Jim Henson-Gold: Vintage Behind The Scenes-Clips from The Muppet Show
John O’Brien, Kameramann bei ATV, die in den siebzigern die ersten Staffeln der Muppet Show produzierten, hat kurz vor Weihnachten auf Youtube zwei Behind The Scenes-Clips hochgeladen. Das hier ist pures Jim Henson-Muppet-Internet-Gold, nicht weniger. Im ersten Clip macht die Crew ein bisschen Unsinn am letzten Aufzeichnungstag der ersten Staffel:

A little bit of fun by the crew recorded at the end of the first series/season of The Muppet Show in 1976 (I joined ATV in 1977 during Season 2) … I am not sure who was responsible for putting this together (I suspect Peter Harris had an input) but I’m sure someone will tell me.
The cast includes Peter Harris, Richard Holloway, Jim O’Donnell, Brian Grant, Steve Springford, Jerry Hoare, Phil Hawkes, Gerry Elms,John Rook, Martin Baker, Sue Boyers, Francis Essex, Dennis Bassinger, David Chandler, Bryan Holgate, Peter Milic, Claude Walters and the ladies from the Canteen.
Das zweite Video ist das Abschiedsvideo der Crew, entstand am allerletzten Drehtag der letzten Staffel und zeigt unter anderem Jim Henson und Frank Oz bei der Arbeit. This is far beyond awesome.
A behind the scenes glimpse of the Muppet Show on it’s last day of recording at the Elstree Television Studios in 1980 on which I was privileged to work as a Cameraman.
Featured is Jim Henson and Frank Oz who were the main inspiration and creative forces behind the show. Narrated by Peter Harris, one of the two directors on the show … it mostly reveals crew and cast having a very silly day as everyone said their final farewells. Richard Holloway (now Executive Producer on “The X Factor”) had been the Senior Floor Manager for the duration and it was probably inevitable that he became the victim of the flan flingers … he took it in great spirits.
This last day in Studio D was the culmination of 5 years work, fun and laughter on what was arguably the most successful Children’s Programme in the world at the time, having been sold to some 110 countries … it was the end of an era for many and the Muppets have gone on to become truly iconic.
Marvel Exec blogs Original Artworks from the Silver Age
Das hier ist ein Muss für den Feedreader von jedem, der sich auch nur im Ansatz für Comics interessiert: Tom Brevoort, Chefredakteur und „Senior Vice President of Publishing“ von Marvel hat sich ein Tumblelog namens The Marvel Age of Comics angeschafft und postet dort Originalzeichnungen aus den Anfangstagen des Verlags im Silver Age (Mitte 50er bis 70er). Wenn er da dranbleibt, dürfte das nicht weniger als die absolute Marvel-Goldgrube werden. Beyond awesome!

[Seite:] I showed a vignette of this page yesterday, but here’s the whole thing, the first page to the first Spider-Man story from AMAZING FANTASY #15 as drawn by Steve Ditko. Again, you can see where, at the top, the original logo, the web pattern and the box it all was in were all whited out and replaced with a stat of a different Spider-Man logo. Additionally, Liz Allan’s face was corrected to make her prettier, I believe by Al Hartley.

Every year the Hare Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah puts on the biggest Holi celebration in the Western Hemisphere. In 2011 the Spanish Fork Police department estimated that over 40,000 people attended in the first day alone of the two-day festival. Organizers carefully rationed their stash of approximately 120,000 bags of colored powder.
Attendees come from all over the country (and some from abroad), but the majority of attendees are students from Brigham Young, Utah Valley, and Utah universities.
Holi celebrates the triumph of good over evil and ushers in the spring season. The festival commemorates a Hindu myth about a witch who burned children in a fire. One child repeated the Hare Krishna mantra as he was carried into the flames and the witch was burned instead. At the Spanish Fork festival, rock and roll, R&B, and other modern interpretation of the mantra are played by musicians throughout the day and chanted in a call and response game between performers and attendees. The main event of each festival is the coordinated throwing of colored powder, when the sky above the crowd is filled with rainbow puffs of dye.

