Hello World: Documentary about creative Coding
Hello World!: Tolle Doku-Serie von Ultra Labs aus Spanien über Creative Coding und generative Kunst. Der erste Teil ist grade online gegangen, geht um Processing. WMMNA hatte vor kurzem ein Interview mit den Machern:
How is the documentary series structured? Each episode corresponding to a different theme? Or a different tool? Or moment in the development of the open languages?
The series plan consists of three chapters, each of them dealing with different aspects of this confluence of creation and coding. Each chapter takes a concrete tool and its community to deploy a particular theme. The chapter Hello World! Processing we are now premiering, for example, tackles with the specificities of taking code and programming as a medium or creative strategy: what’s the role, then, and the interest of algorithms, data and parameters? What is being explored through them? We are not diving into the questions around interaction, for example, that’s something we want to handle in the Open Frameworks chapter. Nor time, perception and attention concerns, which we’ll explore in the Pure Data one.
Of course, we don’t mean those languages are meant specifically for these proposed domains; we decided to articulate the series around concrete tools to highlight their importance as singular cultural devices.

Finding Vivian Maier – Doku-Trailer

Toller Trailer zur kommenden Doku über Vivian Maier, die in den 50ern und 60ern bis in die 90er Jahre hunderttausende Fotografien auf den Straßen von New York anfertigte und die sie nie veröffentlichte. Zufällig stieß Historiker John Maloof auf die Negative und entdeckte damit nichts weniger als einen Schatz. Die ganze Story steht hier, Snip von der Website zum Film:
Taking snapshots into the late 1990′s, Maier would leave behind a body of work comprising over 100,000 negatives. Additionally Vivian’s passion for documenting extended to a series of homemade documentary films and audio recordings. Interesting bits of Americana, the demolition of historic landmarks for new development, the unseen lives of ethnics and the destitute, as well as some of Chicago’s most cherished sites were all meticulously catalogued by Vivian Maier.
A free spirit but also a proud soul, Vivian became poor and was ultimately saved by three of the children she had nannied earlier in her life. Fondly remembering Maier as a second mother, they pooled together to pay for an apartment and took the best of care for her. Unbeknownst to them, one of Vivian’s storage lockers was auctioned off due to delinquent payments. In those storage lockers lay the massive hoard of negatives Maier secretly stashed throughout her lifetime.
The Internet Archive Documentary
Erster Teil einer ziemlich interessanten Doku über’s Internet-Archive:
Archive is a documentary focused on the future of long-term digital storage, the history of the Internet and attempts to preserve its contents on a massive scale.
Part one features Brewster Kahle, founder of the Internet Archive and his colleagues Robert Miller, director of books, and Alexis Rossi, director of web collections. On a mission to create universal access to all knowledge, the Internet Archive’s staff have built the world’s largest online library, offering 10 petabytes of archived websites, books, movies, music, and television broadcasts.
The video includes a tour of the Internet Archive’s headquarters in San Francisco, the book scanning center, and the book storage facilities in Richmond, California.

Hier der Trailer zur kommenden Atheisten-Doku „The Unbelievers“, die Richard Dawkins und Lawrence Krauss auf Vortrags-Tour im Namen der Wissenschaft zeigt. Ist natürlich eine ziemliche Two-Men-Show, aber da kann man auch mal wohlwollend drüber hinwegsehen, weil: Es kann nie zu viele Dokus geben, die mit diesem Religions-Mumpitz aufräumen.

Schöner Trailer zur kommenden Shining-Doku Room 237. Der Film spielte letztes Jahr auf dem Festival-Zirkus und wird jetzt in den USA auch im Kino gezeigt, wann und ob der Film bei uns zu sehen ist, weiß ich nicht. Wie fast immer wird man hier wahrscheinlich mit alternativen Filmdistributionsmöglichkeiten glücklicher.

