Googles Hitchhiker-Doodle for Douglas Adams 61st Birthday
Google hat sich heute ein Hitchhiker-Doodle zum 61. Geburtstag von Douglas Adams gegönnt. Auf Mouseover gibt’s Marvin, Babelfische und Ford Prefects Flug-Theorie, der Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy wurde vor zwei Tagen erst 35 Jahre alt.

Douglas Adams Hitchhikers Guide wird heute (42/6)*5 Jahre alt! Doch zunächst und vor allem, weil das ja alles schon wieder so lange her is’ und weil man es ja nicht oft genug in großen pinken Buchstaben sagen kann:
Don’t Panic!
Vor genau 35 Jahren und einem Tag wurde der Anhalter zum ersten mal auf BBC als Hörspiel gesendet, erst danach adaptierte Douglas Adams die Skripts für seine Romanreihe. Die Raumschiffe hingen genau so in der Luft, wie es Backsteine normalerweise nicht tun.

The Muppet Institute of Technology that never was, featuring Douglas Adams
Douglas Adams und Jim Henson haben für eine Weile, nachdem sie über die Games zu Labyrinth und Dark Crystal in Kontakt kamen, an einem Muppet-Special über Technologie und Computer gearbeitet: Das Muppet Institute of Technology. Ich würde mir zwei Arme abhacken lassen, um das Teil hier zu sehen.
Jim’s goal was to raise awareness about the potential for personal computer use and dispel fears about their complexity. In a one-hour television special, the familiar Muppets would (according to the pitch material), “spark the public’s interest in computing,” in an entertaining fashion, highlighting all sorts of hardware and software being used in special effects, digital animation, and robotics. Viewers would get a tour of the fictional institute – a series of computer-generated rooms manipulated by the dean, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, and stumble on various characters taking advantage of computers’ capabilities. Fozzie, for example, would be hard at work in the “Department of Artificial Stupidity,” proving that computers are only as funny as the bears that program them. Hinting at what would come in The Jim Henson Hour, viewers, “…might even see Jim Henson himself using an input device called a ‘Waldo’ to manipulate a digitally-controlled puppet.”
While the show was never produced, the development process gave Jim and Douglas Adams a chance to get to know each other and explore a shared passion. It seems fitting that when production started on the 2005 film of Adams’s classic Hitchhiker’s Guide, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop would create animatronic creatures like the slovenly Vogons, the Babel Fish, and Marvin the robot, perhaps a relative of the robot designed by Michael Frith for the MIT project.

10 Jahre Douglas Adams R.I.P.
Vor zehn Jahren verstarb Douglas Noël Adams im Alter von nur 49 Jahren an einem Herzinfarkt, aber keine Panik: Wir werden schon bald mit Delphinen reden können, hier sein bis heute wegweisender Artikel „How to Stop Worrying and Learn to Love the Internet“, unten die komplette BBC-Serie zu „Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy“ in einer YT-Playlist, gefolgt von ein wenig Vogonischer Dichtkunst und auf gar keinen Fall den internationalen Towel-Day in zwei Wochen vergessen.

Stephen Fry auf Spuren von Douglas Adams: Die letzten ihrer Art (Doku, 1/5)

