Schöner Trailer zur auf dem Sundance Festival nächste Woche Premiere feiernden Doku „Google and the World Brain“. Anhand von Googles Book-Projekt schildert der Film die großen Ideen des Netzes als universeller Speicher allen Wissens der Menschheit, von Wikipedia bis Project Gutenberg, – und an welche Grenzen aus dem alten Jahrtausend diese Ideen stoßen, allen voran das Copyright. Kommen auch ein paar alte Bekannte vor, unter anderem Kevin Kelly, Larry Lessig und Clay Shirky. Der Film wurde von Arte und ZDF co-produziert, man kann also damit rechnen, dass er auch in Deutschland irgendwann zu sehen sein wird.

In 2002 Google began to scan millions of books in an effort to create a giant global library, containing every book in existence. They had an even greater purpose – to create a higher form of intelligence, something that HG Wells had predicted in his 1937 essay “World Brain”. But over half the books Google scanned were in copyright, and authors across the world launched a campaign to stop Google, which climaxed in a New York courtroom in 2011. A film about the dreams, dilemmas and dangers of the Internet.
Doku: Bar 25 – Tage außerhalb der Zeit

Vor ein paar Tagen lief auf ZDF.Kultur die Doku „Bar 25 – Tage außerhalb der Zeit“ über den legendären Club und die New School Hippie-Kommune an der Spree, die 2010 geschlossen wurde. Den Film gibt’s für ein paar Tage in der Mediathek, ein sehr freundlicher Mensch hat die Doku auch bei YT hochgeladen, wo sie hoffentlich mindestens eine Weile bleiben wird, immerhin handelt es sich bei Bar 25 um eins der ersten erfolgreich crowdgesourcten Projekte Deutschlands.
Denn Dein ist das Verspulte und die Magie und die Fabelhaftigkeit… Ein großer Holzzaun verläuft um den legendären Club Bar25 in Berlin. Über die Grenzen der Stadt hinaus ranken sich die Mythen um das Wunderland für Erwachsene, um endlose Partys, Unmögliches und Verbotenes. Wer es einmal geschafft hat reinzukommen, der kommt so schnell nicht mehr raus. Stunden werden hier zu Tagen, Augenblicke zur Unendlichkeit. Denn hinter dem Bretterzaun erstrecken sich Club, Restaurant, Bar, Hostel und Zirkus – eine pulsierende Welt, in der Zeit keine Rolle spielt.
Christoph, Steffi Lotta, Danny und Juval sind die Macher der Bar25 und leben jenseits von festgefahrenen Ideologien und Normen. Sie erschaffen aus einer Brache an der Spree einen Jahrmarkt für Erwachsene. Musik, Ekstase und Kunst sind ihre Formen des Protests für ein selbstbestimmtes Leben. Doch die Umstrukturierung des Spreeufers in Berlin macht auch vor der Bar25 keinen Halt und so steht die Vertreibung aus dem Paradies bevor – jedoch nicht, ohne sich mit einem einzigartigen Spektakel zu verabschieden.

Passend zum heute startenden 29C3 hier ein Preview mit 20 Minuten einer Doku über die amerikanische Hacker-Konferenz DefCon von Jason Scott, der bereits die tolle Doku „Get Lamp“ über Text-Adventures gedreht hatte. Ist noch merklich im Rohschnitt, macht aber jetzt bereits viel Spaß, bin sehr gespannt.
This is the 20 minute preview reel of the DEFCON Documentary, a film about the world’s largest hacking convention and its 20th year running. Filmed over the summer of 2012 and containing hundreds of hours of interviews, parties, presentations and spectacle, the Documentary is to be released on 2013.
Minecraft-Doc officially on Pirate Bay
Sehr cooler Move von den Machern der Minecraft-Doku, über die ich vor ein paar Tagen gebloggt hatte. Die haben ihre Doku selbst auf Piratebay als Torrent hochgeladen (via The Verge), da der Film früher oder später ohnehin dort landet und so können sie dort wenigstens noch ein bisschen Konversation machen.

