What happens when you mix soap bubbles and lasers? Memo Akten, 1/3 of Marshmallow Laser Feast, just got hold of Etherdream DAC laser and has been “messing” with it using openFrameworks.

Memo developed software to control this ILDA controllable laser projector (or any other pro laser projector), for realtime interactive laser interaction with openFrameworks, on OSX, and is releasing everything (including firmware of the etherdream) opensource.

Jay Silver: Hack a Banana, make a Keyboard!

 Youtube Direktmakey

Toll!

Why can’t two slices of pizza be used as a slide clicker? Why shouldn’t you make music with ketchup? In this charming talk, inventor Jay Silver talks about the urge to play with the world around you. He shares some of his messiest inventions, and demos MaKey MaKey, a kit for hacking everyday objects.

Geld fliesst keins.

Laser-Cut Records made from Wood

 Vimeo Direktwood, via Wired

These records were cut on an Epilog 120 Watt Legend EXT to a theoretical precision of 1200dpi (the kerf of the cut and some tricks I used to avoid crashing the laser cutter dropped the actual precision down by ~1/6). The audio on the records has a bit depth between 4-5 (typical mp3 audio is 16 bit) and a sampling rate up to about 4.5kHz (mp3 is 44.1kHz). So far I’ve successfully cut audio on wood, acrylic and paper, and I’m sure there are many more materials that would work. I wrote the Processing sketch that generates the record cutting paths so that it can be modified for any song, material, cutting machine, record size, and turntable speed […].

You should also note that in this Instructable I’ll demonstrate specifically how I used a laser cutter for this process, but the cutting files I’m using are standard vector graphics in a PDF format, so they can be extended to many other digital fabrication tools.

DIY Virtual Reality on a Smartphone

 Youtube DirektVR

This video demonstrates my approach to 3D Virtual Reality Gaming with a Smartphone. The open source Quake 2 engine has been used to enable Head Tracking and Side by Side 3D. The game is playable on an Android Smartphone. Right now Nexus 4, Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy S3, Google Nexus 7 are supported, S3 might work. No root required. The device was 3D-printed on my Ultimaker 3D printer.

Drive it like you stole it: How To make a Screwdriver-Carkey

Nathan hat seinen Autoschlüssel in einen abgesägten Schraubenzieher gebacken, damit das aussieht, als hätte er sein Auto geklaut: „cruise around like the grand theft auto thug you are!“ Nice one! Funktioniert natürlich nicht mit Chipschlüsseln.

Officer, it’s not what it looks like! I did not steal this car; that’s my key! Why are you getting out your taser?!

For no practical purpose at all, I wanted to see if I could make a screwdriver into a car key. What fun it would be to impersonate the look of a stolen car with a screwdriver jammed into the ignition! And maybe I could empty my glove box all over the seat so it looks like I was scrounging for spare change and prescription drugs too!

Bedroom Cassette Masters: DIY Synthpop 1980-89

Awesome!

I established some rules regarding the selection, primarily to enable me to disallow the hundrets of thousands of guitar-based bands who’d also recorded demos in their bedrooms – the musical aesthetic of primal teenage rock music is one that does not interest me. So, to this end the rules were as follows:

1) Must habe been primarily recorded on cassette tape (Tascam Portastudio, Fostex etc…)
2) Must include at least one synthesizer and drum machine (vocals & percussion optional)
3) May include upright piano, ‘found sounds’, Casio VL-Tone/Stylophone etc… but – and I cannot emphasize this enough – No Guitars.
4) Did I mention it must not include any guitars?

Riding a Stoopid Tall Bike thru Los Angeles

 Vimeo Direktstoopid

In addition to the 150,000 cyclists that took to Venice Blvd. on Sunday, at CicLAvia VI: CicLAvia To the Sea, the “King of CicLAvia” was crowned. The crown was not awarded by the event-creators, but by the buzz surrounding Richie Trimble’s over a hundred pound, 14.5 foot – to the seat, 17 foot – to eye level, tall bike: “STOOPID TALL” aka “Big Boy” as it made its way from La Cienega to Venice beach.

“Everyone looks at you like your nuts and they’re right!” He laughs, “My Mom even said so!”

The day after CicLAvia’s event, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Richie, whose smile from the excitement of the previous day, infectious, never left our conversation. He tells me he arrived in L.A. six years ago, going on his first group bike ride: a Wolfpack Hustle Monday night ride known for its speed through the Los Angeles streets.

“I didn’t know what i was getting into,” as he showed up on a full suspension mountain bike. “They kicked my ass,” but he was never dropped.

Jaws in a Bottle

I was excited when last summer, I was requested to develop a scene from the movie “Jaws,” in a bottle. As I began to think of the movie, many scenes of the 1975 thriller started flashing through my mind, and I even shivered at the idea of recreating the massive man-eater that would go in the bottle.

I had seen the movie when I was a teenager and still to this day have moments of silly fear when I go for a swim at the beach, imagining that a killer shark may be lurking not far off. So, my ultimate goal became how could I literally bottle up all those emotions, along with the overall scene that was to go in the bottle.

Skateboards made from old Skateboards

 Vimeo Direktsk8

As plywood decks became the norm, manufacturers began to color layers to add a visual element. Strips of red, blue, yellow, pink or various combinations could be found between the light hues of natural wood, with splashy graphics on the board’s bottoms and black grip tape on top, sometimes cut into artistic patterns.

Rocha assembles new decks using the remnants of broken and discarded skateboards, laminating them together and slicing the resulting stack sideways to create his material. The result is gorgeous and always unique, turning the distinct patterning of the thin multicolored ply into the standout feature of the decks’ tops and bottoms.

Typing E-Mails using a Guitar

 Youtube DirektflyingV

WK recently allowed me some time to tackle a problem that plagues workers everywhere whether they are working in advertising or some other job that involves a lot of email typing. I’m talking about the problem of not being able to devote enough time practicing shredding the guitar.

The solution of hooking a guitar up so that you could use it like a computer keyboard had been in my head for a few years and it was a real joy to get to follow through on it.