Lief gestern auf Arte: Die erste von fünf Folgen (eigentlich die zweite von sechs, leider hat Arte die tatsächliche erste Folge weggelassen, um seinem Umweltwochenformat gerecht zu werden. Doof.) von „Die letzten ihrer Art“ nach dem gleichnamigen Buch von Douglas Adams: „Der Komiker, Schriftsteller und Fernsehmoderator Stephen Fry sowie der Fotograf und Zoologe Mark Carwardine brechen gemeinsam zu einer Reise um die Erde auf. Die beiden Engländer sind auf der Suche nach vom Aussterben bedrohten Tierarten. Dabei folgen sie der gleichen Route, die Mark Carwardine und der gemeinsame Freund Douglas Adams (Autor des Romans “Per Anhalter durch die Galaxis” und damit der Vorlage zur gleichnamigen Serie) bereits vor 20 Jahren bereist haben, um bedrohte Tierarten für eine BBC-Radiosendung zu porträtieren.“
In der Hoffnung, das sehr selten gewordene Nördliche Weiße Nashorn, das sogenannte Breitmaulnashorn, noch in freier Wildbahn zu erleben, machen sich Stephen Fry und Mark Carwardine auf in Richtung Demokratische Republik Kongo.
Auf ihrem Weg besuchen sie die Schimpansen-Rettungsstation auf der Insel Ngamba in Uganda. Stephen, der zwar gegen alle Seuchen dieser Welt geimpft ist, aber nun von einer banalen Erkältung in Schach gehalten wird, darf lediglich aus der Ferne zuschauen, wie verwaiste Schimpansenbabys zum ersten Mal mit erwachsenen Artgenossen zusammengeführt werden. Ein wichtiger Schritt für die anstehende Auswilderung der Tiere.
Weiter auf der Reise Richtung Kongo machen die beiden Abenteurer Halt im Bwindi-Nationalpark. Hier lebt die Hälfte der letzten wilden Berggorillas der Welt, einer extrem gefährdeten, majestätischen Tierart. Eine denkwürdige Begegnung für Stephen Fry und Mark Carwardine. Weiter geht es zum Queen Elizabeth National Park, wo sich die beiden ein Programm zum Schutz wilder Tiere erklären lassen und unerwarteten Besuch von Elefanten bekommen.
Kurz vor der Grenze zum Kongo erfährt Mark Carwardine, dass es zu diesem Zeitpunkt aus Sicherheitsgründen unmöglich ist, in den Kongo zu reisen. Außerdem wird ihm berichtet, dass das Nördliche Weiße Nashorn dort aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach bereits ausgerottet ist. Damit rückt das Schwarze Nashorn oder Spitzmaulnashorn in der Liste der gefährdeten Arten auf den ersten Platz.

Douglas Adams „new“ Dr.Who-Novel
Douglas Adams hatte im Jahr 1979 das Buch zu einer dreiteiligen Dr.Who-Folge geschrieben und das wird jetzt zu einem Roman umgearbeitet. Da das sechste Hitchhiker-Buch von Eoin Colfer ebenfalls nicht mehr als okay war, erwarte ich hier eher nichts, aber Douglas Adams + Dr.Who, das könnte dennoch spannend werden.

Adams wrote three series of Doctor Who in the late 1970s, when he was in his twenties and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was first airing as a BBC radio comedy. Shada was intended as a six-part drama to finish off the 17th season, with Tom Baker in the role of the Doctor. […] Douglas Adams’s Doctor Who series are among the very few which have never been novelised, reportedly because the author wanted to do them himself but was always too busy. Gareth Roberts, a prolific Doctor Who scriptwriter, has now been given the job.
Publisher BBC Books declared the book “a holy grail” for Time Lord fans. Editorial director Albert De Petrillo said: “Douglas Adams’s serials for Doctor Who are considered by many to be some of the best the show has ever produced. Shada is a funny, scary, surprising and utterly terrific story, and we’re thrilled to be publishing the first fully realised version of this Doctor Who adventure as Douglas originally conceived it.”

Ich schaue mir grade diesen Vortrag von Douglas Adams an, den er im Mai 2001 kurz vor seinem Tod an der University of California gehalten hat. Mich hat ja bereits der Titel „Parrots, the Universe and Everything“ überzeugt, aber tatsächlich musste ich in den ersten zehn Minuten grade bereits drölfmal lachen und schmunzle sowieso die ganze Zeit, das mal ganz abgesehen davon, dass alles, was er da erzählt, hochgradig interessant ist.
In this talk at UCSB recorded shortly before his death, Adams shares hilarious accounts of some of the apparently absurd lifestyles of the world’s creatures, and gleans from them extraordinary perceptions about the future of humanity.
NASAs Mondbomben-Rakete ehrt Douglas Adams mit den Gedanken des Wals kurz vor Einschlag
Seit gestern habe ich ja den sechsten Teil des dreiteiligen Hitchhikers auf dem Tisch liegen, die ersten Reviews sind nicht besonders euphorisch, aber verrissen wird das Buch nun auch nicht. Mal sehen.
Diese Woche war jedenfalls dreißigjähriges Jubiläum der Buchveröffentlichung von Adams „Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy“, gleichzeitig hat die NASA eine Rakete auf dem Mond zerschellen lassen. Und bekanntlich lässt die NASA ja ein paar ihrer Missionen auf Twitter twittern und was der Hitchhiker jetzt mit dem Mond-Bombardement der NASA zu tun hat, erklärt sich in den drei letzten Tweets der Rakete kurz vor ihrem Einschlag auf dem Mond:
“And what’s this thing coming toward me very fast? So big and flat and round,
it needs a big wide sounding name like ‘Ow’, ‘Ownge’, ‘Round’, ‘Ground’!”