We wanted to come here first because we knew the movie would end up here eventually, and the best thing to do seemed to be opening a dialogue. Torrents and piracy are a way of life and it probably won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. There are many people that want to punish you for that, but we have a more realistic outlook on things.
We’ve been there. We’ve all needed to do it at some point. Maybe you don’t have the money. Maybe you want to try before you buy. Maybe you’re pissed at us for premiering the movie on Xbox Live. These are all fine reasons. But if you feel that piracy is, in Gabe Newell’s words, “a service problem,” please consider that we are selling DRM free digital downloads that you can watch in whatever manner you please.

Hier der Trailer zur Doku „Minecraft – The Story of Mojang“ mit Gastauftritten von Molyneux und Tim Schafer. Die Doku erscheint am 22. Dezember auf XBox Live und kommt danach auf DVD.
In 2009, independent video game designer Markus “Notch” Persson released a work in progress that would go on to break every industry rule for achieving success. Part exploratory adventure, part creative building tool, “Minecraft” evolved from a cult classic into an unprecedented hit, raking daily sales in by the thousands. By the end of 2010, Notch was able to quit his day job and live the dream of founding his own development studio, Mojang.
This feature-length documentary follows the young company over the course of its first year as their profile expands across the world stage and into the homes of millions of gamers. Napster-Doc: Downloaded – Trailer

Pünktlich zum Jahrestag – vor 13 Jahren verklagte die Recording Industry Association of America Napster – gibt’s den ersten Trailer zu Alex Winters (vielleicht besser bekannt als „Bill S. Preston, Herrscher über die Sülznasen“ aus Bill & Ted) Doku über den Aufstieg und den Fall der ersten P2P-Software. Der Film ist eine VH1 Rock Doc-Produktion, wird also früher oder später auch im Fernsehen zu sehen sein und sehr wahrscheinlich vorher irgendwo auf YT aufpoppen. Sobald ich was mitkriege, steht der Film selbstverständlich hier.
Wired hat außerdem ein kurzes Posting zum P2P-Klage-Jahrestag: Dec. 7, 1999: RIAA Sues Napster.
1999: The Recording Industry Association of America sues Napster, the online, peer-to-peer file sharing service that’s allowing millions of computer users to score free, copyright music. The rules are about to change.
Napster founder Shawn Fanning won rock-star celebrity with the service. But music-industry heads were spinning. So, the RIAA sued Napster and all of its financial backers in federal court in San Francisco. The outcome eventually defined the rules of online, peer-to-peer file sharing networks.
The case began 13 years ago today and dragged on for almost eight years.

Doku: Breaking the Taboo – The Failed War on Drugs
Breaking The Taboo ist eine Doku über den War On Drugs, die online über die Website und YT vertrieben wird (oben der komplette Film) und für die man von Ex-Präsidenten (Clinton, Carter) bis Schauspielern und Popstars gewinnen konnte. Ich hab’ mir die Doku noch nicht angesehen, werde das aber zum Wochenende definitiv nachholen.
Breaking the Taboo was directed by Cosmo Feilding Mellen and Fernando Grostein Andrade, and is Narrated by Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman.
Featuring interviews with current and former presidents from around the world, such as Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, the film follows The Global Commission on Drug Policy on a mission to break the political taboo over the United States led War on Drugs and expose what it calls the biggest failure of global policy in the last 40 years.
Experimental, generative, 3D-scanned Documentary „Clouds“
Im Mai bloggte ich über die experimentelle Doku CLOUDS, die mit Kinects gefilmt wird und deren „Videomaterial“ so als komplett editierbare 3D-Umgebung vorliegt, mit der man dann die irrsten Sachen anstellen kann. Ich hatte schon ein paar Musikvideos damit hier auf NC (such ich jetzt nicht raus) und die Doku versammelt so ziemlich alle Leute, die mit dieser Technologie zu tun haben, am Ende steht wohl eine immer noch klassische Narration, allerdings in einem vom User manipulierbaren Raum. Irgendsowas. Jetzt haben sie eine Kickstarter-Kampagne gestartet und oben ist ein neuer Clip dazu und der sieht nicht weniger als fantastisch aus, New School Storytelling to the max.

