Charles Eisenmanns vintage Photos of „Freaks“
Charles Eisenmann war ein Fotograf im New York des 19. Jahrhunderts und schoss hunderte Fotos der „Freaks“ auf den Jahrmärkten und Zirkussen, ein paar davon gabs in der Naruyama Gallery zu sehen, die komplette Sammlung gibts auf der Website der Syracuse University und in der Eisenmann-Sammlung befindet sich auch ein Still mit der Bird Woman aus Tod Brownings Film „Freaks“, wobei der Film erst 1932 entstand und Eisenmann 1927 verstarb, ich bin mir also nicht 100%ig sicher wegen der Authentizität der Sammlungen im Einzelfall, aber hey, wir sind hier im Internet, wer gibt schon was auf solche Details? (Ich.)
With his studio located in the Bowery, New York City, photographer Charles Eisenmann began photographing portraits of show people from dime museums in the 1870s. While photographing “ordinary” people in the basic conventional form, Eisenmann continued working on his archive of “freaks” throughout the 1870s and 80s, which he sold in the cabinet style as collectables.
Clothed in stand collar uniforms and bustle dresses from the Victorian Era, each portrait is carefully directed to enhance the visual wonders of the models’ distinct physique.

The operation of wheelchairs and other devices could soon be far less conspicuous, thanks to a prototype dental retainer developed at the Georgia Institute of Technology–for those who don’t mind getting their tongues pierced, that is.
Featuring a small retainer that fits along the roof of the mouth, the Tongue Drive System uses sensors to track the movement of a tiny magnet on the user’s tongue, thereby allowing the user to issue commands by pointing his or her tongue in different directions.

Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 26 years ago, John now drives around in a chin-controlled wheelchair, but after ongoing sessions with Rachel, he has regained body movement that he thought was lost forever. Mark, a client with Cerebral Palsy, has gone through life trying to establish an intimate relationship. The Silver Scorpion: Disabled Superhero-Comic by disabled Kids
Im Sommer 2010 haben sich behinderte Jugendliche aus den USA mit behinderten Jugendlichen aus Syrien getroffen und in einem Workshop einen Superhelden erfunden. Der verliert durch eine Landmine seine Beine und wird daraufhin zum Silver Scorpion, der Metal beherrscht und im ersten Heft gleich mal einen Riesenroboter bastelt, der Bösewichte verkloppt. In August 2010, Liquid Comics joined the Open Hands Initiative to take a group of American youths with disabilities to Damascus, where they met with a group of young Syrian counterparts at the first-ever international “Youth Ability Summit”. In workshops led by Liquid Comics and disability experts from the Victor Pineda Foundation, the children were asked to work together to create an original superhero that reflected their cross-cultural values and ideals as well as the challenges of living with a disability. By the end of the summit, the wheelchair-bound character of the Silver Scorpion was born.
The Silver Scorpion tells the story of an Arabic teenager, Bashir Bari, who loses his legs in a tragic accident. Consumed with anger and grief, Bashir retreats into a world of isolation, resentful of the pitiful looks and whispers of strangers. When he accidentally witnesses the murder of Tarek, a mysterious local metalsmith, Bashir is unwittingly chosen as the new guardian of an ancient power that has remained hidden for centuries. With new abilities allowing him to manipulate the metal around him, Bashir must rise above his personal grief and use this newfound gift to protect the world, while learning firsthand to embrace the values of tolerance and cooperation to achieve great heights. Liquid Comics worked with leading comic book talents Ron Marz and Mukesh Singh to help take the ideas of the youth participants and turn them into an exciting comic book story.

Mick Ebeling in einem kurzen Vortrag auf der TEDActive über sein Eyewriter-Projekt, mit dem das Graffiti Research Lab und er dem an ALS erkrankten Graffitiwriter Tempt die Möglichkeit gibt, wieder Kunst zu machen und mit der Außenwelt zu kommunizieren. Im April wird Tempt auf der Über-Streetartausstellung „Art from the streets“ im Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, neben Banksy, Shepard Fairey und Futura ausstellen.
Das Projekt hatte ich vor ein paar Jahren schonmal hier, kann man aber ruhig nochmal bringen, weil ganz ganz großartig.

