In conjunction with our very special June 2013 issue, Beastie Boys: A Visual History + Tribute to MCA, we bring you excerpts from some our interviews with Beastie album cover artists from Polly Wog Stew to Hot Sauce Committee Part Two! We find the inside stories of how each album came to fruition through the experiences and artwork of each artist that is now part of the Beastie Boys canon.
We speak to Cey Adams, Haze, Arabella Field, World B Omes, Glen E Friedman, Ricky Powell, Todd James, Mike Mills, Matteo Pericoli, Bill McMullen, Bruce Davidson, Alex Grey, Kiino Villand, Sunny Bak… and, we interview Adrock of the Beastie Boys as he gave us the inside story and behind-the-scenes look at how each album cover was selected, from inside the band.

Horror Pulp Covers
Der unfassbare Flickr-Stream von Mickey The Pixel hat ein Set voll mit über 2700 Covern deutscher Pulp-Hefte, alle in High-Res. Ich hab’ da mal die schönsten Horror-Cover rausgesucht, hier die Flickr-Tags dazu: Geister-Krimi, Tony Ballard, Professor Zamorra, Geister-Killer, Gespenster-Krimi, John Sinclair, Macabros, Silber Gruselkrimi, Larry Brent.
Ich hatte ja vor einer Weile mal damit begonnen, ein paar der Sachen so sporadisch wieder zu lesen, vor allem Gespenster Krimis und John Sinclair. Ich konnte mich ja daran erinnern, dass der Kram doch eher ziemlich schlecht war, so insgesamt, aber es hat mich dann doch überrascht, wie schlecht das Zeug tatsächlich ist. Heisst ja nicht umsonst Pulp. Aber die Cover waren immer super, nach dem Klick eine kleine Auswahl daraus: Gib mir den Rest, Baby…
Vintage Pulp-Cover in Super High-Res
Ich hab’ neulich in der Bucht eine Sammlung mit 100 Pulpmag-Covern gefunden, allesamt HighRes und für diese alten Hefte von beeindruckender Qualität. Die Motive gibt’s alle in 3600 x 4800 Pixeln, taugen mit Abstrichen auch für Offset-Prints in DinA1 (bei 150dpi, Drucker meckern bei solchen Auflösungen, aber das geht grade noch so) und bei Digital Prints kann man damit wahrscheinlich sogar A0-Prints rausholen, ich hab’s selbst allerdings noch nicht angetestet.

Für die limited Vinyl-Edition ihres Albums „The Ways We Seperate“ hat sich die Band Beacon ein Zucker-Skulptur-Packaging machen lassen, hier ein Video vom Produktions-Prozess:

On the occasion of Beacon’s first LP The Ways We Separate, Brooklyn-based sculptor Fernando Mastrangelo has created a 13″x13″ cast sugar sculptural object that houses the vinyl and which simply reads in bold capital letters TWWS. The prototype was CNC milled in wood, which he then molded in silicone and finally cast in pure white sugar.
Iron Maiden Comic-Cover
Ich hatte keine Ahnung, dass Maiden für ein paar Singles ihres letzten Albums Comic-Cover im Stil der 50er EC-Comics zeichnen ließen. Sehr schön, nach dem Klick noch ein weiteres Cover in HighRes! Die Teile kommen von Anthony Dry, jede Menge der Klassiker findet man auf der Website von Illustrator Derek Riggs.

Stanley Donwoods doomed Hollywood as GIF-Graffiti by Insa
Insas GIF-ITTIs gehen regelmäßig durchs Netz, jetzt hat sie oder er Stanley Donwoods (der Mann, der die Radiohead-Artworks malt) Cover für das neue Album von Thom Yorkes Band Atoms for Peace auf das Büro von XL Records in Los Angeles gepinselt und daraus ein animiertes GIF gemacht.
Longtime Radiohead and Thom Yorke collaborator, Donwood, created the artwork for the Atoms For Peace album, a scene of armageddon in modern Los Angeles. This was interpreted by INSA as a piece of his patented GIF-ITI. INSA painted the Atoms For Peace artwork on to the XL office in Los Angeles a number of times, each a different frame of animation, to create a real life GIF. […]
INSA on the GIF: “My challenge was to take two very static items, a beautiful lino-cut and a less beautiful box of a building, and bring them to life. After a week of sweating in the Los Angeles late summer sun re-painting the whole building several times i got there. Animated as a continuous GIF it may only live online but some would argue that is where most now live their lives…”

