Das hervorragende Blog Trip City hat anlässlich des morgen erscheinenden (bei uns am 1. Mai) posthum veröffentlichten Comics von Harvey Pekar gleich drei tolle Postings am Start: Anatomy of an American Splendor Cover, einen Podcast mit Pekars Frau Joyce Brabner, den Zeichnern Joseph Remnant, Jeff Newelt und Dean Haspiel. Dazu noch ein großartiges Fotocomic mit allem, was man über Pekar wissen muss.
Harvey Pekar’s Cleveland begins as a work of non-fiction. A municipal history. Indeed, the first third of the book barely features Harvey at all, save for an occasional panel in which he is depicted shuffling stooped along the streets, filling in the narration. It is fair to say the first character we meet in this story is the city itself. While not autobiographical in the sense we have come to expect from Pekar, the story of Cleveland is essential to fully understanding ”our man“.
A relative newcomer, but more than qualified, Joseph Remnant seems to particularly relish rendering both Harvey and the book’s namesake in a unique, gritty, underground style well suited to Pekar’s curmudgeonly disposition. Remnant offers one of the finest portrayals of Harvey since Robert Crumb, placing him in one deeply researched Cleveland cityscape after another. While they rely heavily on narration throughout, Pekar and Remnant are adept at using the images to advance the story, avoiding the pitfall of merely depicting verbatim what’s been said in the caption.

Harvey Pekars Frau finanziert grade eine Statue als Memorial für ihren viel zu früh gestorbenen Mann, der nach Robert Crumb wohl der wichtigste Underground-Comickünstler war. Im Video oben erzählt Alan Moore ein bisschen von seinem Kumpel und motiviert nochmal, an der Kickstarter-Runde teilzunehmen, auch wenn die Summe fast schon beisammen ist. Und ich liebe Alan Moore Slang.
A way to celebrate comics as art and literature at a Cleveland Heights public library. A literary landmark, a desk that’s always filled with paper and pencils for people to sit and write or draw comics at the same place where Harvey Pekar liked to work.
Mounted on the desk, a sculpted bronze comic book “page.” Stepping out from a panel, Harvey– using his semi celebrity to focus on the creative possibilities of the art form he opened up to so many people. On the reverse, gridded into bronze ruled “panels,” a giant slate storyboard that looks very much the way Harvey always started his own scripts. (He wrote and drew stick figures, just like Paul Giamatti in that movie.)

Harvey Pekar meets The Thing
Ich habe gestern den dritten Band von Marvels Strange Tales II durchgelesen (Marvels Strange Tales sind Stories mit Helden aus dem Marvel-Universum, erzählt und gezeichnet von Indie-Künstlern) und der enthält eine Story von Harvey Pekar, legendärer Comic-Autor, der letztes Jahr viel zu früh verstorben ist.
Der ganze Band ist Pekar gewidmet und dürfte nur einer der ersten von vielen dem grumpy Old Man der Comics gewidmeten Bücher sein. Die Story aus Strange Tales II, in der Pekar auf Ben „The Thing“ Grimm trifft (der dort übrigens einen ziemlich deutlichen Hinweis darauf gibt, dass meine Theorie richtig ist und Das Ding derjenige Charakter der Fantastic Four wird, der abtreten wird), nach dem Klick.

Harvey Pekar, neben seinem Freund Robert Crumb einer der bekanntesten Underground-Comicautoren der USA, verstarb heute im Alter von 70 Jahren, seine Frau Joyce Brabner fand ihn in ihrem Zuhause in Cleveland tot auf.

Gestern wurde Harvey Pekar, Underground-Comiczeichner aus Cleveland und Schöpfer von American Splendor (Wikipedia), 70 Jahre alt. Deshalb hat das Pekar-Project 70 Zeichner gefragt, ob sie Portraits von Pekar anfertigen würden.
