Martha Cooper (Subway Art, Graffiti-Legende, Wikipedia) feiert heute runden Geburtstag und befreundete Writer wollen das mit einer Überraschung per Instagram feiern. Just schreibt mir: „Martha Cooper feuert heute einen grossen runden Geburtstag und da sie seit Wochen total auf Instagram abfährt, hatten wir uns gedacht ihr Geburtstagswuensche und Sketche auf Instagram zu laden und per Hashtag #happybdaysnapz zu sammeln.“ Haut rein!

We are thinking of having the pictures made into a hand-bound book for Marty, and maybe make an online gallery with all the pictures up later on.
The Square: Documentary about the Egypt Revolution

Toller Trailer zur Doku „The Square“ über die Revolution in Ägypten vor zwei Jahren. Der Film hatte grade Premiere auf dem Sundance Filmfestival und sucht jetzt per Kickstarter die Finanzierung für ‘nen finalen Schnitt und Distribution.
The time to tell this story is now. Egypt’s revolution is not over. From songs to graffiti, the Egyptian revolution is not just a flash, its a movement. That is why we’re making this film. To really tell the story of what happened (and is happening) in Tahrir Square, in Egypt.
As they say in the film, “No one can tell our stories except for us.” We are duty-bound to ensure that the story of Tahrir Square is told by the people who lived it.
Nebenbei behandelt der Film auch die Rolle von Streetart und Graffiti während der Proteste am Tahir Square:
Graffiti began to appear on walls around Egypt during the January 25 uprising 2 years ago. Prior to that, there was little to no street art in all of Egypt. But now, the walls of Cairo’s streets are covered in so many layers of graffiti and posters, grime and fumes, that studying the layers is like reading a book on everything these walls have witnessed. The uprising, the downfall, the unity and the coming apart are all shown in street art pieces – pieces that speak for those that do not have a voice.
Despite being perceived by the majority of Egyptians to be “pointless scribbling” on the walls, artists who got their start during the revolution have been commissioned for magazine cover art, have given lectures and been featured in documentaries about their work, including ours – The Square, an on-the-ground look at revolutionaries throughout the Tahrir uprisings.
Streetart meets Retrogames: We ❤ 8 Bit-Artshow in Hamburg
Über 40 Künstler und Streetartists zeigen in der Gruppenausstellung We ❤ 8 Bit (Facebook, FB-Event) im Island (Banksstraße 2A, 20097 Hamburg) Artworks zu Retrogames aus den 80er und 90ern, unter anderem mit alten NC-Bekannten wie Flying Förtress, Clemens Behr, Thomas Schostok oder Daim. Ich werde persönlich nicht in Hamburg sein, aber mein Buddy Nils wird auf der Vernissage ein paar Fotos machen. Wenn die Ausstellung soviel kann, wie ich vermute, kommt da nochmal was.
Wer erinnert sich nicht gern an seinen ersten Computer? Damals haben wir mit dem C64, den Spielekonsolen der ersten Generation oder auch dem Heimcomputer die ersten digitalen Welten erkundet. Besonders die grobpixeligen Spiele haben dabei unsere Fantasie beflügelt. Und das tun sie noch heute.
„WE ❤ 8BIT“ ist eine Gruppenausstellung, in der Künstler aus verschiedensten Bereichen vertreten sind, z.B. Bildende Künstler, Illustratoren, Graffitkünstler und auch Grafikdesigner:

Stanley Donwoods doomed Hollywood as GIF-Graffiti by Insa
Insas GIF-ITTIs gehen regelmäßig durchs Netz, jetzt hat sie oder er Stanley Donwoods (der Mann, der die Radiohead-Artworks malt) Cover für das neue Album von Thom Yorkes Band Atoms for Peace auf das Büro von XL Records in Los Angeles gepinselt und daraus ein animiertes GIF gemacht.
Longtime Radiohead and Thom Yorke collaborator, Donwood, created the artwork for the Atoms For Peace album, a scene of armageddon in modern Los Angeles. This was interpreted by INSA as a piece of his patented GIF-ITI. INSA painted the Atoms For Peace artwork on to the XL office in Los Angeles a number of times, each a different frame of animation, to create a real life GIF. […]
INSA on the GIF: “My challenge was to take two very static items, a beautiful lino-cut and a less beautiful box of a building, and bring them to life. After a week of sweating in the Los Angeles late summer sun re-painting the whole building several times i got there. Animated as a continuous GIF it may only live online but some would argue that is where most now live their lives…”

