The Evil of the Daleks and other Podcasts

The evil of the Daleks
Radio ABC: “They are among the most loved, or most feared, villains in science fiction. But what is it that makes Dalek such great baddies? What constitutes evil and why do the Daleks represent a very specific idea about rationality and morality? This week, we talk to a philosopher about what the Daleks have to tell us—in their mechanical, screechy voices—about who we are.” […]

Dr. Travis Langley – Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight (M4a File)
theofantastique.com: “Dr. Langley is both a social psychologist, and a comic fan who labels himself a “superheroologist.” In this podcast he shares his thoughts on the Colorado shooting and alleged connections to Batman, and additional thoughts on superheroes in American culture.” […]

Cory Doctorow on Copyright
Radio ABC 16.07.2012: “A funny thing happened on the way to the 21st century, copyright policy ceased to exist. Because every copyright policy that we make has a seismic effect on the Internet, and you can’t regulate copying without regulating the Internet.”

The complete Dalek Chronicles

On 23rd January 1965, the Daleks made their first appearance in their own full colour comic strip on the back page of the lavish new children’s weekly comic TV Century 21. Written largely by David Whitaker, who was the series’ original script editor, and illustrated by such legendary comic strip artists as Richard Jennings, Ron Turner and Eric Eden, this popular one-page strip ran for 104 instalments, and finally concluded on the brink of the Daleks’ planned attack on the inhabitants of Earth.

These strips have been reprinted many times in Dalek Annuals and other Doctor Who-related books, plus Doctor Who Weekly, Doctor Who Monthly and Doctor Who Classic Comics, as well as being issued complete and in colour as a special edition magazine.

This is that magazine.

The Dalek Chronicles (Complete)

Vintage Comic: The Dalek Chronicles

Atomic Surgery hat 13 alte, sehr schön gezeichnete Dalek-Comic-Strips: The Dalek Chronicles.

It’s 1965 and Beatlemania has swept the world. On TV, Gerry Anderson’s Stingray is chronicling the adventures of Aquanaut, Troy Tempest, and The Thunderbirds are awaiting their signal to ‘GO!’ On the newsstands the pseudo newspaper magazine, TV Century 21, launches, mixing stories of real science with comic strip-style stories of TV shows from both sides of the pond.

Presented here are the first 13 strips of The Daleks, scripted by David Whittaker, but credited to Terry Nation who created them for the Dr. Who TV show.

Lego Mindstorms Dalek

(Youtube Direktdalek, via Polkarobot)

Doctor Who TV show has been around since the 1950′s and as a huge fan of the Doctor i decided to create my own DALEK using LEGO Mindstorms NXT brick, and special servo module from Mindsensors.com to control the head, probes and eye. He is fully automated and use UltraSonic sensor as well as one touch sensor. Lights are from Power Function and are controlled via motor port A. 2 conversion cables are used (PF to RCX and RCX to NXT) The drive train use standard NXT servo motor. Most grey parts are from the AT-ST LEGO set #10174 and the rest from my collection of LEGO.

DIY = Dalek It Yourself

Sure, it might look easy to make yourself your very own Dalek after watching a couple of episodes of Doctor Who, but have you really thought it all the way through? For those who have the urge to make their own versions of Russell T. Davies’ favorite murderous time-spanning cyborgs, there’s always Project Dalek, an online community dedicated to making sure that anyone can become Davros if they’re willing to work hard enough.

Chrome Dalek Invites Cylons To Bring It

Strictly speaking Daleks are cyborgs not robots, but they remain cyborgs that are unreasonable and grumpy enough to match the meanest robot you’ve ever met. With the blockbuster return of Doctor Who to the airwaves, the quality of tie-in merchandise has gone through the roof. There was always a trickle of toys and collectibles (many were surprisingly shabby) for show’s original TV run, but never have these classic characters looked as good as now.

Final proof that there’s a fetish for everyone: the Daleks, the genocidal cyborgs from Doctor Who, starred in their own porn video a few years ago — and it turns out those egg-whisk guns of theirs have a setting we never knew about. Abducted By Daleks had barely gone on sale before the BBC sued and banned it out of existence. Copies are now incredibly rare — but well worth hunting down, if only for the amusement value.