Ziemlich tolle Doku über die Entwicklung des europäischen Horrorfilm im 20. Jahrhundert von und mit Mark Gatiss (den man zB aus Dr.Who oder Sherlock kennt), von Nosferatu über Hammer bis italienischen Kannibalenfilmen. Im Frühjahr hatte ich bereits Matiss’ Doku über die frühen Horrorfilme aus Hollywood gebloggt, die Videos sind aber mittlerweile gelöscht, findet man aber sicher noch irgendwo.

Not suitable for those who are scared of blood, boobies and undead cooties.
Doku: Joy Division
Grant Gees Doku „Joy Division“ hatte ich schonmal letztes Jahr gebloggt, allerdings wurde das Video seit dem gelöscht, der Film lief am Wochenende auf Arte (Wiederholung am 11.11. um 2:35 Uhr) und ist jetzt für sieben Tage auf Arte+7 zu sehen.
Der Musikmanager Tony Wilson sagt einmal über die Band: “Alle anderen Bands standen auf der Bühne, um Rockstars zu werden und im Showbusiness dabei zu sein. Nicht so Joy Division – sie hatten verdammt noch mal keine andere Wahl.”
Vor allem Frontmann Ian Curtis fasziniert das Publikum. Er geht deutlich weiter als andere Sänger. Während seiner zuckenden wie ferngesteuert wirkenden Auftritte scheint er wie in einer anderen Welt zu sein. Die Landschaften, die Curtis in seinen Texten besingt, sind seine inneren. Obwohl Joy Division schon nach drei Jahren durch den Selbstmord von Ian Curtis ein trauriges Ende findet, ist ihr Einfluss auf die Musikkultur auch nach über 30 Jahren ungebrochen.
Der Filmemacher Grant Gee setzt der Punkband mit seinem Film “Joy Division” ein dokumentarisches Denkmal. Sein Film ist nicht nur eine beeindruckende Band-Dokumentation, sondern beschreibt auch die Atmosphäre im Manchester der 70er Jahre.

Doc of the Dead and other News from the Grave

Alexandre O. Philippe („The People vs George Lucas, The Life and Times of Paul the Psychic Octopus) finanziert seine neue „Doc of the Dead“ über Kickstarter. Eine „definitive zombie culture documentary […] featuring Simon Pegg and George A. Romero“, noch dazu wollen sie Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, Max Brooks, Robert Kirkman und Tom Savini vor die Kamera holen, außerdem hängen Red Letter Media (das waren die mit den epischen, stundenlangen Videoreviews von den Star Wars-Prequels) da irgendwie mit drin. Definitives Must Watch:

Romero einen Stern auf dem Hollywood Boulevard per Indiegogo crowdfunden, wogegen andere nicht zu Unrecht argumentieren, eine Statue in der Dawn-Mall in Pittsburg wäre hundertmal besser geeignet, weil der Mann mit Hollywood tatsächlich eher so gar nix am Hut hatte. Hach, Season of the living Dead. Gibt echt Schlimmeres.
The Yes Men Are Revolting
Die Yes Men haben vor ein paar Stunden die Kickstarter-Kampagne zu ihrer dritten Doku gestartet: The Yes Men Are Revolting. Ist nach ihren beiden vorangegangenen Dokus für mich Pflichtprogramm.
The Yes Men Are Revolting completes a trilogy of funny feature docs we started a decade ago. In our first film, The Yes Men (2004), we posed as spokespeople for the World Trade Organization, acting out comedic vigilante justice against the elite. In The Yes Men Fix the World (2009), we delivered a bunch of hard-hitting, hilarious stunts that show why we must change our corporations-first system, and what’s in store if we don’t. Lief vor ein paar Tagen auf Arte: Themenabend „Banken, Banker, Bankster“ mit zwei extrem interessanten Dokus über Finanzkrise und Bankster hintereinander. (Und ich mag den Titel der zweiten Doku sehr: Der Tanz der Geier. Muss man sich bildlich vorstellen.) Zweieinhalb Stunden die volle Packung Real Life-Wirtschaftsthriller, nach dem Klick die Infos von Arte.
