Early iPhone Prototype from 2005
Ein ehemaliger Apple-Mitarbeiter hat Ars Technica Bilder eines 2005er Inhouse-Prototypen des iPhones zugeschickt. Massive!
In-house version of the iPhone from early 2005. The images to Ars through a former Apple employee who worked on various Apple hardware projects in the early 2000s and was thus exposed to some of the earliest versions of the iPhone. (He declined to be named out of concern for retribution from Apple.)
As seen in the gallery above, this early prototype has a number of ports that we’re used to seeing more commonly on computers than on mobile devices, including USB ports, an Ethernet port, and even a serial port. Apple never intended for all of these to make it into the final product, of course—our source said that because this was a development prototype, ports like Ethernet and serial were included simply to make working on the device easier.

Maybe it’s time. Our gizmos and gadgets, our phones and laptops and tablets and videogame consoles just aren’t very special anymore. And counter-intuitively, that’s what’s so newly special about them: their familiarity, their ordinariness. Their ever-accelerating status as ground rather than figure. We mistakenly believe that the label “next generation” implies newness and innovation, a promise of the technological utopia we’ve been dreaming of. But if you pause to reflect on the matter, you’ll quickly realize that all those earlier generations were once next generations themselves, for some previously current generation. Innovation is like a Chinese finger trap: the more you tug deliberately at progress, the less progress you make, because the deepest, most profund novelty is the kind that blinds us to novelty. Every “next” thing shouldn’t have to be a revolution. It can just be what comes next.
Google Glass goes Beta
Google Glass ist seit heute in sowas wie einer Beta-Phase, dazu haben sie ein Demo-Video und ‘ne Website ins Netz gestellt, auf der man sich per Twitter-Hashtag-Contest unter #ifihadglass für die ersten Brillen bewerben kann. Das Video ist natürlich voller Funfunfun-Menschen und ziemlich microsoftesque, aber es hilft ja nix: Das sieht großartig aus und die Dinger haben das Potential, mindestens einiges an Sehgewohnheiten im Netz zu verändern. I’m totally sold.
Knights of the Round Table-Watch
Eine Uhr in Form der Tafelrunde inklusive 12 kleiner Mini-Ritter aus Gold. Sieht auf so ‘ne Art völlig beknackt aus, will ich aber trotzdem haben und dann kleb’ ich da ein kleines Schild an meine sauteure Uhr, auf dem steht: „Nur ‘ne Attrappe.“

Drawing inspiration from the exploits of King Arthur’s knights, the Geneva Manufacture has created a series of 88 exceptional pieces distinguished by their boldness and steeped in history. 12 heroes and their swords cast in gold encircle a striking enamelled dial while the automatic movement RD822 beats below. The scene is symbolic. Most of the adventures of the gallant knights were initiated in meetings at the round table.
Their courage knew no bounds, their faith was unshakeable, they were the Knights of the Round Table. Courage was their paramount value and according to the legend, they went from battle to battle, from victory to victory, upholding these values.While their heroism built their reputation, what confirmed their legendary status was their search for the Holy Grail.
Lancelot, the most valiant knight, was considered to be the purest of them all when he brought back the precious object to his sovereign. Thus was he granted the honour of a seat at the round table. Merlin declared: “Around this table, all in equality, will sit the most valiant knights. From this room, they will set out to seek challenges, to undo wrongs, to protect the weak and to bring down the proud.”

First Shortfilm shot with Google Glasses

Vor ein paar Tagen hat ein Fashionlabel seine Models vor, während und nach einer Show mit Google Glasses auf den Catwalk geschickt (DVF meint, das wäre kein PR-Stunt für Google gewesen… das glaube ich keine Sekunde lang, is aber auch eher wurscht), jetzt haben sie den Kurzfilm dazu veröffentlicht. Finde ich aus ein paar Gründen spannend und keine Sorge: Keiner davon hat mit Fashion zu tun. Gestern hatten wir’s noch von Innovation und dem iPhone und Apple und warum das alles superlangweilig und uninteressant ist. Google Glasses sind so ziemlich genau das Gegenteil.
Ähnlich wie bei der Einführung des iPods oder des iPhones sind die Google Glasses eine halbwegs neue Produkt-Kategorie. Man kann natürlich argumentieren, dass es POV-Kameras im professionellen Einsatz schon länger gibt (ist das so?), aber Google platziert die Glasses durchaus im Massenmarkt, da zwar bei den hedonistischen First-Irgendwas, aber ehrlich: Wenn’s die Dinger morgen zu kaufen gibt – erste Entwickler-Modelle kommen nächstes Jahr, Markteinführung ist wohl 2014 –, bin ich der erste in der Schlange. Ich meine, lest Euch mal dieses Ding von David Pogue in der New York Times durch und werdet dabei nicht ein bisschen wuschig: Google Glass and the Future of Technology.
When you actually handle these things, you can’t believe how little they weigh. Less than a pair of sunglasses, in my estimation. Glass is an absolutely astonishing feat of miniaturization and integration. Inside the right earpiece — that is, the horizontal support that goes over your ear — Google has packed memory, a processor, a camera, speaker and microphone, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi antennas, accelerometer, gyroscope, compass and a battery. All inside the earpiece.
Google has said that eventually, Glass will have a cellular radio, so it can get online; at this point, it hooks up wirelessly with your phone for an online connection.
And the mind-blowing thing is, this slim thing is the prototype. It’s only going to get smaller in future generations. “This is the bulkiest version of Glass we’ll ever make,” Babak told me.The biggest triumph — and to me, the biggest surprise — is that the tiny screen is completely invisible when you’re talking or driving or reading. You just forget about it completely. There’s nothing at all between your eyes and whatever, or whomever, you’re looking at. And yet when you do focus on the screen, shifting your gaze up and to the right, that tiny half-inch display is surprisingly immersive. It’s as though you’re looking at a big laptop screen or something.
Was ich damit sagen will: Gewöhnt Euch schonmal an die POV-Perspektive des Films oben. Da kommt noch sehr, sehr viel mehr.
Apple presents Nothing