Bei Abebooks.com kann man eine Erstausgabe des Anhalters kaufen, zusammen mit der Schreibmaschine, auf der Adams das Buch geschrieben hat. Für nur 25000$, bei dem Dollarkurs momentan ein echtes Schnäppchen, denn jetzt mal ehrlich: setze eine Million Affen an eine Schreibmaschine, und einer schreibt Shakespear. Setze allerdings eine Millarde Affen an Schreibmaschinen, und keiner von ihnen kommt auf die Idee des pangalaktischen Donnergurglers, so viel ist sicher.
This is a thrilling object to possess with a fascinating history. It is as certain as can be that Adams wrote his most famous work ‘The Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy’ on this Hermes Standard 8. Aside from the supporting provenance, it still contains much evidence of his ownership and regular use. It bears an anti-apartheid sticker on one side of the object and is boldly signed across the front casing by Adams in his unmistakeable hand. It comes housed in its cardboard box which Adams used to transport it, namely packaging from Simon and Schuster, originally containing copies of Adams and Terry Jones’ collaboration ‘Starship Titanic’.
An address label to Adams’ office at the Digital Village, London, remains stuck on the box too. The typewriter itself is in attractive condition to display, but is entirely unrestored and as precisely as it was when it was owned by Adams. It is frequently mentioned by all who knew him that writing was often a torment for him and as such his lateness was legendary. He once said ‘I love deadlines. I love the whoosing sound they make as they fly by’, and such was his difficulty in producing work on time that in a well-documented act of desperation his publishers once locked him in a hotel room until he typed enough pages to be let out!
Douglas Adams-Audiobook wird Hitchhiker-Prequel
Der zweite Teil der Hörspiele zu Douglas Adams „Dirk Gentlys hollistische Detektei“ soll Ideen von Adams beinhalten, die er für ein drittes Gently-Buch skizziert hatte. Und das neue Hörspiel soll ein Crossover der beiden Universen werden, die praktisch ein ein „Hitchhiker“-Prequel münden.
“There is definitely Hitchhiker’s/crossover,” explains Dirk Gently adapter-in-chief and director Dirk Maggs. “In this second series there is one particular idea from Douglas’s notes for the third [unfinished] Dirk Gently book which at one point he thought might be a Hitchhiker’s book. It’s a very simple idea that puts one of the Hitchhiker’s characters in the same universe as Dirk Gently in a way that I thought had enormous potential. In this series we find that the characters in both universes are inhabiting the same world, and I think where we’re going with this is something that actually resolves later on in Hitchhiker’s. It’s turning into a bit of a prequel!”
Davon ausgehend, dass ich die Gently-Bücher zwar okay, aber natürlich nicht so super wie den Anhalter fand, und dass ich als Fanboy bei Prequels aus Lucas’schen Gründen ein gebranntes Kind bin, sage ich einfach mal: abwarten.
Douglas Adams und Infocom
Telepolis hat sich durch die (bis jetzt) 449 Kommentare bei Waxy geackert und die Hintergrundgeschichte zu Infocoms unveröffentlichtem Textadventure zu „Das Restaurent am Ende des Universums“ zusammengefasst.
Der erste (und schließlich einzige) Teil des Anhalter-Spiels wurde von Douglas Adams zusammen mit dem Infocom-Programmierer Steve Meretzky geschrieben. Dieser bekam einen erstklassigen Eindruck von Douglas Adams Talent, Arbeit auf die lange Bank zu schieben:
“[Douglas Adams] erhob Verzögerung zur Kunstform. Als wir an dem ersten Spiel arbeiteten, hatte er gerade BEGONNEN an “Macht’s gut, und danke für den Fisch” zu arbeiten – und das ENDGÜLTIGE Manuskript war bereits ein Jahr überfällig.”
Diese Eigenart von Douglas Adams wird wohl auch in seiner Biographie (geschrieben von M.J. Simpson) deutlich. Laut einem Kommentator wird darin unter anderem beschrieben, wie Douglas Adams von seinem Agenten in einem Hotelzimmer mehr oder weniger eingesperrt werden musste, um Verträge mit Verlagen zu erfüllen.
Auch bei dem Spiel Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy scheint Douglas Adams häufig durch Verschleppungen geglänzt zu haben, wie Steve Meretzky beschreibt:
“Douglas verschleppte wie verrückt als er und ich das erste Spiel schrieben. Der Unterschied [zu späteren Projekten] war, dass ich immer die anderen Versionen des Anhalters hatte, mit denen ich die Lücken füllen konnte, wenn Douglas es nicht tat. (Außerdem war ich richtig gut darin, seinen Schreibstil zu imitieren. [In der Endphase] meinte Douglas, dass er nicht mehr sagen könne, welche Teile er geschrieben hätte, und welche ich geschrieben hätte.)”

