This project imagines a future without people, where the relics of our unrealised ambitions are populated by some of the species we have, in the present day, come so close to exterminating. I hope to highlight the fragility of our economic systems and the desperate need for us to live in harmony with the other occupants of our world.

Wieder was gelernt: Dubai hat kein Abwassersystem und fährt selbst die Scheiße aus dem höchsten Gebäude der Welt täglich mit tausenden von Trucks weg, die stunden- und manchmal tagelang in der sogenannten „Poop Snake“ Schlange stehen. Bestätigt ja so insgesamt mein Bild solcherlei Luxus-Drecks.
Amazingly, Dubai doesn’t have a sewage infrastructure to support its skyscrapers, including the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. Drivers said they’d been queuing for three days!
Unsurprising then, that many dump their loads into storm drains that lead directly to the open sea. Tourists are warned of the risk of contracting serious illnesses like typhoid and hepatitis if swimming on Dubai beaches.

TEDxDubai 2011 Opening Titles
Schöne Opening-Titles für die kommende TED-Konferenz in Dubai. Ich finde ja generell die Dekadenz dort auf eine faszinierende Weise abstoßend und blogge selbst nur dann über Luxus und solchen Schrott, wenn er auf die gleiche faszinierende Weise WTF ist. Wie auch immer, die Introsequenz ist dennoch sehr hübsch geworden. Vom TED-Blog:

Dass in Dubai nach der Finanzkrise die Hilfskräfte fluchtartig das Land verließen und dabei ganze Wüstenabschnitte voller Mietwagen hinterließen, wusste ich. Dass das Land auch von vor sich hinrottenden Luxuskarossen nur so strotzt, konnte man sich denken und Bilder davon habe ich noch gar keine gesehen. There you go. Und ja, das ist ein roter Delorean, der da vor sich hingammelt.
Luxury cars worth hundreds of thousands of dirhams can be found gathering dust on roadsides across Dubai, the remnants of the city-state’s economic boom that was brought to an abrupt halt by the global financial crisis.
The financial crisis forced many companies to slash jobs and those made redundant who had taken advantage of easy credit during the boom found themselves unable to meet car payments… Dubai Municipality said 1,476 vehicles were recovered in the year to July 31, compared to 1,227 during the same period in 2008…
…Throughout Dubai there are dust-covered cars with violation notices stuck to the windscreens, warning the owners that their vehicles will be removed in 15 days. Once removed the municipality stores them at the Al-Qusais scrap yard.
In a sand pit in one affluent Dubai neighbourhood, the Springs, a Land Rover Discovery sits motionless covered in dust with “another one bites the dust” written on a grimy side window…

Dubais Marvel Theme-Park Concept-Arts doomed by Finanzkrise
Gestern sind Concept Arts zum 2007 angekündigten Marvel Theme-Park in Dubai aufgepoppt.
Late 2007, United Arab Emirate-based Al Ahli Group and Marvel Entertainment, Inc. announced a partnership that will bring Marvel’s full library of Super Heroes – including Spider-Man, Iron Man, The X-Men, Incredible Hulk, The Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer – to Dubai for a major new theme park destination being developed by AAG. The Marvel Super-Heroes theme park project was supposed to open in 2011 with an investment of over $1 billion USD but apparently it seems that it will open now in 2012.
Jetzt weiß ich ja nicht, wie’s Euch geht, wenn Ihr an Dubai denkt… mir gehen da vor allem die 3000 verrottenden Autos am Flughafen dort durch den Kopf, die von fliehenden Arbeitern einfach stehengelassen wurden, weil die Krise schon damals dort zuschlug. Das Thema ist ja auch schon jetzt in den vergangenen Tagen in den deutschen Medien gelandet, nur 9 Monate später.
Ob aus dem Projekt jemals etwas werden wird, ist bei der derzeitigen Entwicklung mehr als unwahrscheinlich, schließlich haben die im Moment grade erstmal verbal eine Staatspleite abgewendet, in dem sie eben keinen Bailout für ihr marodes Dubai World zur Verfügung stellen werden. Vielleicht und hoffentlich bleiben uns ab jetzt gefakete Luxusbilder aus dem Schein-Emirat in Zukunft erspart. Nett sind die Concept Arts aber trotzdem und einen Marvel Theme-Park dieser Ausmaße würde ich schon gerne sehen, aber das sind wohl leider Schäume und Träume wie Jetpacks und Flying Cars.