The Smith-Songs as Penguin Book-Covers
Ich wollte eigentlich nur auf die Penguin Book Cover mit Smiths- und Morrissey-Songs von Chris Thornley hinweisen, aber sein gesamtes Portfolio ist ein ziemlicher Knaller, vom Barbarella Font bis Filmposter sind das durch die Bank weg ziemlich fantastische Arbeiten und dieser Game of Thrones-Print ist der Wahnsinn. The Story of Joy Divisions Unknown Pleasures-Cover
Toller Clip der New Yorker Datenvisualisierungkonferenz Visualized mit einem Interview mit Peter Saville, der die Story hinter seinem Cover-Artwork für Joy Divisions „Unknown Pleasures“ erzählt. Ist anscheinend der erste Teil einer neuen Serie und der Vimeo-Channel ist umgehend in meinem Feedreader gelandet.
In the interview, [Peter Saville] described the band coming to him with the image below, which they found in the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Astronomy.
As funny as it is to imagine the band huddled around a dusty old volume in the back of a library, the story behind the image itself is actually quite fascinating. Saville describes it as a “comparative path demonstration of frequency from a signal of a pulsar.” Each horizontal line, reaching a series of peaks close to the middle of the graph, is observed data from a this pulsar, and there are several of them stacked together. Saville goes on, “What you’re seeing is a comparative chart of the frequency and the accuracy of this signal.”
So this image, perceived as so simple, is not really simple at all but the result of astronomical readings that led in part to humanity’s understanding of this one component of the cosmos. Heavy. Who knew Joy Division had a penchant for data visualization?

Peter Savilles Sleeve-Design
Peter Saville ist Design-Legende und gilt eher als der unzuverlässige El Duderino des Grafik-Designs. Er hat so ziemlich alle Plattencover gestaltet, die es gibt, am bekanntesten ist er wohl für seine Joy Division-Cover und das legendäre Floppydisc-Sleeve für New Orders „Blue Monday“. Und ich habe grade eben gelernt, dass er nicht nur tausend Designs für Postpunk und New Wave produzierte, sondern auch für… Whams „Last Christmas“.
Die Website Petersaville.info sammelt seine Cover-Designs, die Bilder gibt’s leider nur halbwegs oft in HighRes, dafür ist man um Vollständigkeit bemüht. Die bislang umfassendste Cover-Werkschau Savilles, die ich kenne. Tons of good stuff.
The best Comic-Cover Remix-Blog is no more: R.I.P. Covered
Covered is no more. Eins der ersten und besten Comic-Cover-Remixblogs gibt auf, sad day. Auf Covered lieferten Illustratoren und Comiczeichner mal mehr, mal weniger tolle Varianten bekannter Comics. Robert wird im Verlauf der Woche den Rest der verbliebenen, eingesendeten Zeichnungen veröffentlichen und dann ist Schicht im Schacht. Sehr schade um das tolle Projekt.
I’ve decided to have Covered go out with a bang. For the next week or so, I’m going to post two covers a day until I run out.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the artists who sent covers to this blog. 1,000 covers is a lot and there are a lot of great artists who have been featured here. Running this, I’ve had the pleasure to discover strong new talents as well as getting to work with some of my heroes. It’s been a wonderful experience. I’d also like to thank those who would visit and leave the occasional comment. Sadly, nobody got paid doing this, it was a labor of love for all involved. Feedback was all that the artists were going to receive for hours of work. The blog will stay up, so if you see something you love, leave a comment and let them know.
