The Art of Punk (1): Black Flag

Up + Photocopied: Instant Art Of The Punk Rock Movement.

On the first episode of “The Art of Punk” we dissect the art of the legendary Black Flag. From the iconic four bars symbols, to the many coveted and collected gig flyers, singles, and band t-shirts, all depicting the distinctive Indian ink drawn image and text by artist Raymond Pettibon. We start of in Los Angeles talking to two founding members singer Keith Morris, and bass player Chuck Dukowski, about what the scene was like in 1976 – setting the stage for the band’s formation, as well as the bands name, and the creation of the iconic four bars symbol. Raymond Pettibon talks with us from his New York art studio. Back in LA we meet with Flea, from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, about how the art, the music, and that early LA scene impacted his own life and career. To wrap it all up we sit and talk at length, with Henry Rollins, at MOCA Grand Ave in Los Angeles, about all of the above and more. […]
In addition to profiling the artists, the series includes intimate interviews with former band members, notable artists, and celebrities who have been heavily influenced by the art of punk rock including Jello Biafra, Tim Biskup, Scott Campbell, Chuck Dukowski, Flea, Steve Olson, Penny Rimbaud, Henry Rollins, Owen Thornton, and Gee Vaucher.
MUCH EVERY SINGLE BLACK FLAG FLYER DESIGNED BY RAYMOND PETTIBON.
In my opinion, punk flyers should not be behind glass. All my flyers, thousands of them, sit in stacked piles around my office, all around me. I enjoy having people look through them the way I do—grabbing them from stacks, touching them one at a time. Sometimes you find letters written on the backs of them. I always put my favorite flyer on top of the stack to show it off: Black Flag, Husker Du, Vicious Circle and Double Cross at the Tool & Die on Jan 8th, 1984 is my favorite one right now. It’s sitting one on top of the pile. my way of putting a frame around it I guess.
Reality 86′d: Black Flags final Tour-Doc

REALITY ’86′D
(Shot in 1986 and completed by director David Markey in 1991 for We Got Power Films, approx. 62 min., Super 8 film)Three bands and crew (a combined total of 13 individuals), 2 Dodge Ram extended cab vans, one equipment truck, one PA system traverse the continental US for six months. Greg Ginn along with Henry Rollins, Cel Revulta, and Anthony Martinez comprise the final line up of the band. Featuring behind the scenes proceedings and live performances from Black Flag, Painted Willie, and Gone (Ginn’s side project, then featuring Sim Cain and Andrew Weiss (later of the Rollins Band) . David Markey was along for the entire trip as the drummer / singer for Painted Willie (with Phil Newman & Vic Makauskas), documenting the six month tour with his Super-8 camera as it happened. Also features roadie Joe (“Planet Joe”) Cole, soundmen Davo Claasen and Dave “Ratman” Levine, and the tour manager who kept it all together, Mitch Bury. A crucial turning point in American underground rock. The end of the line for a trail blazing American band.
Henry and Glenn forever: X-mas Special
(Youtube Direktxmas, via Unfug)
Starring super-notorious musclebound punk/metaldudes Glenn Danzig and Henry Rollins (with a little help from super-notorious soft-rockdudes Hall and Oates) Henry & Glenn Forever is a love story to end all love stories! The premise of this Cantankerous Titles-released comic is explained at the front of the zine: “Henry and Glenn are very good ‘friends.’ They are also ‘room mates.’ Daryl and John live next door. They are satanists.”
What follows is ultra-metal violence and cryfest diary entries, cringing self-doubt and mega-hilarious emo-meltdowns. Who knew Danzig was such a vulnerable, self-conscious sweety-pie? Who knew Rollins was such a caring spouse? Who knew Hall and Oates were so infernally evil—yet so considerate?

Henry Rollins and the Warrior Gene
(Explorer Direktviolence, via Stereogum)
Explorers Inside the Warrior Gene examines some scary new science that links a single gene with violent behavior. Ex-punk rocker, turned commentator, Henry Rollins has struggled with feelings of aggression his whole life. Hes on a mission to find out if his rage is the product of his upbringing or if its in his genes. Henry recruits a colorful cast of characters in his quest for the truth: Outlaw bikers, mixed martial arts fighters, Buddhist monks, gang-bangers and the most aggressive NFL linebacker of them all, Dick Butkus. A DNA test reveals which of them carries the Warrior Gene and the results provide an extraordinary insight into the human psyche. This gripping human journey seeks to answer some of mans oldest questions like who are we and who controls our destiny?
Henry & Glenn forever: Comic über Glenn Danzig & Henry Rollins als Pärchen (und Hall & Oates als Satanisten)

Super!

Here comes the trouble… «Henry & Glenn Forever»

Henry Rollins featuring The Techno Viking (Steve Porter remix)
(Youtube Direktviking, via Crackunit)
Als ob der Original-Rant von Herny Rollins nicht schon witzig genug wäre (und by the way: totally misses the point), hier jetzt der Henry Rollins-Techno-Rant remixed mit dem Techno Viking. ZOMG!
Nickelback