Jeff Mills is the Wizard – WJLB Detroit Radio-Tapes 1986 – 1989
Ich habe grade nicht weniger als sieben frühe Jeff Mills-Mixe bei Soundcloud hochgeladen, alle stammen aus seinen Anfängen als The Wizard im Detroiter Radio WJLB, wo er von 1986 bis 89 ‘nen wilden Mix aus Hip Hop, House, frühem Techno und Miami Bass auflegte. Und ja, ich bin erst vom Stuhl gefallen, habe danach meine Augen über den Screen geschmiert und musste hiernach noch meine Kinnlade aufsammeln, die mir bis in den Keller runtergeknallt ist, als ich die Dinger hier gefunden habe.
Ich habe ‘ne Sammlung von 600 Mixtapes (die ich mir demnächst nach Berlin schicken lasse und die ich dann irgendwie digitalisieren muss, aber dazu mehr, wenn es soweit ist) und darunter hatte ich nur einen einzigen dieser Mixe, mein Mixtape-Juwel und tatsächlich das einzige Mixtape, dass ich neulich mit nach Berlin genommen habe.
Jedes Jahr suche ich ein- oder zweimal, ob die Mixe online auftauchen. Bis vor ein paar Tagen immer erfolglos und jetzt das: 7 fucking Mixtapes von Jeff Mills als The Wizard aus den Jahren 1986-89! Nochmal in Versalien UND bold UND kursiv, damit jeder die absolute Boldness dieses Postings hier mitbekommt: 7 FUCKING MIXTAPES VON JEFF MILLS ALS THE WIZARD AUS DEN JAHREN 1986-89! w00t!

Neues Girl Talk-Album: All Day (UPDATE: Mix online)
[update] Mit ein bisschen Internet-Magic (Danke Earl!) habe ich den Mix jetzt endlich runtergeladen und bei Soundcloud geuppt, hier der Downloadlink. Und das Ding ist wirklich ein ziemlicher Abschuß, genau was ich heute gebraucht hatte.
Gregg Gillis aka Girl Talk hat grade ein neues Album für lau online gestellt. Die Downloads dort funktionieren bei mir grade nicht, schneller dürfte es mit diesem Torrent funktionieren (Pirate Bay sagt mir zwar, es gäbe keine Seeder, stimmt aber nicht, mein Download ist fertig und ich seede zusammen mit bis jetzt 155 weiteren tollen Leuten). Das Torrent beinhaltet allerdings die Einzeltrack-Version, das Album ist allerdings als Mix gedacht. Sobald ich den habe, stelle ich ihn auf Soundcloud online. (Update siehe oben)
Einen Stream der Tracks gibt’s auf Myspace und auf Wikipedia werden die Samples gesammelt. Ich hab’s noch nicht wirklich gehört, aber der erste Track, der grade im Hintergrund läuft, ist schonmal sehr, sehr groß. Und ich dachte vorhin noch so: Wann kommt eigentlich mal wieder ein wirklich gutes Mashup-Album? (via Testspiel)

Jemand hat die Crimson Permanent Assurance aus Terry Gilliams Kurzfilm gleichen Namens, der vor ihrem letzten Spielfilm „Meaning of Life“ lief, in Lego nachgebaut (via Interweb3000). Die völlige Overthetopawesomeness dieses Dingses hier erschließt sich nur einem erlauchten Kreis Auserwählter, die wissen, was die Maschine mit dem Ping ist und dass man für Lachsschaumspeise keinen Fisch aus der Dose benutzt.

Lightpainting Industrial Robots invade Trafalgar Square

Seit vorgestern steht am Trafalgar Square in London ein Rondell aus Industrierobotern rum und malt per Lightwriting Buchstaben in die Luft. Kein Scheiß.
Das Londoner Design Festival hat die Designer Clemens Weisshaar und Reed Kram damit beauftragt, den Platz zu gestalten und die haben zusammen mit einem Autohersteller die Industrieroboterinstallation namens Outrace erarbeitet.
Auf der Website zur Aktion kann man Textnachrichten an die Robots schicken, die, wenn sie freigeschaltet wurden, von den Dingern in die Luft gemalt und gefilmt werden, anschließend landen sie im Youtube-Channel, in dem sich bislang über 400 Videos aus über 2000 gemalten Textnachrichten befinden, hier die Facebook-Seite.
The installation OUTRACE consists of 8 large-scale industrial robots on loan from Audi’s Ingolstadt production lines. A powerful LED light source is positioned at the tool head of each robot. By logging into www.outrace.org with a mobile device or computer a global audience as well as visitors to Trafalgar Square are empowered to direct the path of the light held by each robotic tentacle, creating a letter trace and text message on this most public square. Long-exposure cameras capture the interactive light paintings and relay them to the project website and social media platforms to be shared.
OUTRACE is an installation that consists of 6 independent systems coordinated by one KWTC CONTROLLER. A message is processed every 60 seconds. The system is capable of handling over 10.000 messages in a week. 1KW WEB SERVER is the entry point for the end user. Each video message is encoded at 8 frames per second, at a resolution of 1280×850 and uploaded to outrace.org and Youtube.

