The Collages of Jack Kirby
Imprint hat ein ziemlich fantastisches Posting über die Collagen-Arbeiten von Jack Kirby in frühen Marvel Comics und die setzen sie gleichzeitig in Kontext mit den Collagen anderer Künstler, deren eigentliches Fachgebiet ebenfalls eher nicht für Collagentechnik bekannt war (Louis Armstrong, William Burroughs, Picasso). Großartig, Must-Read für Comic-Nerds!
Beginning in 1964 with the Fantastic Four, Kirby created collages to convey fanciful scenes of cosmic dimensions. These early comic collages were used to further the storytelling and appear to be created concurrently. However, according to former assistant and Kirby biographer Mark Evanier, by the 1970s Kirby would often create collages from his collection of photographic magazines such as National Geographic and Life, whenever the mood struck him, and make good use of them at a later date. Considering that he was one of the fastest artists in comics, and worked upward of 70 to 80 hours a week at the drawing board during this period, why would Kirby slow himself down to create a collage, which no doubt was more time consuming? Scissors, exacto knife, and rubber cement were no match for the lightening speed of his hand. It is yet additional evidence of Kirby’s unbridled creativity and imagination, as well as the compulsive need to create at all costs, spending time composing these collages in what little spare time he had.
Vintage Pulp Adventures in retro Home Mags
Nadine Boughtons Collagen-Serie “True Adventures in Better Homes” masht Motive aus den Covern der alten 50s-Pulp-Serie Mens Adventure und Einrichtungs-Magazinen aus den 70ern. Gefällt mir außerordentlich gut, aber mit alten Pulp-Covern kriegt man mich immer. Hier ein paar meiner Favs und ein Snip:
Men’s adventure magazines of the 1950’s and early 1960’s are shocking, funny, ambiguously rich artifacts of popular culture. Seeing them as narratives from the collective psyche, in this portfolio I consider how they would speak in an environment of orderly homes with sunny patios depicted in women’s magazines of the same era.
Here is a collision of two worlds: men’s adventure magazines or “sweats” meets Better Homes and Gardens. These photocollages are set against the backdrop of the McCarthy era, advertising, sexual repression, WWII and the Korean War. The cool, insular world of mid-century modern living glossed over all danger and darkness, which the heroic male fought off in every corner.

Porn without Porn 2010
Das Prinzip Porn without Porn habe ich zwar schon öfter und auch schicker gesehen (hier zum Beispiel, Flickr-Set wurde mittlerweile gelöscht, oder hier [NSFW] oder hier), aber scheinbar kommt jedes Jahr einmal jemand auf die Idee, die Leute aus Pornobildern rauszuschneiden und 2010 ist das eben Peter Freitag mit seiner Fotoserie Private Stages. The Collages of “Private Stages” take amateur photographs of nudes from the Internet and undermine the original intention of the images through a simple process of interference.
The main subject – the nude – is obscured with the application of little “dots” that are made with punchhole irons using the colours and structures from the original image. The process of manipulation remains visible on the image plane with dots and circles forming a recog-nizable silhouette of the vanished nude. Through this “low tech” retouching process, the former pinup-photo becomes a simple interior. The background space of the image – previously unimportant – becomes the main subject of the image. Das hier erscheint wegen des Geschwätz’ der Designer (ich bin selber einer und weiß daher: Wir hören uns ganz gerne selber reden) leider etwas verkopft und künstlich intellektuell aufgeblasen. Aber die Arbeiten von Frederic Gmeiner, Torsten Posselt und Benjamin Maus sind tatsächlich ziemlich bewusstseinserweiternd. Oder kurz gesagt: This is some really awesome Shit.
The White Tape Project: Comic-Collagen auf Tapes (plus: NC-Tapes zu gewinnen)
Mein Buddy Hell-G macht Comic-Collagen auf Tapes, die er vorher weiß angestrichen hat. Als ich über Weihnachten zuhause war, habe ich mich mit ihm auf ein Bier getroffen und er hat mir ein selbstgedrucktes Buch mit den Arbeiten geschenkt, das mich weggeblasen hat. Wow! Dann hat er mir noch ein paar der Dinger geschenkt und jetzt stehen Comic- und Dawn-of-the-Dead-Tapes bei mir im Regal.

Jonathan Yeo hat die berühmte Collage von George W. Bush geschaffen, komplett mit Ausschnitten aus Porno-Bildern erstellt. Auf seiner Website gibt’s noch viele weitere Porno-Collagen zu sehen, selbstverständlich zumindest im Detail NSFW. Oben ein nettes Video-Portrait des Herrn, leider ist wohl die Frame-Rate des Videos ziemlich im Arsch, um im Bilde zu bleiben.

Mark Wagners Dollar-Collagen
Mark Wagner macht Collagen aus Dollarnoten. Was soll man mit Dollars in Zeiten wie diesen auch sonst mit Geldscheinen machen? Eben. The Morning News hat ein Interview mit ihm.
How did you start working with money, specifically dollar bills?
I was making a lot of collage and artists books using Camel Cigarette packages. To a large extent it was the familiarity of the pack for people that made the work effective. That led me to the familiarity of the dollar bill. I started small with the bills. Bending strips of the bills became white noise so I started doing color separation. I like old, dirty crumpled bills, but I only use newer ones so the contrast between light and dark is more pronounced. Though I mostly use ones, I did cut up a $100 bill once because I needed Franklin’s portrait. I’ve been working with currency now for eight years and I’m still discovering new ways to approach the material. It takes a lot of patience. When I first started making portraits I thought, “Oh, this is it.” But then I saw a show of tapestries at The Met and realized I should go bigger.
How big are we talking?
A lot bigger. I’m currently working on a 16-foot-tall Statue of Liberty in scale with Washington’s portrait on the bill. I’d done the torch panel years ago and a patron liked the project enough to commission the rest of the piece. The collage of the statue will be accompanied by the work records and a note of its making.
