Die Agentur Kolle Rebbe hat für das Wissenschaftsmagazin Geolino ein Brettspiel namens Meltdown entwickelt, das schmilzt und so Klimawandel für Kids anschaulich macht. Disclaimer: Gruner+Jahr gehören zu den größten Lobbyisten des Leistungsschutzrechts und darüber hinaus finde ich konzerngesponsorte Bildung grundsätzlich sehr fragwürdig. Wobei es eben auf den Einzelfall ankommt und ich liebe diese Idee hier! Thomas schreibt mir:
GEOlino, the German science magazine for children, wanted its young readers to experience the effects of global warming. Not with dry-as-dust theory, but in a completely child-oriented way. That’s why we’ve developed MELTDOWN – the first board game that melts.
The aim of the game is to take a polar bear family from the permanent ice floes to safety on the mainland. It’s a race against time, as the way leads across real, slowly melting ice floes, which children can make themselves with the accompanying mould, a bit of water and a freezer compartment. The chunks of ice are arranged on a blue polar sea sponge to form a small Arctic. The sponge is used as the game board and absorbs the melted ice at the same time. Now you can start saving polar bears.
MELTDOWN makes children experience the effects of global warming in a playful way. Without any wagging finger – just one hand to roll the dice.

Extreme heat in Australia forced the government’s weather bureau to upgrade its temperature scale, with new colours on the climate map to reflect new highs forecast next week. Central Australia was shown with a purple area on the latest Bureau of Meteorology forecast map issued for next Monday, a new colour code suggesting temperatures will soar above 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit).
The bureau’s head of climate monitoring and prediction David Jones said the new scale, which also features a pink code for temperatures from 52 to 54 degrees, reflected the potential for old heat records to be smashed. “The scale has just been increased today and I would anticipate it is because the forecast coming from the bureau’s model is showing temperatures in excess of 50 degrees,” Jones told Fairfax newspapers.

Niklas Roy hat mir seine neueste Arbeit geschickt: Eine Most Useless Machine mit einem Fahrstuhl. Grandios!
“Perpetual Energy Wasting Machine” is a rope and pulley mechanism, installed in the staircase of the WRO Art Center in Wroclaw, Poland. The mechanism connects the sliding doors of the elevator in one floor with the elevator call button on another floor. Operating in two directions on the first and on the second floor, the contraption automatically moves the elevator cabin in an infinite loop between those two levels.
How much energy does the setup waste?
The “Perpetual Energy Wasting Machine” moves the elevator in recurring cycles. In the first half cycle, the elevator is lifted up one floor, while the latter half cycle brings the elevator down to its original position again. As this is an hydraulic elevator, and as the cabin´s mass is not equalized by a counterweight, only the movement up consumes electricity. Estimating that the empty elevator cabin has a mass of 350 Kilograms, the wasted energy is about 11.8 Kilojoules per cycle (which equals to the metabolic energy of ca. 1/3 grams of fat, according to Wolfram Alpha ). A modified printing calculator inside the elevator cabin keeps track of the wasted energy, automatically adding up 5.9 Kilojoules for each half cycle. The results of this symbolic calculation – which does neither regard energy loss by friction, nor a heavier cabin due to possible passengers – go straight to a waste bin, located beneath the printing calculator.

Interessante Aktion einer neuen Guerilla-Gruppe namens Black Locust, die nach eigenen Angaben hunderte von Bäumen unter die Gebäude von Vattenfall und das Kraftwerk Jänschwalde gepflanzt haben. Ob der Plan hinhaut, wage ich zu bezweifeln, aber das Konzept finde ich ziemlich gelungen, wenn auch vielleicht ‘ne Spur zu artyfarty. Aber kann man so machen.

Die einzig richtige Antwort auf VWs anbiedernde, blöde Star Wars-Werbung: Greenpeace mit zwei tollen Spots, die das Klima-Lobbying des Stinker-Herstellers aufs Korn nehmen. Das ganze ist eine recht geschickte Social Media-Kampagne mit Gaming-Elementen. Tritt man der Rebellion bei, erhält man ein Lichtschwert in Form einer eigenen Unterseite, hier meine, über die man VW den Stinkefinger zeigen kann: „Wenn Leute sich deine Seite angucken oder auf deiner Seite der Rebellion beitreten, erhälst du Machtpunkte, das Laserschwert zeigt an, wieviele Machtpunkte du für einen bestimmten Sammelgegenstand gesammelt hast (s. nächster Absatz): Jede Person, die deine Seite besucht, bringt dir einen Machtpunkt. Wenn jemand der Rebellion auf deiner Seite beitritt, bekommst du fünf Machtpunkte.“
Ich bin zwar bereits seit Äonen Jedi-Großmeister aller Klassen, aber ein Greenpeace-Lichtschwert fehlt mir noch in meiner Sammlung. Also los, Padawans: Klickt!
Unsere Heimat, die Erde, ist in Gefahr. VW bekämpft zwei wichtige europäische Klimaschutzgesetze: strengere Emissionsziele und scharfe CO2-Grenzwerte für Autos. Ohne die Gesetze droht der Erde dasselbe Schicksal wie Alderaan! (Mehr dazu unter VWs geheimer Plan.) Noch ist nicht alles verloren, wir spüren deutlich: Es steckt Gutes in Volkswagen!
Die Rebellion fordert VW dazu auf, sich von der dunklen Seite der Macht abzuwenden und unserem Planenten eine Chance zu geben.

