything about the Walker Gallery – the Old Masters, the contemporary art, the rude girl in the cafe. And when I found out Mr Walker built it with beer money it became my favourite gallery,” said Banksy. “The statue? I guess you could call it a Christmas present. At this time of year it’s easy to forget the true meaning of Christianity – the lies, the corruption, the abuse.”
5 Years ago: Banksy punks Paris Hilton
Vor rund fünf Jahren bloggte ich über die Aktion von DJ Dangermouse und Banksy, die eine Remix-CD von Paris Hiltons Album aufnahmen, das Artwork mit nackten Damen, Hundeköpfen und Sprüchen überklebten, den Barcode aber unverändert ließen. Die 500 Alben verteilten sie in Plattenläden in ganz England, die Dinger wurden bis auf ein paar abgefangene Exemplare an nichtsahnende Kunden verkauft… und kein einziger brachte sie zurück. Kurz nach der Aktion gingen die Dinger auf Ebay für 200 Pfund weg, heute sind sie wohl unbezahlbar.
Aus der BBC-Meldung damals: Paris Hilton targeted in CD prank – Hundreds of Paris Hilton albums have been tampered with in the latest stunt by “guerrilla artist” Banksy.
Banksy has replaced Hilton’s CD with his own remixes and given them titles such as Why am I Famous?, What Have I Done? and What Am I For? He has also changed pictures of her on the CD sleeve to show the US socialite topless and with a dog’s head.
A spokeswoman for Banksy said he had doctored 500 copies of her debut album Paris in 48 record shops across the UK. She told the BBC News website: “He switched the CDs in store, so he took the old ones out and put his version in.” But he left the original barcode so people could buy the CD without realising it had been interfered with. […]
No customers had complained or returned a doctored version, he said.

Die Tagesschau gestern nacht über den angeblich „freigelegten Banksy“ und was es damit tatsächlich auf sich hatte: „Etliche Farbschichten verdeckten das Wandbild “Every Picture tells a lie” des britischen Street-Art-Künstlers Banksy in Berlin. Für eine Ausstellung wurde es nun wieder freigelegt. Die Botschaft lautet: Alles ist vergänglich. Doch das interessiert nur die wenigsten. Alle wollen Banksy – und zahlen dafür mittlerweile Höchstpreise.“
Ich mag Banksy und ich mag vor allem eine relativ frühe Arbeit von ihm (ne Zeichnung), die eine Auktion zeigt, darunter steht: „I can’t believe you morons actually buy this shit.“ Das war damals, als der Hype um ihn grade richtig losging. Wegen diesem Satz und der Haltung dahinter mag ich Banksy – und dann wiederum kenne ich Leute, die nach New York fahren, und sich ‘ne abgeflexte Arbeit von ihm aus Palästina ansehen. Wenn ich sowas lesen muss, dann… aber dazu vielleicht später irgendwann mal mehr, wenn ich Lust dazu habe.

Channel 4 hatten wohl am Sonntag großen Streetart-Tag, denn da hatten sie nicht nur Banksys The Antics Roadshow gezeigt, die ich gestern hier hatte, sondern auch die Doku „Graffiti Wars“ über die Fede zwischen dem traditionellen Graffiti Writer King Robo und Banksy. Von Channel 4:
Graffiti – the work of mindless vandals or creative practitioners? To some it is art, to others a sign we’ve lost control of our cities.
Since Roman times graffiti has been a form of anti-establishment rebellion. But today it’s transcending social nuisance to gain cultural and artistic credibility, unprecedented prices at auction and even presidential and prime ministerial approval.
However, at street level a bitter war is being waged between graffiti writers, street artists and the authorities. While graffiti writers face trial and prison sentences for their art, some street artists’ work is lauded and protected behind Perspex. This issue is at the heart of a graffiti war being fought on the streets of London between one of the founding fathers of the British graffiti scene and the most famous street artist in the world.
In London over the past 18 months the tension between the camps has played out in a battle of spray cans between freehand graffiti writer King Robbo and his nemesis, the stencil-using street artist Banksy.
The graffiti war between the two men began in the early 90s but was re-ignited by what was widely seen as an unforgiveable transgression of strict graffiti rules by Banksy. It was an act that pulled 80s legend King Robbo out of retirement to retaliate in the place where it all began, the streets. The film goes behind enemy lines as the war escalates, until tragic and unforeseen circumstances bring about an unexpected ceasefire.

Gestern lief eine einstündige Doku von Banksy namens „The Antics Roadshow“ auf Channel 4. Die hat ein Mensch aus dem Buch der coolen Leute mitgeschnitten und mir zukommen lassen und dann hat „ein guter Freund von mir“ das ganze bei Vimeo hochgeladen. Da ich nicht weiß, wie lange das online bleiben wird, haue ich das ganze Ding gleich raus.
Ich hatte es vorhin schon getwittert: Praktisch 95% aller Dinge in dieser Doku kennt Ihr schon, wenn Ihr Nerdcore länger lest. Von den Yes Men bis Rémi Gaillard ist alles dabei, ausgehend von den Krawallen in England geht um Leute, die Torten in die Gesichter von Bill Gates oder Sarkozy und Schuhe auf Bush werden oder Churchill einen Rasen-Iro aufsetzen: „Britain 2011, and the Kids are revolting. But it wasn’t always like this. In the good old days, a week or two ago, people didn’t just take to the street to take stuff… they took to the street to give something back. These are the storys of people who took on the authorities.“ Ziemlich super, das alles.

Am Wochenende startete in Los Angeles die „Art in the Streets“-Ausstellung im Museum of Contemporary Art und dort stellen praktisch alle aus, die sich in der Graffiti und Streetart-Szene jemals einen Namen gemacht haben, von Martha Cooper bis Shepard Fairey, Spike Jonze bis Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat bis Swoon und Banksy.