Reverse Graffiti Marker
Ein Marker von Suck.uk den man mit Seifenwasser befüllt um Drecksflächen zu taggen. Die Idee basiert auf Alexandre Orions fünf Jahre altem Reverse Graffiti, der hatte damals mit nem Reiniger Skulls in von Autoabgasen vollgesifften Tunnels gemalt und wurde für die Säuberungsaktion prompt von der Polizei angehalten, hier das Video von damals. Der Marker ist natürlich nur ein relativ flacher Abklatsch der Aktion, aber die Idee ist nach wie vor so super, dass sogar der Abklatsch davon ein bisschen was kann.

Ich liebe Spirograph und Narcélio Grud hat sich jetzt einen für Cans gebaut. Funktioniert eher so mittelprächtig, aber dennoch tolle Idee.
Disney and the Weird-Artshow
Das Graffiti-Kollektiv Weird hat in italien ein sehr tolles Psychedelic-Disney-Piece an die Wände gesprüht und in ein paar Tagen eröffnen sie eine Ausstellung in Berlin. Attila von Weird schreibt mir: „Wir sind 10 Graffitikünstler die sich auf das Malen verrückter Character spezialisiert haben. Wir eröffnen am 21. September im Berliner Neurotitan unsere erste große Soloausstellung. Dort wird es dann eine Menge lustiger und abgedrehter Bilder zu sehen geben.
THE WEIRD ist ein Zusammenschluss von 10 jungen, international aufstrebenden Künstlern und Illustratoren, aus Deutschland und Österreich. Die Gruppe wurde nach zahlreichen gemeinsamen Ausstellungen und Wandmalereien 2011 gegründet und versucht in den Bereichen Malerei, Comic, Installation, Muralism, Urban Art, Character Design und Illustration neue Wege zu finden und Maßstäbe zu setzen.
Hauptaugenmerk gilt dabei großflächigen Wandmalereien und spontanen Kollaborationen der Künstler. Auch wenn der Graffitieinfluss der Künstler hier spürbar ist, fühlt sich die Gruppe im Popsurrealismus verortet. Die Bildinhalte und Themen, des Kollektivs sind figurativ, auf den ersten Blick oft verspielt und verträumt, gleichzeitig aber auch ironisch und provokativ. Deutlich sind surrealistische Einflüsse gepaart mit einer Ästhetik des bizarr-komischen. Dies charakterisiert auch der Name: The Weird meint die Verrücktheit, das leicht wahnsinnige in den Figuren die die Gruppe auf den Wänden ins Leben ruft. Die gemeinsame Gruppenausstellung im Neurotitan ist die erste große Soloshow von THE WEIRD seit ihrer Gründung.

Tolles Feature von World of Photography TV (ne 80er ABC-Serie, die grade superviele Clips bei Youtube hochladen) mit Martha Cooper und Henry Chalfant bei der Arbeit. Es geht natürlich um die Entstehung ihres Graffiti-Klassikers Subway Art (den man hier auf Issuu lesen kann).
Moebius/MCA-Tribute Mural
DJ Food hat ein drei Wände eines Hauses bedeckendes Mural in London fotografiert, das vor allem Moebius, aber auch Adam Yauch Tribut zollt: „An amazing, but very hard to photograph, mural dedicated to Moebius that wraps round three sides of a building in Shoreditch, London. Featuring many scenes and images he created in his lifetime and also a little MCA dedication too.“
Blockly: Googles visual Programming Language and the Coded Penis-Graffito
Google hat eine Programmiersprache zum Zusammenklicken vorgestellt: Blockly. Ziel ist, damit die Prinzipien von Coding jedermann zugänglich zu machen. Von Wired: “Blockly lets you build applications by piecing together small graphical objects in much the same way you’d piece together Legos. Each visual object is also a code object — a variable or a counter or an “if-then” statement or the like — and as you piece them to together, you create simple functions. And as you piece the functions together, you create entire applications — say, a game where you guide a tiny figurine through a maze.”

Ein MCA-Tribute-Mural in Midwood, Brooklyn, wo die Beasties ihre erste Show als Punk Band in einer High School gespielt haben.
