In conjunction with our very special June 2013 issue, Beastie Boys: A Visual History + Tribute to MCA, we bring you excerpts from some our interviews with Beastie album cover artists from Polly Wog Stew to Hot Sauce Committee Part Two! We find the inside stories of how each album came to fruition through the experiences and artwork of each artist that is now part of the Beastie Boys canon.
We speak to Cey Adams, Haze, Arabella Field, World B Omes, Glen E Friedman, Ricky Powell, Todd James, Mike Mills, Matteo Pericoli, Bill McMullen, Bruce Davidson, Alex Grey, Kiino Villand, Sunny Bak… and, we interview Adrock of the Beastie Boys as he gave us the inside story and behind-the-scenes look at how each album cover was selected, from inside the band.

Vor genau einem Jahr erlag Adam „MCA“ Yauch seinem Krebsleiden. Heute an seinem ersten Todestag findet in Brooklyn der MCA Day statt, gestern morgen hat man dort den Adam Yauch Park eröffnet und weil wir alle nicht dort sein können, lasst uns Ärsche im Namen des MCA treten mit dem kompletten Wahnsinns-Livegig in Glasgow von 1999, gibt’s hier als MP3. Unfassbare Show, so eine Band werden wir nie wieder kriegen. Und dass der Mann ohnehin unsterblich ist, wissen bereits kleine Mädchen:
The centerpieces of “MCA Day” will be the various visual installations displayed throughout the space. Attendees will get to see rare photographs of the band by renown music/skateboard photographer Glen E. Friedman who shot MCA, Michael “Mike D” Diamond, and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz before the trio became superstars. Pics by Sunny Bak, the photographer who captured the iconic image of the Beasties in front of the World’s Fair Globe, will also be a part of the exhibit.
Brooklyn artist and co-creator of the Jam Master Jay Foundation for Music’s “Jam Awards” Michael “Mr Kaves” McLeer will show some of his work, and fans will have the opportunity to present their pieces as well. The Beastie Boys fanthology project, Keep It On and On, will be showing artwork created by fans from around the world. For those people who will not be able to make it to New York City, Keep In On and On will run the images on their Facebook page throughout the day and provide free downloadable PDFs of the art.

Beastie Boys, the Book
Mike D und Ad Rock haben einen Vertrag für eine Beastie Boys-Biographie unterschrieben, das Teil soll im Herbst 2015 erscheinen und sich stilistisch am Werk der Beasties orientieren.
The Beastie Boys are “interested in challenging the form and making the book a multidimensional experience,” Ms. Grau said in an interview. “There is a kaleidoscopic frame of reference, and it asks a reader to keep up.”
The book, to be edited by the hip-hop journalist Sacha Jenkins, will be loosely structured as an oral history. It will also have contributions by other writers, as well as a strong visual component. Ms. Grau and Luke Janklow, the group’s agent, both compared it to Grand Royal, the Beastie Boys’ acclaimed but short-lived magazine in the 1990s, which explored some of its wide-ranging pop-culture interests with curiosity and snark.

Tupac Memorial-Aligator guards 34 Pounds of Pot
Ein paar Polizisten haben bei einer Routinekontrolle 34 Pfund Gras gefunden. Und einen Aligator namens „Mr. Teeth“, der das Teil bewachte. Den Aligator hatte sein Besitzer im Gedenken an Tupac gekauft, weil’s geht.
While at a home on the 19000 block of Mount Jasper Drive, they found 34 pounds of processed dried marijuana and a live — but ill — 5-foot alligator in a Plexiglas tank in the bedroom. The reptile, named “Mr. Teeth,” acted as a deterrent against marijuana thieves, said sheriff’s Sgt. J.D. Nelson.
Mr. Teeth’s owner, Assif Mayr, 32, got the alligator in 1996 “to commemorate the death of rapper Tupac Shakur,” Nelson said.

Fotoband: Deichkind – Eine Prise Mythos
Vor ein paar Wochen erschien im Gestalten-Verlag ein Bildband von Fotograf Nikolaus Brande, der Deichkind seit 5 Jahren begleitet. Ich und deutscher Hip Hop sind ein noch spezielleres Thema, als ich und Hip Hop. Aber Deichkind mag ich sehr, zumindest seit ihrem Stilbruch Mitte der 00ers und nicht zuletzt deshalb, weil man mit dieser Band einen wirklich schicken Fotoband auf die Reihe kriegt, der dann auch ein bisschen durchgeknallter ist, als herkömmliche Konzert-Fotografie.
“Impulsive Menschen kennen keine Grenzen.” So ungefähr lautet das Motto einer Band, die es schafft sich ständig und maßlos neu zu definieren. Der beim Gestalten Verlag erschienene Bildband Deichkind: Eine Prise Mythos des Fotografen Nikolaus Brade dokumentiert den Werdegang eines der momentan spannendsten und erfolgreichsten Live-Acts Deutschlands. Die Mitglieder präsentieren sich schleierhaft, theatralisch und verkleidet und tragen als feste Einheit das Performance-Phänomen Deichkind durch die ausverkauften Konzerthallen des Landes. Gestalten.tv sprach mit den kontrolliert durchgeknallten Deichkindern über Selbstinszenierung, Anonymität, Größenwahn und Abnehmen. Die limitierte, handsignierte Sonderausgabe des Buchs ist demnächst erhältlich.

Deichkind sind ein Gesamtkunstwerk. Die deutsche Band kultiviert eine eigenwillige Mischung aus Hip-Hop und Electroclash, aus hedonistischer Energie und sarkastischer Provokation. Ihre Konzerte und Kostüme sind legendäre akustische und visuelle Spektakel. Dada trifft auf Baumarkt, und Kraftwerk trifft auf Dead Kennedys. Da bleibt kein Auge trocken.
Der Fotograf Nikolaus Brade hat die Band in den vergangenen fünf Jahren auf Tourneen und im Studio begleitet. Er wurde Teil des Deichkind-Wanderzirkus, fotografierte vor und hinter der Bühne, erlebte Höhen und Tiefen des Banddaseins hautnah mit. Dabei entstand statt der geplanten, klassisch-objektiven Reportage eine anarchische Bildcollage, eine Art Kopfkino für alle, die schon mal auf einem Konzert der Band waren.

Die Fatboys haben im Herbst letzten Jahres ihr Debut remastert und neu aufgelegt, äußerst passend als Pizza-Vinyl in einer Pizza-Box.

Neuroscience of Freestyle Rap
Wissenschaftler haben die Gehirne von Rappern beim Freestylen gescannt. Neuroscience of Flow.
Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), Liu, Braun and the rest of the team scanned the brain of 12 freestyle rap artists as they rapped over an 8-bar musical track created by Rizik-Baer. Rappers were first tasked to improvise rhyming lyrics and rhythmic patterns. In a second trial, they performed a well-rehearsed set of memorized lyrics.
During the freestyle segment, researchers saw increased activity in the brain’s medial prefrontal cortex but a decreased activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal region.
“The medial part of the frontal cortex plays a role in self motivation and the integration of information,” said Liu. “On the other hand, we know that the lateral part of the frontal cortex actually plays a role in attention, self-monitoring and other executive functions.”

Ich fahre jetzt gleich los zum ersten Deutschlandgig der Death Grips in Berlin und lass mir von denen das Gehirn wegblasen. Passend dazu oben ihr komplettes Konzert vom 17.
