Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land
Grade bei der Suche nach etwas anderem gefunden: Donald in Mathmagic-Land, ein echt wunderbarer, oscar-nominierter Disney-Short von Hamilton Luske, der unter anderem die tollen Disney-Umsetzungen von Pinocchio und Alice in Wonderland inszenierte. Den Film hatte ich schonmal vor ein paar Jahren gepostet, die Videos damals wurden allerdings mittlerweile gelöscht.
Donald in Mathmagic Land is a Donald Duck featurette which was released on June 26, 1959. It was directed by Hamilton Luske and is 27 minutes in length. Many people collaborated on this project, including Disney artists John Hench and Art Riley, voice talent Paul Frees, and scientific expert Heinz Haber, who had worked on the Disney space shows. This featurette was originally released on a bill with Darby O’Gill and the Little People. In 1959, it was nominated for an Academy Award (Best Documentary – Short Subjects). In 1961, two years after its release, it had the honor of being introduced by Ludwig Von Drake and shown on the first program of Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color. The film was made available to schools and became one of the most popular educational films ever made by Disney. As Walt Disney explained, “The cartoon is a good medium to stimulate interest. We have recently explained mathematics in a film and in that way excited public interest in this very important subject.”
Despite this being a mathematics educational film, a character incorrectly recites the value of the mathematical constant pi. The character states, “Pi is equal to 3.141592653589747, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.” The correct value of pi (to the same amount of digits) is actually 3.141592653589793.
Disney and the Weird-Artshow
Das Graffiti-Kollektiv Weird hat in italien ein sehr tolles Psychedelic-Disney-Piece an die Wände gesprüht und in ein paar Tagen eröffnen sie eine Ausstellung in Berlin. Attila von Weird schreibt mir: „Wir sind 10 Graffitikünstler die sich auf das Malen verrückter Character spezialisiert haben. Wir eröffnen am 21. September im Berliner Neurotitan unsere erste große Soloausstellung. Dort wird es dann eine Menge lustiger und abgedrehter Bilder zu sehen geben.
THE WEIRD ist ein Zusammenschluss von 10 jungen, international aufstrebenden Künstlern und Illustratoren, aus Deutschland und Österreich. Die Gruppe wurde nach zahlreichen gemeinsamen Ausstellungen und Wandmalereien 2011 gegründet und versucht in den Bereichen Malerei, Comic, Installation, Muralism, Urban Art, Character Design und Illustration neue Wege zu finden und Maßstäbe zu setzen.
Hauptaugenmerk gilt dabei großflächigen Wandmalereien und spontanen Kollaborationen der Künstler. Auch wenn der Graffitieinfluss der Künstler hier spürbar ist, fühlt sich die Gruppe im Popsurrealismus verortet. Die Bildinhalte und Themen, des Kollektivs sind figurativ, auf den ersten Blick oft verspielt und verträumt, gleichzeitig aber auch ironisch und provokativ. Deutlich sind surrealistische Einflüsse gepaart mit einer Ästhetik des bizarr-komischen. Dies charakterisiert auch der Name: The Weird meint die Verrücktheit, das leicht wahnsinnige in den Figuren die die Gruppe auf den Wänden ins Leben ruft. Die gemeinsame Gruppenausstellung im Neurotitan ist die erste große Soloshow von THE WEIRD seit ihrer Gründung.

Ein paar Damen haben diese Illu mit Disney Prinzessinnen als Superheldinnen als Cosplay auf der ComicCon umgesetzt. Großartige Idee!

Ashley Hay (Belle): I found this photo online from an artist on DeviantArt named Kreugan Mcgillicuddy; she had about eight of the Princesses drawn as superheroes. We took many of our designs from there while other girls made up their own.
Rebecca Denise Young (Rapunzel): As Ashley noted, she found an image on DeviantArt depicting the Princesses as superheroes. From there, we chatted and reached out to other girls whom we felt would have the passion to piece together their costumes and the love of Disney – as we do.