Artist’s NSFW Creations Envision Robot Sex
While making an animated war movie featuring armies of battling robots, filmmaker Michael Sullivan began to get a new idea: His film should feature non-stop robot sex.
The Sex Life of Robots centers around a robot baby and his mother scanning their home computer for porn. It shows — in graphic detail — the scenes of robot coitus that pop up on their screen. “It’s supposed to be like a silent robot porno movie from another planet,” Sullivan explains. Despite the subject matter, Sullivan’s creation exhibits a high degree of artistry. His eye for detail gives his movies a gritty, industrialized atmosphere, as you can see in this preview Sex Life of Robots. Warning: the video is not safe for work (NSFW).

A Proposal for a UN Playground
Andrew Raimist, of Architectural Ruminations, has uploaded some terrific images of Isamu Noguchi’s unbuilt UN playground to his Flickr account here.
On the unrealized project, Raimist writes: “Noguchi designed this playground for a portion of the United Nations complex on the East River in New York. The project was to be privately funded and located on property given a special international diplomatic designation. Nevertheless, Robert Moses (the authoritarian director of public works for the City of New York) was able to get the project canceled. Moses was Noguchi’s arch-nemisis in NYC having ridiculed his design for Play Mountain back in 1933. He continued to thwart any public park of Noguchi’s design from ever being constructed in New York. I believe Moses criticized this design as ‘dangerous’ and little more than a ‘rabbit warren’.”

You might think your anonymous online rants are oh-so-clever. But they’ll give you away, too. A federally-funded artificial intelligence lab is figuring out how to track people over the Internet, based on how they write.
The University of Arizona’s ultra-ambitious “Dark Web” project “aims to systematically collect and analyze all terrorist-generated content on the Web,” the National Science Foundation notes. And that analysis, according to the Arizona Star, includes a program which “identif[ies] and track[s] individual authors by their writing styles.”

Die Eltern einer texanischen Schülerin reichten vergangene Woche Klage gegen Virgin Mobile ein, da deren australischer Ableger ein Bild ihrer Tochter in einer Werbekampagne benutzt hatte. Das Bild war von einem anderen Erwachsenen unter Creative Commons Lizenz auf Flickr eingestellt worden. Dadurch sehen die Eltern die Persönlichkeitsrechte ihrer Tochter verletzt, da weder sie noch ihre Tochter selbst die Erlaubnis zur kommerziellen Nutzung gegeben hätten. Der Fotograf wiederum klagt gegen Creative Commons, weil er sich unzureichend über die Konsequenzen einer CC-Lizenz informiert sieht, welche die kommerzielle Nutzung erlaubt.

The world’s toughest animal has been sent into space. Tardigrades (aka Water Bears) can survive incredibly harsh conditions, including freezing to near absolute zero, extreme vacuum and radiation. Exposed to open space on the Russian FOTON M3 satellite, tardigrades are the first animals tested and perhaps the best candidate on earth for surviving space travel.

What’s Weirder Than a Black Hole? Maybe a Naked One.
Black holes are weird enough. Breaking down known laws of physics to the point of unimaginable conditions qualifies as genuinely strange. But a team of Duke University and Cambridge researchers has now outlined a new twist on the theory, in which a fast-spanning black hole might shed some of the natural shields that keep scientists from observing it directly, becoming what they call a “naked” singularity.