Same Procedure as every year: Apple präsentiert ein Telefon oder ‘nen Stöpsel und 50% des Internets rasten aus. Und die andere Hälfte beschwert sich dann über die Leute, die alle Social Networks mit iPhone-Dadaismus überschwemmen (Der Adapter!) und ein paar vereinzelte (wie ich) tun so, als ob sie das alles nix anginge und es nur um ein Telefon ginge. Aber es ist ein kollektiver Internet-Clusterfuck, im positiven wie im negativen. Ich hatte das auf Twitter so formuliert: „People talking about a new Phone. People complaining about People talking about a new Phone. People talking about People complaining etc.“ und dann noch die Phrase „Recursive Apple-Loop“ erfunden, was beides nich so richtig zutrifft. Recursive Apple Clusterfuck find’ ich allerdings ganz gut.
Ernsthaft: Ich musste gestern auf Twitter solchen Blödsinn lesen wie „Improvement is the new Innovation“. Unsinn. Verbesserung ist Verbesserung, Innovation ist Innovation und ein neues Telefon von Apple ist (für mich) so interessant wie ein Korkenzieher. Ein erstes iPhone oder iPad ist interessant und innovativ, in seiner fünften Iteration interessiert das dann aber nur noch Autisten – wovon ich mich auch gar nicht ausnehmen mag. Ich hab gestern auch ein Liveblog gelesen… für fünf Minuten, oder so, während ich Chicken Vindaloo vom Inder gegessen habe. Man kann natürlich auch seriös begründen, warum das iPhone5 völlig uninteressant ist: Apple hat mit diesem Telefon bereits so ‘nen Marktdurchsatz und das Produkt steckt in seinem Innovationszyklus irgendwo im vorderen mittleren Hinterteil (bei dreifünftel wollte ich sagen), wo eben nur noch eine kleinteilige Produktvariation (Der Adapter!) möglich ist, oder halt neue Märkte über bürokratische Mechanismen (Verträge mit Anbietern) erschlossen werden. Nicht aber durch tatsächliche Innovationen. Und nur die sind für mich interessant. Deshalb: Apple presents nothing.

“56 Broken Kindle Screens” is a print on demand paperback that consists of found photos depicting broken Kindle screens. The Kindle is Amazon’s e-reading device which is by default connected to the company’s book store.
The book takes as its starting point the peculiar aesthetic of broken E Ink displays and serves as an examination into the reading device’s materiality. As the screens break, they become collages composed of different pages, cover illustrations and interface elements.
Chinese iPhone Riots
Gestern Nacht sollten in Peking die ersten iPhones4S im Apple Store verkauft werden, vor dem Laden versammelte sich eine Meute von rund 1000 Leuten und dann kam die schlechte Nachricht, dass sie das Handy nicht wie angekündigt verkaufen könnten. Also haben sie den Apple Store mit Eiern beschmissen und die Polizei kloppte sich mit Apple-Fanboys. Von Reuters:
Police dragged some people away and photos appeared on the Chinese blogosphere of a man who had brought raw eggs in a plastic bag handing them out before people heaved them at the store’s tall glass windows.
“We’re suffering from cold and hunger,” a man in his 20s shouted to Reuters Television. “They said they’re not going to sell to us. Why? Why?”
“I got in line around 11 p.m., and beyond the line the plaza was chock full with people,” said Huang Xiantong, 26, outside the store. “Around 5 a.m. the crowds in the plaza broke through and the line disappeared entirely. Everyone was fighting, several people were hurt,” said Huang, who wanted to buy a new iPhone for his girlfriend. “The police just started hitting people. They were just brawling.”

Given that ghosts are frequently thought of as non-physical beings that can only be seen by people like Jennifer Love Hewitt or Haley Joel Osment, one might wonder how regular human technology could possibly register their presence. We’re told that it all comes down to what people are made of.
“We’re built out of energy – atoms and molecules,” says Rona Anderson, co-partner in the nonprofit Paranormal Explorers ghost-hunting group, which operates out of Edmonton, Canada. “I just think it’s an internal piece of us that stays when our bodies deteriorate.”
“When somebody dies, do they go into another dimension, with a very thin wall?” asks her partner, Ben Myckan. “I think that’s sort of what it is. You can’t destroy energy, it’s just in a different dimension.”
So apparently, it’s not so much about looking for lost souls as it is looking for unexplained energy, or evidence of its manipulation.