Failes awesome Temple-Installation in Lisbon
Das Künstlerkollektiv Faile hat anlässlich des PortugalArte10-Festivals in der Innenstadt von Lissabon eine Installation in Form eines Tempels gebaut. Die Details, die Mixtur aus klassischen Formen, Bildhauerei, Architektur, Typografie, Metallarbeiten, Altertum und Streetart ist purer, schierer Wahnsinn und bläst einem wirklich das Gehirn raus. The world-renowned street art collective Faile will present the Cathedral Project, a giant sculptural installation in the heart of the city of Lisbon. Faile are known worldwide for their ambitious public projects that have been mounted in such cities as New York, Shanghai, and London. Using the physical street as a canvas for expressing their ideas, Faile is part of a global movement that has been embraced by audiences for its popular approach to artistic and creative expression. The integration of the Cathedral Project within the very fabrics of the city will serve a crucial role in granting audiences the ability to engage and interact on their own terms.
The reactions
People’s reactions have been amazing. This is the high note of the project. You know you have succeed when everybody just stops and wonders what that is all about, before stepping in to the temple to look around.
Some of the reactions I’ve witnessed first hand were:
- During construction, an old man getting up to me asking what was that and how long would it last, to which I replied one month and he just said “so much work for this to be up one month? It’s beautiful, it should stay here”.
- Tourists walking around with maps on their hands, looking to the temple, back to the maps and back to the temple, wondering what the hell that monument is, and why it’s not on the maps. (most common reaction)
- A man who said “I heard there was some shit going on here, let’s see what’s this all about”. He sayed that in such a tone, that it looked like he was about to trash it. But after approaching the temple he literally stayed 10m just at the entrance looking and snapping some pics, while I waited for him to move away for me to take a pic. And I waited… and waited!
Epic Star Wars-Shortfilm shot behind the Scenes of „Return of the Jedi“
„Return of the Ewok“ ist ein supersympatischer Kurzfilm von David Tomblin, Regie-Assistent bei „Empire strikes back“ und „Return of the Jedi“, die mit 25 Minuten zwar nicht wirklich schnell weggeguckt, aber nicht nur aus Nostalgiegründen jede Minute wert ist. Im Film spielt der 15jährige Warwick Davis, der bei Return den Ewok Wicket spielte, sich selbst auf dem Weg zum Schauspieler und der Film zeigt so ziemlich alle der Hauptfiguren (bis auf Obi Wan) in ihren Kostümen.
Warwick trifft im Wicket-Kostüm auf Luke, Han, Leia (im goldenen Bikini), landet in Jabbas Palast, tanzt zu dessen Band, wird von Boba Fett und Vader durch den Todesstern gejagt, fliegt mit einem Astronauten, den er am Flughafen trifft, mit einer Saturn-Rakete auf Endor, um dort seine Ewok-Kollegen zu treffen und jagt schließlich mit versengtem Hintern den Schutzschild-Generator hoch und das ist wahrscheinlich das grandioseste Stück Star Wars-Nostalgie, das ich hier jemals gezeigt habe. Da bleibt mir nicht viel mehr, als ein langgezogenes und aufrichtiges AAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
Die Qualität ist alles andere als berauschend, aber das ist alles davon, was ihr höchstwahrscheinlich jemals davon sehen werdet: Die Original-Tapes gelten als verschollen und das hier ist eine zusammengeschnibbelte Version aus einem 4minütigen Ausschnitt, den es mal auf Starwars.com zu sehen gab und einer mitgefilmten Camcorder-Version eines der seltenen Screenings auf einer StarWars-Convention.
Mushroom Lamps
Die Pilz-Lampen aus Glas, Holz und LED-Lichtern von Great Mushrooming aus Japan sind – mit Abstand und ohne Übertreibung! – die schönsten Lampen, die ich jemals gesehen habe.
Die Website von denen hat eine eher interessante Benutzerführung, was nur zu ‘nem Viertel damit zu tun hat, dass das alles auf Japanisch dasteht, hier geht’s direkt zur Galerie, für die Großansichten der Bilder muss man zunächst ein Modell im Frame links auswählen und dann auf die Bilder klicken. Webdesign in the Year 2010, fuck yeah! Aber darum geht’s ja nicht, sondern um Pilzlampen und die sind fantastisch!

Das letzte ist eine animierte Fassung von Jeremy Rifkins Vortrag „The Empathic Civilisation“, in dem er die Evolution der Empathie untersucht und feststellt, dass neue Technologien wie Blogs und Twitter diesbezüglich einen neuen Evolutionssprung darstellen.