Kim Jong Uns Propaganda-Hymn and the North Korean Mickey Mouse

Kim Jong Un, der „Große Nachfolger“ von Kim Jong-Il, hat sich seinen ersten Propaganda-Song. Der Track heisst „Onward Toward the Final Victory“ und der Clip dazu wird ein paar mal am Tag im Fernsehen gezeigt, was das nordkoreanische StaatsTV zu einem musikalischeren Sender als MTV werden lässt. The Atlantic hat ‘ne Analyse und Übersetzung des Songtextes. Außerdem: Kim Jong Un hat sich ein Musical/Theater/Aufführung/Whatever angesehen, bei dem die Band in Disney-Kostümen auftrat und so kam es, dass sich der „Supreme Commander“ öffentlich ‘ne singende Mickey Mouse angesehen hat.
Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh took the stage in North Korea during a concert for new leader Kim Jong Un, in an unusual – and unauthorized – performance featuring Disney characters. Performers dressed as Minnie Mouse, Tigger and others danced and pranced as footage from “Snow White,” “Dumbo,” “Beauty and the Beast” and other Disney movies played on a massive backdrop, according to still photos shown on state TV.
The inclusion of characters popular in the West – particularly from the United States, North Korea’s wartime enemy – is a notable change in direction for performances in Pyongyang. Actors and actresses also showed off new wardrobes, including strapless gowns and little black dresses.
Kim himself established the group that performed, and the changes may be a sign that he is seeking to carve out a different image from his father and predecessor, Kim Jong Il, by easing restrictions on Western culture, said Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korean studies professor based in Seoul, South Korea.

Disney World in Animated GIFs
Was ich von Jamie Beck und Kevin Burgs sogenannten Cinemagraphs halte, habe ich bereits öfter aufgeschrieben (nämlich nix), allerdings finde ich animierte GIFs als neuartigen Foto-Journalismus für’s Web ganz spannend, weshalb ich damals auch deren Erdbeerbier-GIF-Story verlinkt hatte. Jetzt waren sie in Disney World, oben die Fahrt durch Space Mountain (von mir um ein paar Frames verkürzt, damit das Bild auf eine postbare Dateigröße kommt… flasht und zappelt jetzt ein bisschen zu heftig, aber das ist okay).

Running around Fantasy Land giddy about the footage you just got was a wonderful departure from normal life.”
Magical Disney World Gifs, hier noch die Cinemagraphs-Website, falls sich das jemand antun will: Dort gibt’s ausschließlich wunderschön fotografierte, solide animierte, unsäglich nichtssagende und banale Langeweile. Aber ich bin, glaube ich, der einzige, der das denkt.

Happy 110th, Disney & Heisenberg!
Heute wären Walt Disney und Werner Heisenberg 110 Jahre alt geworden. Der eine hat Micky Mouse und Donald Duck erfunden, der andere die Unschärferelation. Beide haben 1932 etwas gewonnen: Disney zwei Oscars (einen Ehrenoscar für Micky Mouse und einen für den ersten Farb-Trickfilm Flowers and Trees), der andere den Nobelpreis für Physik für seine Beiträge zur Quantenmechanik. Und ich kann mich nicht entscheiden, welcher von beiden wichtiger war für den Fortschritt der Menschheit, tendiere aber zu Disney.

Disneyland Records released The Story and Song From The Haunted Mansion as a record album in 1969. It featured the story of two teenagers, Mike (Ron Howard) and Karen (Robie Lester), who get trapped inside the Haunted Mansion, with Thurl Ravenscroft as the Narrator, Pete Reneday as the Ghost Host, and Eleanor Audley as Madame Leota. Some of the effects and ideas that were planned but never permanently made it to the attraction are mentioned here: the Raven speaks in the Stretching Room, and the Hatbox Ghost is mentioned during the Attic scene.
