John Stewart, Sound-Engineer aus Colorado, hat Danger Mouse’ „The Grey Album“ neu abgemischt. Das Album hatte 2004 praktisch im Alleingang gezeigt, dass man mit Mashups auch eigenständige und seriöse Kunst machen kann. Natürlich hat die EMI damals eine Verbreitung zu verhindert versucht, ist aber ebenso natürlich kläglich gescheitert. Forbes hat einen Artikel zur neuen Fassung:
Revisiting The Grey Album with an expert ear gave Stewart the ability to pinpoint its audio flaws, and his professional experience gave him the agency to do something about it. Stewart says he first got the idea to remaster The Grey Album on Wednesday, Nov. 21, but it didn’t really click until that Saturday. On Sunday he set out to improve the album’s audio, tinkering with various faders in ProTools until he achieved the desired effect: “I just kind of put the sonics on steroids,” he says. Stewart knocked out the entire project that day and uploaded The Grey Album (Remastered) to SoundCloud and MediaFire on Monday. In the few passing days since releasing the updated version of The Grey Album it’s been covered by sites such as The Source and FACT Magazine, and a swarm of fans have reached out to Stewart to thank him. “A lot of people have thought that it needed to be remastered,” he says. “So it worked out.”

Vor rund einem Jahr hatte ich über DJ Dangermouse & Sparklehorses „Dark Night of the Soul“-Album gebloggt, dass sie damals wegen Urheberrechtsbullshit nicht rausbringen durften… also haben sie eine leere CD-R veröffentlicht mit der Ansage „Use it as you will“ und zeitgleich leakte das Album auf magische Weise ins Internet.
Mittlerweile gibt’s das Album auch regulär und Antonin Brault Guilleaume hat aus den Visuals von David Lynch, die dem Release beigelegt sind, ein Video geschnitten. Sweet!

ZOMG! DJ Danger Mouse veröffentlicht neues Album als leere CD-R mit Fotografien von David Lynch (wait, what?)
Die Headline ist kein Scherz. DJ Danger Mouse (Wikipedia), der sich 2004 mit der EMI anlegte, in dem er es wagte, das „White Album“ der Beatles mit Jay-Zs „Black Album“ zu einem „Grey Album“ zu mashen – bis heute ein Meilenstein der Musikmash-Kultur – und der hiernach zusammen mit Cee-Lo Green im Jahr 2005 mit Gnarls Barkley eine der heisstesten Acts des Jahres auf die Beine stellte, hat ein neues Album namens „Dark Night Of The Soul“ zusammen mit Sparklehorse aufgenommen.
Und weil auf dem Album massenweise Gastsänger zu hören sind und er ja immer noch Ärger mit der EMI hat, kommt das Album als leere CD-R, die Musik dazu ist „irgendwo im Netz“. Zusammen mit der leeren CD-R bekommt man noch ein limitiertes Buch mit Fotografien von David Lynch, der auf einem Track auch zu hören ist. Ja, David Lynch. Ja, leere CD-R.

Danger Mouse’s new project Dark Night Of The Soul consists of an album length piece of music by Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and a host of guest vocalists, along with a collection of original David Lynch photography inspired by and based on the music.
The photographs, which provide a visual narrative for the music, are compiled in a limited edition, hand numbered 100+ page book which will now come with a blank, recordable CD-R. All copies will be clearly labeled: ‘For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.’
Due to an ongoing dispute with EMI, Danger Mouse is unable to release the recorded music for Dark Night Of The Soul without fear of being sued by EMI.
Danger Mouse remains hugely proud of Dark Night Of The Soul and hopes that people lucky enough to hear the music, by whatever means, are as excited by it as he is.
