Arctic Biologist Shares Astonishing Sea Creatures With the World

Wissenschaftler haben in der Tiefsee im Mariannengraben gigantische Amöben gefunden. Gigantisch ist hier natürlich relativ, die Viecher haben einen Umfang von rund 10 Zentimeter, aber man muss sich darüber klar sein: Wir reden hier über Einzeller! Whoa!

Gigantic amoebas have been found in the Mariana Trench, the deepest region on Earth.

During a July 2011 voyage to the Pacific Ocean chasm, researchers with Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego and National Geographic engineers deployed untethered landers, called dropcams, equipped with digital video and lights to explore the largely mysterious region of the deep sea.

The team documented the deepest known existence of xenophyophores, single-celled animals exclusively found in deep-sea environments. Xenophyophores are noteworthy for their size, with individual cells often exceeding 4 inches (10 centimeters), their extreme abundance on the seafloor and their role as hosts for a variety of organisms.

This gorgeous glass sculpture of an Actinophryid, an ocean microorganism, is over 100 years old. It’s one the few surviving scientific models of tiny, swimming creatures created by a father-son team of glassmakers.

A few years ago, Wisconsin Zoological Museum worker Paula Holahan opened some cabinets that hadn’t been touched for decades. Inside, she found several boxes of delicate glass replicas of ocean life.

Google diving into 3D mapping of oceans

We’ve got Google Earth and Google Sky. Next up will be a map of the world below sea level–Google Ocean.

The company has assembled an advisory group of oceanography experts, and in December invited researchers from institutions around the world to the Mountain View, Calif., Googleplex. There, they discussed plans for creating a 3D oceanographic map, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The tool–for now called Google Ocean, the sources say, though that name could change–is expected to be similar to other 3D online mapping applications. People will be able to see the underwater topography, called bathymetry; search for particular spots or attractions; and navigate through the digital environment by zooming and panning.

Lightshow aus der Tiefsee

Jeez. Eigentlich war das ja ein sicherer Kandidat für die Links, aber die Videos, die David Gallo da auf der TED-Konferenz zeigt, sind einfach zu boah! Kraken, die unterschiedliche Farben für Männchen (agressiv) und Weibchen (charmant) haben und im Notfall sogar beide Farben zeigen (um das Männchen links auf Abstand und das Weibchen rechts in Kontakt zu halten). Wow!