After the box office failure of Barry Lyndon, Stanley Kubrick decided to embark on a project that might have more commercial appeal. The Shining, Stephen King’s biggest critical and commercial success yet, seemed like a perfect vehicle. After an arduous production, Kubrick’s film received a wide release in the summer of 1980; the reviews were mixed, but the box office, after a slow start, eventually picked up. End of story? Hardly.
In the 30 years since the film’s release, a considerable cult of Shining devotees has emerged, fans who claim to have decoded the film’s secret messages addressing everything from the genocide of Native Americans to a range of government conspiracies. Rodney Ascher’s wry and provocative Room 237 fuses fact and fiction through interviews with cultists and scholars, creating a kaleidoscopic deconstruction of Kubrick’s still-controversial classic.
Piratebay-Doku TPB:AFK Premiere on Piratebay, Youtube, Berlinale
Die Piratebay-Doku „TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard“ feierte heute auf der Berlinale Premiere, gleichzeitig ist der Film online auf Youtube zu sehen und selbstverständlich per Torrent als Download über die Bucht. DVDs kann man ebenfalls vorbestellen.

It’s the day before the trial starts. Fredrik packs a computer into a rusty old Volvo. Along with his Pirate Bay co-founders, he faces $13 million in damage claims to Hollywood in a copyright infringement case. Fredrik is on his way to install a new computer in the secret server hall. This is where the world’s largest file sharing site is hidden.
When the hacker prodigy Gottfrid, the internet activist Peter and the network nerd Fredrik are found guilty, they are confronted with the reality of life offline – away from keyboard. But deep down in dark data centres, clandestine computers quietly continue to duplicate files.
Leviathan – Trailer

Fantastisch aussehender Trailer zu „Leviathan“, einer non-narrativen Dokumentation über einen Fischkutter vor der Küste Massachusetts. Der Film kommt von Lucien Castaing-Taylor und seinem Sensory Ethnography Lab an der Uni Harvard und wurde schlicht mit einer Reihe wasserdichter Kameras gedreht, die am Schiff, an den Fischern und an ihrem Fang angebracht wurden. Hier der Plot:
In the very waters where melville’s pequod gave chase to moby dick, leviathan captures the collaborative clash of man, nature, and machine. shot on a dozen cameras — tossed and tethered, passed from fisherman to filmmaker — it is a cosmic portrait of one of mankind’s oldest endeavors.
Das Genre des non-narrativen Films wurde ja weitgehend von sinnbefreitem und strunzlangweiligem Timelapsedreck und Idiotien wie „1 Sec of every Day for a Year“ zerstört, dabei ziehen solche oberflächlich story-befreiten Filme ihre Kraft aus der Fokussierung auf Situation und die Orte, an denen sie gedreht wurden, siehe auch die tolle Insekten-Doku „Mikrokosmos“. Ähnlich wie „Mikrokosmos“ zeigt „Leviathan“ Narrations-Ersatz in Form einer Vignette, einem Ausschnitt des Spiels der Kräfte der Natur und ist als solcher eher mit einem Gemälde vergleichbar, dem Festhalten eines Moments, einer Situation. Für mich ein defitinitives Must Watch.

“If life is messy and unpredictable, and documentary is a reflection of life, should it not be digressive and open-ended too?” […]
A portrait of commercial fishing in the North Atlantic as the written word alone could never render it, “Leviathan” conveys the brutal toll that the enterprise takes on the workers and on the ocean, and it could even be read as an environmental parable in which the sea threatens to exact its revenge on humanity. But none of this is explicit in the film, which avoids exposition and context, unfolds almost entirely in the dark and often verges on hallucinatory abstraction. Where most documentaries prize clarity, this one attests to the power of estrangement.
Over dinner in Brooklyn one July evening while in New York to complete the color correction and sound mix for “Leviathan,” Mr. Castaing-Taylor acknowledged that he was still unsure how to describe the film. “It is utterly a documentary, and in the sense that we gave over the camera for part of it, it’s perhaps even more documentary, less mediated by the filmmakers,” he said. “But it also doesn’t feel like a documentary to me. It feels more like a horror film or science fiction.”