Von wegen nachhaltig: Volkswagen gibt jedes Jahr Millionen aus, um Lobbyarbeit gegen strengere EU-Klimaziele zu finanzieren. Auf diese Weise wird verhindert, dass CO2-Reduktionsziele von 20 auf 30 Prozent bis 2020 angehoben werden. Andere Unternehmen – darunter Google, Ikea, Sony, Unilever und Philips – dagegen unterstützen strengere Ziele. Volkswagen darf nicht hinterher hinken.Für strenge C02-Grenzwerte bei Autos
Effizientere Autos kosten weniger im Betrieb, verbrauchen weniger Öl und stoßen weniger CO2 aus. Seit langem betreibt VW Lobbyarbeit gegen strenge EU-Richtlinien, mit denen wir von unserer Öl-Abhängigkeit loskommen könnten. Als größter Autobauer Europas trägt VW auch die größte Verantwortung. VW muss Farbe bekennen und scharfe CO2-Grenzwerte unterstützen.Taten statt Worte!
VW will der “umweltfreundlichste Autobauer der Welt” sein, aber nur 6 Prozent der 2010 verkauften Autos waren mit VWs Spritspar-Technologie ausgestattet. VW kann es besser, deshalb fordern wir: VWs Fahrzeugflotte muss bis 2040 komplett ohne Öl auskommen.

Eine neue Studie hat den Carbon Footprint von Homegrown Marijuana untersucht und das Ergebnis ist für Hippies dann doch eher ernüchternd, um’s mal diplomatisch zu formulieren.
The analysis performed in this study finds that indoor Cannabis production results in energy expenditures of $5 billion each year, with electricity use equivalent to that of 2 million average U.S. homes. This corresponds to 1% of national electricity consumption or 2% of that in households. The yearly greenhouse-gas pollution (carbon dioxide, CO2 ) from the electricity plus associated transportation fuels equals that of 3 million cars. Energy costs constitute a quarter of wholesale value.

Ich höre grade die Podcasts von DRadio Wissen mit Vorträgen von Claus Leggewie und Harald Welzer, deren Buch mit dem reißerischen Titel „Das Ende der Welt, wie wir sie kannten: Klima, Zukunft und die Chancen der Demokratie“ ich trotz des Titels gelesen habe und angenehm überrascht war von der furztrockenen und harten Analyse der Fakten um den Klimawandel und seiner globalen Folgen, die Podcasts fassen den Inhalt des Buchs ganz gut zusammen.
Gemeinsam mit Claus Leggewie hat Harald Welzer das Buch ‘Das Ende der Welt, wie wir sie kannten: Klima, Zukunft und die Chancen der Demokratie’ veröffentlicht. Darin betrachten die beiden Wissenschaftler den Klimawandel aus der Perspektive der Sozialforschung und zeigen Wege auf, wie wir den Klimawandel überwinden könnten.

There’s been a surprising backlash against Richard Curtis’ short film No Pressure, which was made for the 10:10 campaign, an organization set up to encourage people to reduce their carbon use by 10% in 2010, reports the UK’s Observer newspaper.
The film, which stars Gillian Anderson and has music from Radiohead, was released on the 10:10 website on Friday, only to be pulled hours later amid protest over the 4-minute film’s content. No Pressure shows environmental campaigners blowing-up “recalcitrant members of the public”, including 2 schoolchildren and ex-soccer star, David Ginola, in the style of Monty Python or South Park.

Climategate is officially Bullshit
Kurz nach dieser Climategate-Story musste ich mir in jedem Posting, das auch nur ansatzweise etwas mit dem Klimawandel zu tun hatte, von irgendwelchen Leuten anhören, dass das doch alles Blödsinn sei und die Wissenschaftler doch eh bescheißen würden und ob ich denn noch nichts davon gehört hätte und wie doof ich sei und so weiter und so fort.
Es war ja damals schon ziemlich klar, dass die ganze Story an den Haaren herbeigezogener Bockmist war und jetzt musste die Sunday Times of London von Dreckschleuder Rupert Murdoch die meisten ihrer Behauptungen von damals zurückziehen. Was die sogenannten Klimaskeptiker natürlich nicht weiter davon abhalten wird, ihre Lügen in die Welt zu setzen.
Remember “climategate”? Someone hacked and distributed emails from climate scientists from the University of East Anglia. (It was kind of like Weigelgate except the entire Earth is going to die in a fire.) Some of the scientists used words like ‘trick” and “hide.” Instant scandal: Global warming is made up! A British newspaper has finally gotten around to correcting the record.
