Happy 15th, Firefox!
Das Mozilla-Projekt und damit der Firefox-Browser hatte gestern seinen 15. Geburtstag, herzlichen Glückwunsch! Hier die Geburtstagsseite auf Mozilla.org, heise open hat ein schönes Posting dazu:
Seinen Ursprung nahm das Projekt vor 15 Jahren mit der Veröffentlichung der Quelltexte des Netscape Navigators als Open Source; kurz zuvor hatte Netscape die Webseite mozilla.org gestartet, um dort die Weiterentwicklung des Browsers zu koordinieren.
Netscape war im damaligen Browser-Krieg gegen Microsoft ins Hintertreffen geraten, nachdem die Redmonder ihren Internet Explorer mit Macht in den Markt gedrückt hatten. Als Antwort darauf gab Netscape die Quellen seines Browsers frei mit dem Ziel, eine Entwickler-Community aufzubauen. Das gelang, und im Juni 2002 wurde Mozilla 1.0 veröffentlicht – eine Websuite aus Browser, E-Mail-Programm, IRC-Client, Newsreader und HTML-Editor.
ShareMeNot: Social Buttons without User-Tracking
Tolles Firefux-Plugin, das das Tracken der User von Social Buttons wie Facebooks Like- oder Googles +1-Button (die man auch hier auf NC findet) verhindert, ohne den Service selbst abzuschalten. Heisst: Man kann mit diesem Plugin weiterhin Dinge plussen und liken, ohne getrackt zu werden. Sweet!

Fucking Geofucking via Autoproxy Browser-Plugin
Schönes Plugin für faule Säcke wie mich, die „zu wenig Zeit“ haben, um sich mit Proxies oder Annonymisierungsdiensten herumzuschlagen, nur weil die GEMA in Kooperation mit Youtube mal wieder ein Video blocken. Stealthy ist ein One-Click-Anonymisierer für Firefox, ich hab’s grade ausprobiert, funktioniert wunderbar. Testen kann man das Plugin zum Beispiel mit Ziggy Stardust von David Bowie, ist bei uns geogefickt und lief grade mit einem Klick mehr bei mir im Browser.

Destroy the Web: Website-Shoot’em Up-Plugin
Mit dem Plugin „Destroy the Web“ für Firefox 3.5 verwandelt man jede Website in ein Shoot’em-Up-Game und man muss jedes Element der Website abballern, hat dafür aber nur begrenzt Zeit. Tricky: Man muss dabei die Reihenfolge der eingeschlossenen HTML-Elemente einhalten, die oberste Ebene zu beginn, ein Container-DIV oder sowas zum Schluß.

Oil Spill Firefox-Plugin
Das Plugin lies sich bei meiner Firefox-Version (3.5.9) zwar nicht installieren, aber die Idee ist super: Es schwärzt alle Nennungen von BP und ein paar Varianten und lässt da schwarze Soße runterlaufen. Solche Dinge passieren grade übrigens auch im echten Leben: Junk Shot.

Die New York Times über Pirates of the Amazon
Die New York Times hat einen Artikel zum Takedown des Firefox-Plugins, über das ich neulich gebloggt hatte und mit dem man Pirate-Bay-Links in das Amazon-Interface einblenden konnte. Die Entwickler meinen, es sei eine Parodie und ich gebe ihnen (natürlich) Recht: ein solches Plugin ist völlig sinnbefreit. Jeder, der weiß, wie man ein Pirate-Bay-Plugin für Amazon installiert, weiß genauso, wie man den Rest erledigt, auch ohne Plugin. Es war eine Demonstration, here’s Technology and there’s nothing you can do about it (but sending crappy Takedown-Notes).
Earlier this week, two students from the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, made headlines by releasing a plug-in for the Firefox Web browser that made it easy for people who were browsing books, music and movies on Amazon.com to download the same products free through the Pirate Bay, the illicit BitTorrent site.
Lawyers for Amazon.com promptly served the students’ Internet service provider with a take-down notice, and on Thursday the students complied and removed the tool.
In an interesting twist, the students now say their project was a parody and an “experiment on interface design, information access and currently debated issues in media culture,” according to their Web site. One of the students, John, who did not give his last name, tried to explain further in an e-mail message.
Amazon and the Pirate Bay “might look like opposites, but are actually quite similar in regards to the mainstream media content they provide,” he wrote. “Our project demonstrated this practically. So it’s a parody of any kind of media consumerism, whether corporate or subcultural.”
Parodies are given a certain amount of protection under United States copyright law.
John added: “The project struck quite some nerve; it surprised us that most people did not seem to get the humor and absurdity of it.”
Piratebay Firefox-Plugin für Amazon
Irgendjemand dachte, es wäre eine coole Idee, ein Plugin zu programmieren, dass einem beim Amazon-Shopping einen Downloadbutton anzeigt, wenn es ein korrespondierendes Torrent auf Pirate Bay gibt, um den Kram… anderweitig zu besorgen. Was keiner macht, selbstverständlich.
The Firefox add-on “Pirates of the Amazon” inserts a “download 4 free” button on Amazon, which links to corresponding Piratebay BitTorrents. The add-on lowers the technical barrier to enable anyone to choose between “add to shopping cart” or “download 4 free”. Are you a pirate?
Firefox Tab-Scroll unterdrücken
Wenn man, wie ich, sehr oft sehr viele Tabs im Browser öffnet, um von denen das ein oder andere zu bloggen, dann finde ich es immer völlig beknackt, dass Firefox ab einer Mindestbreite von 100 Pixeln die Tabs nicht weiter verschmälert, sondern einen Tab-Scroller anbietet. Jetzt habe ich endlich rausgefunden, wie man den unterdrückt, so dass Firefox immer alle Tabs anzeigt, egal wieviele man davon öffnet.
Per „about:config“ ins Konfigurationsmenü wechseln, dort die Zeile „browser.tabs.tabMinWidth“ raussuchen und den Wert auf Null setzen.
Config name: browser.tabs.tabMinWidth
Default: 100
Modified value: 0 if you want to disable the scrolling functions, other values to set the min width value
