Algoraves: Dancing to live-coded Music

Algoraves sind ‘ne halbneue Partyreihe, auf der Musiker Tracks live vor Publikum coden, mit Fokus auf Tanzbarkeit. Veranstaltungen gab’s bislang vor allem in London (und einer in Karlsruhe).

This is no new idea, but Algoraves focus on humans making and dancing to music. Algorave musicians don’t pretend their software is being creative, they take responsibility for the music they make, shaping it using whatever means they have. More importantly the focus is not on what the musician is doing, but on the music, and people dancing to it. Algoraves embrace the alien sounds of raves from the past, and introduce alien, futuristic rhythms and beats made through strange, algorithm-aided processes. It’s up to the good people on the dancefloor to help the musicians make sense of this and do the real creative work in making a great party.

Ich hatte das Video vor zwei Jahren schonmal mit Madonnas Vogue, aber Alphornzauber passt nochmal ‘ne Nummer besser.
Und ich hab’s damals schon erzählt und schreib’s heute nochmal dazu: Ich hab’ diesen Tanz (dieses Mit-den-Armen-rumfuchteln) vor 19 Jahren auf der Loveparade erfunden, damals auf der Schwimbadparty im FEZ mit Väth, von dem gab’s damals auch ein Thumbs Up dafür, kein Scheiß, ungelogen. Das haben dann über die Jahre immer mehr Leute nachgemacht und irgendwann ist dann wohl das da oben daraus geworden.
Kann ich mir mal auf meinen Grabstein meisseln lassen: René Walter, Blogger of pretty cool Crap and Inventor of the Industrial Cyber Goth-Dance. Es gibt wahrlich schlimmeres.

Doku über die Loveparade 1994

Tanith hat eine olle Doku über die 1994er Loveparade ausgegraben. Das war meine Loveparade, kinda. Die Doku hat ab Minute 43 ein ausgedehntes Stück über das legendäre Unity Bath mit Paul van Dyk und Sven Väth, wo ein Kumpel auf Acid in einen Darkroom stolperte und den ich da erstmal runterholen musste.
Und dann der erste Love Park, die Chill Out-Party nach dem Unity Bath im FEZ. DJ Massimo als Warm-Up, der ‘ne neue Platte vom damals noch unbekannten Josh Wink auflegte – How’s the Music? – und wie das geknallt hat, alles. Und der Väth, der ne Blume aus Papier aufdröselte und da waren drei Joints drin, einer für ihn, einer für seine Gang, einer für die Crowd. Danke für die Erinnerungen!

Ich will das nochmal betonen: Ich halte den Harlem Shake für die perfekte Meme. Universell einsetzbar und technisch supereinfach zu produzieren, funktioniert als Flashmob, mit Freunden, als Animation, als Movie-Remix und ist so inhaltlich leer, dass der Shake als Variable für jegliche Aussage dienen kann, sei es Unsinn oder sogar politischer Protest. Das hat sich jetzt auch die Muslim Brotherhood in Ägypten gedacht, die als Antwort auf die Shake-Proteste vergangene Woche einfach ihre eigene Version online gestellt haben. Ein muslimischer Harlem Shake Dance-Off. Jetzt bitte noch die Taliban und der CIA und dann Weltfrieden durch Web-Craze, Völkerverständigung per Internet-Meme.
Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, the controversial Islamist group that is tied to Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi, has gotten in on the act — even if they now appear to regret it. Ahmad al-Mogheer, “an active member in the Brotherhood’s online communities” according to Al Arabiya, has confirmed he is the bare-chested man in the video [above].
In the video al-Mogheer and others wear “masks” with the faces of opposition group National Salvation Front, apparently mocking what the video calls “Salvation’s Last Dance.”

Harlem Shake Protests in Egypt and Tunisia
Der Tunesische Bildungsminister findet Harlem Shake beknackt und eine „Beleidigung“, in Ägypten wurden ein paar Schüler wegen des Harlem Shakes festgenommen – und nun formiert sich Widerstand. Harlem Shake als Protestform. Ich hätte jetzt auch nicht damit gerechnet, dass die Meme nochmal irgendwas interessantes hergibt:
Some students and education officials in North Africa are in an uproar over — of all things — the “Harlem Shake.”
The viral dance video that has spawned thousands of copycats and plenty of eyerolls around the world is not so popular with authorities in Tunisia, where education minister Abdeltif Abid called it “an insult to the educational message” and promised an investigation into a version filmed at a local high school. In Egypt on Feb. 23, police arrested four university students for filming a version of the dance outside in their underwear, reports Lebanon’s Daily Star.
Since then, Egypt Daily News reports a student group called “Satiric Revolutionary Struggle” has cropped up in Cairo, with plans to dance the Harlem Shake in front of the Muslim Brotherhood’s headquarters. Tunisian students have skipped class en masse and vowed to stage their own retaliatory Harlem Shake in front of the Ministry of Education on Friday, according to Tunisia Live.

Photographer Zhang Yaxin was one of the only people in China with access to color film during the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-76). Zhang was a photographer for Xinhua News Agency when he was chosen by Jiang Qing, the wife of Chairman Mao Zedong, to photograph the performances of the model operas she developed after the Communist Party leaders banned traditional Peking opera for being too bourgeois.

Harlem Shake ist durch, die Leute aus Harlem beschweren sich auch schon und die besten Shakes kommen von zwei Waschmaschinen, aber der hier muss noch: DJ Schmollie masht Harlem Shake mit Gangnam Style, womit die Meme einmal um die ganze Welt ging und wieder an ihrem Ursprung angekommen ist.

In seinem 1959er Special „Another Evening with Fred Astaire“ lies sich Fred Astaire als Alfred E. Neumann maskieren. Das WTF hört damit aber nicht auf: Die Maske kam von John Chambers, dem Maskenbildner von „Planet of the Apes“, der Spocks Ohren gebastelt hatte und der mit der CIA zusammengearbeitet hatte, unter anderem auch in Story um die Geiselnahme im Iran in den 70ern, für die sie einen Science-Fiction-Film gefaked hatten, jüngst grandios verfilmt von Ben Affleck in Argo. Yep, this happened.
