Playing Super Marios RAM-Timeline as a Music-Instrument
Großartig! Chris Novello zeichnet Images des NES-RAMs für jeden Frame aus Super Mario auf und spielt die Images wie ein Musikinstrument über einen Controller. Nennt er Super mario spacetime Organ und die Technik bezeichnet er als Code-Bending. Toll!
Mario’s universe is held in RAM, which the NES uses to draw his world for each frame of the game. By recording the entire state of the NES memory for every frame, I’m able to go back to any moment in Mario’s life. So then I use the X-axis of the Soundplane to sweep through the timeline of Mario’s universe.
Not only that, but the Soundplane is multitouch, so I use a second finger to specify start and endpoints in a playback loop. Technically, this is similar to the way samplers and granular synths work in audio.. but with the entire memory state of the NES. Conceptually, it is like Super Mario meets Groundhog Day. Mario’s universe computer/time machine gets caught in hellish loops.

The Gear
- Nintendo Game Boys: Each running native tracking software Little Sound DJ, as programmed by Johan Kotlinski. Original ‘DMG’ models, backlit so you can see what you’re doing in the dark.
- Commodore 64C: The C64C model comes with the more reliable/clear 8580 model SID chip, hence selection over original ‘breadbin’ C64 with 6581 SID. Both are good, it’s just a matter of preference.
- MSSIAH: A suite of sound software on cartridge for the C64 that allows you to control the SID chip via MIDI (among other things).
- GP2X CAANOO: I’m running LGPT aka “Piggy tracker,” a sample-based tracker that can also send MIDI signals, which I use to control the C64.
- Piggy=>MIDI Interface: Special MIDI-out converter box, as designed by firestarter & low-gain.
- Micromys PS/2 Adaptor: Lets you use a standard PS/2 mouse with a Commodore 64. Very handy since original C64 mice are hard to come by these days.
- B&W Portable TV: Connected to the C64. I need to see what I’m doing in MSSIAH.
- Mixer: Just an ordinary mixer.

Radioheads Alben “Kid A” und “OK Computer” in voller Länge als 8-Bit Versionen
Einige von Euch merkten bereits an, dass hier deutlich weniger passiert wenn Rene nicht da ist. Das Stimmt. Ich weiß nicht woran es bei den anderen liegt, aber hinten im Backend ist Nerdcore unfassbar träge. So träge, dass wenn ich hier was bloggen will, manchmal gar nichts geht. Gar nichts außer warten, was meine Stärke nicht ist.
Ich hatte gestern Abend diese beiden chipgetunten Radiohead Alben gefunden und hätte sie gerne hier gebracht, als ich aber auf “Artikel erstellen” klickte passierte so lange nichts, bis ich die Dinger bei mir schon draußen hatte. Sei es drum, jetzt geht hier wieder was, deshalb eben jetzt hier noch mal. Weil: Radiohead, Chiptune, Nerdcore – ihr wisst schon.
Für mich im Original riesige Alben und beide in meinen zehn All Time Favourites. Youtuber QuintonSung hat sich beide genommen und komplett in 8-Bit Sound-Ästhetik umgewandelt. Außerdem gibt es die Teile zum Download (Links dazu in den Youtube-Direktlinks). Keine Ahnung, ob die wer haben muss, aber wer beide Alben hier am Stück durchzuhören schafft ohne danach gegen Wände zu laufen, kann sich beim nächsten Potsdam-Besuch eine Flasche Wodka bei mir abholen.

Jemand namens cTrix hat sich aus einem Atari2600 eine Chiptunes-Gitarre gebastelt, im Video sieht man das Teil beim Live-Einsatz bei einem Gig in Japan.
The “gAtari” was my excuse to do something a little silly after I discovered that the Atari 2600 was more limiting than I realized! (31 pitches, minimal waveforms and only 2 channels!) I needed an EQ which could take a high voltage and drop it down to line level (Boss bass EQ) plus a way to hold loops between tracks and parts (Boss delay). So rather than have it “DJ” style config, I thought I make something a little more creative. It uses my atari-x-mod converter software which compiles binary files for Atari.