Die Doku „When we went MAD“ (Facebook) über Alfred E. Neumann und seine Gang of Idiots hat sich grade ihre Finanzierung über Kickstarter gesichert. Der Trailer sieht schonmal sehr toll aus, der Film hat Interview mit u.a. Al Jaffee, Sergio Aragones, Mort Drucker, Jack Davis und Al Feldstein. Wird bei uns wahrscheinlich irgendwann mal in drölf Jahren auf Arte zu sehen sein, sollte der Film bis dahin irgendwo auftauchen, sag’ ich Bescheid.

„When we went MAD!“ takes a loving look at the legacy of this cheap satire mag that had parents confounded and kids going, well… mad.

Die Berliner NGO Fuck For Forest verkaufen auf ihrer Website DIY-Porno, retten vom Geld den Regenwald und jetzt hat jemand eine Doku (hier auf Facebook) darüber gedreht. Ich schwanke bei sowas ja immer zwischen meinem Inner-Cartman („Fucking Hippies!“) und meinem Inner-Dr.Motte („Friede, Freude, Eierkuchen“), aber der Trailer sieht schick aus und den Film werd’ ich mir bei Gelegenheit ansehen.

Schöne einstündige Doku über Superhelden in alten Fernsehserien vom Superman-Serial aus den 50s (die ich neulich erst komplett angesehen habe) über den obligatorischen 60s-Batman Adam West und den 70s-Hulk bis in die 80er.
They put on a costume to save lives and entertain a nation. They fought villains, rescued the innocent and became role models to viewers of every age. The superheroes of television lived so vividly in the public’s mind, that the actors would be defined by their larger-than-life portrayals. “I will never have a character that is that memorable. Very few actors have a character that is seared in to people’s minds.” said Lynda Carter of her starring role in “Wonder Woman.”

Crowdfund this: „Yangon Calling – Punk in Myanmar“ auf DVD
Alexander Dluzak schreibt mir: „In diesem Jahr erscheint unserer Film ‘Yangon Calling – Punk in Myanmar‘ als DVD und zwar zusammen mit einem Buch über burmesische Jugendkultur. Es wird im Sommer/Herbst bei Fly Fast Records erscheinen, die machen viel über asiatische Popkultur, ‘Beijing Bubbles’ ist da auch erschienen. Ich habe jetzt eine kleine Crowdfunding Kampagne gestartet, um das Projekt zumindest halbwegs auf finanziell trockene Tücher zu stellen. Ausserdem habe ich ein paar Fotos mitgeschickt, sie stammen von Matt Grace, einem englischen Fotografen, der viel in Südost Asien unterwegs ist und mit mir zusammen das Buch macht.“
“Yangon Calling” portraitiert eine Musik-Szene, deren Existenz wohl kaum jemand für möglich gehalten hätte – den burmesischen Punk Underground. Punk ist in Myanmar weit mehr als nur die oberflächliche Kopie einer westlichen Jugendszene. Schließlich trifft die rebellischste aller Jugendkulturen in der ehemaligen Militärdiktatur noch immer auf eines der autoritärsten Regime der Welt. Für junge Burmesen ist Punk eine Möglichkeit, der verhassten Regierung etwas entgegen zu setzen. Sie kritisieren in ihren Songs die soziale Schieflage in Myanmar und fordern Freiheit und Menschenrechte.
Sechs Wochen lang haben die Filmemacher Alexander Dluzak und Carsten Piefke in Yangon gedreht. Sie schmuggelten sich als Touristen in das Land und filmten heimlich mit kleinen Kameras. “Yangon Calling” (Sprecher: Bela B./Die Ärzte), ist ein Film über das Leben in einem autoritären Staat, über persönliche Tragödien und den Kampf nach Freiheit in einem Land, in dem Punk noch echte Rebellion ist.
“Yangon Calling” lief bereits auf zahlreichen Filmfestivals in Europa und Asien und in einer Kurzversion bei ZDF-Kultur. Im kommenden Jahr werden wir den Film auf DVD herausbringen, gemeinsam mit einem Buch über burmesische Jugendkultur. Film und Buch erscheinen zweisprachig deutsch/englisch.

Hier der erste richtige Trailer für die bald erscheinende Doku „The Pirate Bay – Away From Keyboard“, der Film wird im Frühjahr unter CC-Lizenz online veröffentlicht und ist seit 5 Jahren in Produktion.
