I wanted to spread the book-burning message to the book itself. The book’s spine is screen-printed with a matchbook striking paper surface, so the book itself can be burned.

Die Nasa hat im Sommer letzten Jahres eine Sonneneruption gefilmt, die einen Plasmaregen auf der Sonnenoberfläche zur Folge hatte. Und eigentlich regnet es da kein Feuer, sondern das ist 100.000°C heißes, ionisiertes Gas, das sich auf Magnetfeldern entlang bewegt. Whoa!
Eruptive events on the sun can be wildly different. Some come just with a solar flare, some with an additional ejection of solar material called a coronal mass ejection (CME), and some with complex moving structures in association with changes in magnetic field lines that loop up into the sun’s atmosphere, the corona.
On July 19, 2012, an eruption occurred on the sun that produced all three. A moderately powerful solar flare exploded on the sun’s lower right hand limb, sending out light and radiation. Next came a CME, which shot off to the right out into space. And then, the sun treated viewers to one of its dazzling magnetic displays — a phenomenon known as coronal rain.

The Science of Spontaneous Human Combustion
New Scientist hat einen superinteressanten Artikel von Brian J. Ford über spontane menschliche Entzündung, eine äußerst seltene und sehr umstrittene Todesart, während der Mensch von innen heraus verbrennen. Ford hat in Experimenten eine schlüssige Begründung für das Phänomen gefunden (unter bestimmten Umständen produziert der Körper zu viel des Brennstoffs Aceton, die Beine bleiben übrig, weil in ihnen zu wenig Fett für die Aceton-Produktion enthalten ist).
Der Text basiert auf einem ziemlich unterhaltsamen Vortrag (Video oben) mit Spinal Tap und Iron Maiden, den der Mann vor einem Monat in Chicago gehalten hat und da der Artikel nur gegen Registrierung online zu lesen ist und da auch nur für 10 Tage, poste ich den Text ausnahmsweise als Vollzitat nach dem Klick.
PEOPLE explode. One minute they may be relaxing in a chair, the next they erupt into a fireball. For centuries, this gruesome way of death has been debated, with many people discounting it as a myth. But spontaneous human combustion is real and we think we can show how it happens.
The first accounts date from 1641, when Danish doctor and mathematician Thomas Bartholin described the death of Polonus Vorstius – who drank wine at home in Milan, Italy, one evening in 1470 before bursting into flames. In 1663, Bartholin wrote of a Parisian woman who burned, leaving the mattress on which she lay unscathed. And in the Philosophical Transactions of 1745, Paul Rolli told how 62-year-old Countess Cornelia Bandi of Ceséna, Italy, said she felt “dull and heavy” after dining and went to bed. Next morning, her maid found a pile of ash with her legs protruding from the smouldering remains.

The Burning House is a Book!
Vor rund einem Jahr hatte ich über Foster Huntingtons Projekt The Burning House gebloggt, damals noch ein „einfaches“ Tumblelog, in dem User gefragt wurden, was sie aus ihrem brennenden Haus retten würden – inklusive Fotos davon (also von dem Kram, nicht von ihrem brennenden Haus). Die Website ging viral und Huntington fuhr an der Westküste entlang, um auch Leute zu erreichen, die keine Blogs lesen. Das Ergebnis ist ein jetzt erschienener und superspannender Fotoband zum Tumblr.
He set out to find those rare specimens who “had never heard of Tumblr, had never seen an iPad” — on other words, the kinds of people with whom he would’ve never crossed paths had he stayed in Manhattan.