Derzeit macht ein Video die Runde, in dem eine junge Dame Cee Lo Greens „Fuck You“ in Gebärdensprache übersetzt. Das Video ist hierzulande natürlich geogefickt. Deshalb als großes Fuck You in Gebärdensprache an die GEMA, an Youtube, an Warner und an die EMI – hier ein weiteres, von Urheberrechten bislang unzensiertes Video mit einem jungen Herrn, der dasselbe tut. Fuck you!

Ihr erinnert Euch an Daniel Francis, Autist mit Tourette-Syndrom und äußerst sympathischer Karaoke-Sänger? Der geht grade durch die Decke. Als ich das Video gepostet hatte, stand es bei 10.000 Views und ein paar zerquetschte, heute bei 300.000, der Mann gibt Interviews im Radio und im Netz und ich gönne ihm das wie keinem zweiten. “The original motivation behind that was born from an obsession with karaoke. I have what is commonly known in the autistic community as ‘special topic,’” he said.
Special topic is not something that occurs consciously. It’s not as if Francis picks his topic. But he becomes obsessed with it to the degree that he talks about it all the time and forgets to eat or sleep. As he describes it: “I become an insufferable bore.”
Singing became Francis’ special topic. His three kids loved it. His wife hated it. But then the tourette’s stepped in to add its little kink.
“My tics came on,” he said. “And I was frustrated because I could not indulge in my topic.” So he thought to heck with it, “I will do it even though I’m tic-ing. I wanted to see what I looked like tic-ing and singing, as one does.”
So he stared into his computer, composed himself as much as he could, and began to sing into the camera. He might be in bed, or elsewhere around the house. But if the computer can be there with him, he can perform.

Es gab tatsächlich einen Dracula-Film aus dem Jahr 1975 namens „Deafula“ für Gehörlose, komplett in Gebärdensprache. WTF?!
Deafula/Steve Adams (Peter Wechsberg). The strangest vampire of all time. Doesn’t mind sunlight, keeps a crucifix, and most likely snacks on raw cloves of garlic. And as the name suggests, he’s deaf, and communicates entirely through sign language, just like everyone else in this movie. No, I’m not kidding.

EyeWriter ist eine Technologie, mit der gelähmte Menschen mit ihren Augen zeichnen können und so immer noch Tags an Hauswände werfen können. Die wurde jetzt komplett als Open Source und mit Anleitungen zum Selberbauen der EyeTracking-Systeme online gestellt. Hell yeah!
Ich halte das für eine der fantastischsten Möglichkeiten, um behinderten Menschen kreative Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten zu geben. Dazu noch DIY und Open Source. Wow! EyeWriter wurde neulich auf dem BLK Streetart Festival vorgestellt, Snip aus deren Info-Text:
The EyeWriter project is an ongoing collaborative research effort to empower people, who are suffering from ALS, with creative technologies.
It is a low-cost eye-tracking apparatus & custom software that allows graffiti writers and artists with paralysis resulting from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to draw using only their eyes.
Members of Free Art and Technology (FAT), OpenFrameworks, the Graffiti Research Lab, and The Ebeling Group communities have teamed-up with a legendary LA graffiti writer, publisher and activist, named Tony Quan, aka TEMPTONE. Tony was diagnosed with ALS in 2003, a disease which has left him almost completely physically paralyzed… except for his eyes. This international team is working together to create a low-cost, open source eye-tracking system that will allow ALS patients to draw using just their eyes. The long-term goal is to create a professional/social network of software developers, hardware hackers, urban projection artists and ALS patients from around the world who are using local materials and open source research to creatively connect and make eye art.
