The Evil of the Daleks and other Podcasts

The evil of the Daleks
Radio ABC: “They are among the most loved, or most feared, villains in science fiction. But what is it that makes Dalek such great baddies? What constitutes evil and why do the Daleks represent a very specific idea about rationality and morality? This week, we talk to a philosopher about what the Daleks have to tell us—in their mechanical, screechy voices—about who we are.” […]

Dr. Travis Langley – Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight (M4a File)
theofantastique.com: “Dr. Langley is both a social psychologist, and a comic fan who labels himself a “superheroologist.” In this podcast he shares his thoughts on the Colorado shooting and alleged connections to Batman, and additional thoughts on superheroes in American culture.” […]

Cory Doctorow on Copyright
Radio ABC 16.07.2012: “A funny thing happened on the way to the 21st century, copyright policy ceased to exist. Because every copyright policy that we make has a seismic effect on the Internet, and you can’t regulate copying without regulating the Internet.”

Norvig vs. Chomsky and the Fight for the Future of AI | Tor.com: Recently, Peter Norvig, Google’s Director of Research and co-author of the most popular artificial intelligence textbook in the world, wrote a webpage extensively criticizing Noam Chomsky. Their disagreement points to a revolution in artificial intelligence that, like many revolutions, threatens to destroy as much as it improves. Chomsky, one of the old guard, wishes for an elegant theory of intelligence and language that looks past human fallibility to try to see simple structure underneath. Norvig, meanwhile, represents the new philosophy: truth by statistics, and simplicity be damned. Disillusioned with simple models, or even Chomsky’s relatively complex models, Norvig has of late been arguing that with enough data, attempting to fit any simple model at all is pointless. The disagreement between the two men points to how the rise of the Internet poses the same challenge to artificial intelligence that it has to human intelligence: why learn anything when you can look it up?

Roger Ailes’ Secret Nixon-Era Blueprint for Fox News: Republican media strategist Roger Ailes launched Fox News Channel in 1996, ostensibly as a "fair and balanced" counterpoint to what he regarded as the liberal establishment media. But according to a remarkable document buried deep within the Richard Nixon Presidential Library, the intellectual forerunner for Fox News was a nakedly partisan 1970 plot by Ailes and other Nixon aides to circumvent the "prejudices of network news" and deliver "pro-administration" stories to heartland television viewers.

Yet the place shows no signs of slowing down. These days, it's used all the time by the likes of Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Taylor Swift, and many of the top names in classical music, and it's where the music is scored for a wide range of movies, including most of the "Harry Potter" series, the "Lord of the Rings" series, all but the original "Star Wars" films, and many others.

Dr. Who Girls Knickers-Collection

Jemand sammelt die Unterhöschen von Darstellerinnen aus Dr. Who. Ansonsten fehlen mir die Worte.

I first started collecting knickers in 1983 when at the Longleat Exhibition I was sold a pair of Janet Fielding’s underwear by a make-up lady. But let me be clear on this; there is nothing “perverted” or “weird” about my collection. We all collect things we like, and I find knickers more personal than an autograph on the back of a plastic cup.

To date I have ninety four pairs of knickers which I think you’ll agree is a wonderful achievement! I have built this collection up by begging, borrowing and on three occasions stealing. I like to write to female Doctor Who celebrities for items of their clothing and over the years it’s become pretty clear to me that the way to ask is to not refer to their “knickers” but their “feminine undergarments”. […]

People are *always* asking me if I have any men’s pants from Doctor Who. I’d like to make it absolutely clear right now that I am not a gay pervert. Lots of my very best friends are gay but the thought of asking for another man’s pants is frankly dirty. To this end I rather hope I’ve heard the last of one cast member who continually *insisted* on sending me items of his clothing.

Fanmade Dr.Who-Anime

(Youtube Direktwho, via Marco)

Youtube-User OtaKing77077 hat einen 13minütigen Anime im Stil der 80er gezeichnet. Das ganze ist narrativ zwar super sinnbefreit, sieht aber ganz hübsch aus, wenn man auf explodierende Daleks steht.

All 13 minutes of the completed fake Doctor Who 80s-style anime. Drawn, animated and partially voiced by myself. Some bits are good, some bits are poor, but on the whole it turned out okay, I think. Enjoy! This is old school Who, so fans of the new reboot show may be confused by the fact that the Doctor is doing martial arts and Cybermen say “excellent.” Watch the classics and you’ll understand. You’ll also become almost instantly more handsome by watching classic Who.

PS – for those complaining about total lack of story or narrative in this clip, I did always state from the start that it was only going to be an extended trailer with no plot. Think of it as highlights from a 24 epsiode series if there was one.
