Redditor Kconn04 hat sich vor fünf Jahren ein UV-Tattoo stechen lassen. Mittlerweile ist das Ding verblasst und mit Allergien wegen der ganzen Chemikalien in UV-Tinte hat der Mann wohl ganz einfach Schwein gehabt:

How To make Kryptonite-Sushi from bio-engineered Glowing Fish
In diesem Video erklären zwei Leute, wie man leuchtendes Kryptonit-Sushi aus genetisch manipulierten Fischen macht. Das Projekt ist Teil einer Ausstellung namens „Edible: The Taste of Things To Come“ in der Science Gallery in Dublin und dort kann man sich neben vielen anderen Sachen auch noch das Konzept zu 3D-gedruckten Insekten-Cookies anschauen. 3D-Gedruckte essbare Space-Shuttles und Schokolade hatte ich hier schon, also gehen natürlich auch 3D-gedruckte Kekse aus zermanschten Insekten. Insects Au Gratin, by a group of British artists, suggests that 3D printing is the technology that could make entomophagy (the consumption of insects) catch on. It has an ecological dimension – crickets take four times less energy to produce than beef – even if it also has a pretty strong yuck factor. But extruding the insect protein into alternative shapes could help to eliminate that. Given what we already do with foods the idea of munching on cricket nuggets may not be as far-fetched as it sounds.

Genetically modified glow-in-the-dark cats not only make stylish, futuristic pets, but now provide insight into feline AIDS as well. The cats were injected with an antiviral gene from a rhesus macaque monkey that helps them resist feline AIDS, along with one that produces the fluorescent protein GFP. The latter gene, which is naturally produced by jellyfish, is regularly used in genetic engineering as a way to mark cells. If the cats aren’t glowing, then the AIDS-resisting gene might not have made it into the cell either.

Glow-In-The-Dark-Dog with a genetic Lightswitch
Koreanische Forscher haben gestern einen Hund vorgestellt, der im Dunkeln leuchtet und dabei helfen soll, Heilmittel für Alzheimer zu finden. Was sich zunächst wie eine weitere reine WTF-Science-Story anhört, offenbart sich bei genauerem Lesen als durchaus noch problematischer, als sie hinsichtlich von Genmanipulation ohnehin bereits ist, denn der Trigger, der den leuchtenden Hund an- und ausknippst, kann und soll dazu genutzt werden, tödliche Krankheiten an- und im besten Fall auszuschalten. Im Erfolgsfall ist man einer Heilung ein Stückchen näher.
Ich habe bei Tierexperimenten eine gar nicht so klare Haltung. Einerseits: Jedes Leben, dass sich selbst erhalten will, hat meiner Meinung nach ein mindestens rudimentäres Bewusstsein und ist damit unantastbar. Das gilt selbst für Fliegen. Andererseits kann ich Tierversuche, bei denen bahnbrechende technologische Fortschritte erzielt werden – neurowissenschaftliche Versuche mit Gehirn-Implantaten bei Affen, bei denen gedankengesteuerte Roboter-Prothesen etwa – durchaus… hm… ertragen. Ich denke, dieses Experiment kann man durchaus den letzteren hinzuzählen.

Business & Health: Scientists Create Glowing Dog in South Korea
The team from Seoul National University (SNU) said the genetically modified female beagle named Tegon glows under ultraviolet light if given a doxycycline antibiotic, according to the report.
A test was completed two years ago by the same researchers. Lee Byeong-chun, the man behind the quartet of self-illuminating beagles in 2009, has taken science to the next level by finding that the ability to glow can be turned on or off by adding a drug to the dog’s food.

“The creation of Tegon opens new horizons since the gene injected to make the dog glow can be substituted with genes that trigger fatal human diseases,” the news agency quoted lead researcher Lee Byeong-chun as saying.
He said the dog was created using the somatic cell nuclear transfer technology that the university team used to make the world’s first cloned dog, Snuppy, in 2005.
The scientist said that because there are 268 illnesses that humans and dogs have in common, creating dogs that artificially show such symptoms could aid treatment methods for diseases that afflict humans.

Aaaaaaw! Der Designer von Daft Punks Glow-Robot-Anzügen, die natürlich eine Hommage an Tron sind, hat ein Tutorial zum selbermachen bei Instructables geschrieben. Ich denke, wir werden demnächst sehr viele Tron Guys mit leuchtenden Klamotten sehen.
As a lighted costume designer, I get a lot of questions from people who want to know how to make their own EL wire costumes (many of them seeking to mimic the immensely popular Daft Punk red robot suits, which I illuminated for their Alive 2007 tour). I don’t have time to help everyone individually, so I thought I’d consolidate my advice into one instructable. Hopefully this will help you understand the steps involved in this labor-intensive process, and get you started with your own lighted clothing projects.
Rather than describe how to make a single specific design, I am trying to make these instructions fairly general so you can create your own EL wire layout for almost any type of clothing, although many of my example photos refer to lighted coats. Also, since EL wire is very fragile in situations where it is flexed repeatedly, a lot of these tips will focus on methods for improving durability and getting the longest possible life out of the garment.
