The Settlers of Cannibal Island
Jamestown Island, Virginia, war die erste permanente Kolonie englischer Siedler in Nord-Amerika. Und dort haben sie bei Ausgrabungen im Keller einer alten Küche die Überreste eines 14jährigen Mädchens gefunden und die weisen ziemlich eindeutig kannibalistische Spuren auf. Ob die USA nun ihren Thanksgiving Feiertag den historischen Fakten anpassen, bleibt allerdings mehr als fraglich.
Owsley and his research team identified a number of features on the skull and tibia that indicated the individual was cannibalized. Four shallow chops to the forehead represent a failed first attempt to open the skull. The back of the head was then struck by a series of deep, forceful chops from a small hatchet or cleaver. The final blow split the cranium open. Sharp cuts and punctures mark the sides and bottom of the mandible, reflecting efforts to remove tissue from the face and throat using a knife.
“The desperation and overwhelming circumstances faced by the James Fort colonists during the winter of 1609–1610 are reflected in the postmortem treatment of this girl’s body,” said Owsley. “The recovered bone fragments have unusually patterned cuts and chops that reflect tentativeness, trial and complete lack of experience in butchering animal remains. Nevertheless, the clear intent was to dismember the body, removing the brain and flesh from the face for consumption.”

Sigmund Freud Script-Font
Harald Geisler aus Frankfurt finanziert sich grade eine Umsetzung von Sigmund Freuds Handschrift als digitaler Script-Font. Schönes Projekt!
To make the Sigmund Freud typeface look vivid, the font will be programmed to produce variations or ‘alternates’ during writing. Two different ‘o’ have to be drawn and stored in the font’s memory. In the next step the font is programmed‚ to replace the second ‘o’ with the alternate ‘o’.
Every language has letter combinations that occur more often than others. In English (counting the complete text of James Joyce’s Ulysses) the top three pairs are ‘he’ ‘th’ ‘in’. While in German (analyzing Goethe’s Faust I) the most found letter pairs are ‘ch’ ‘en’ and ‘er’ (French: ‘es’ ‘le’ ‘ou’, Spanish ‘ue’ ‘de’ ‘en’)
To make the Sigmund Freud font look as handwritten as possible I will include alternates for the most common letter combinations in English, Spanish, German and French as alternates into the font.

Photographer Zhang Yaxin was one of the only people in China with access to color film during the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-76). Zhang was a photographer for Xinhua News Agency when he was chosen by Jiang Qing, the wife of Chairman Mao Zedong, to photograph the performances of the model operas she developed after the Communist Party leaders banned traditional Peking opera for being too bourgeois.

This series is an experiment where a dictator, a psycho, a murderer (sometimes they are the whole package) or even a suspicious figure from real life is mashed with a comics bad guy – strangely related some way or the other with his counterpart.
The depressing thing? Realising that if the comic book supervillains were actually the ones threatening real life, the world wouldn’t be such a bad place.

Finding Vivian Maier – Doku-Trailer

Toller Trailer zur kommenden Doku über Vivian Maier, die in den 50ern und 60ern bis in die 90er Jahre hunderttausende Fotografien auf den Straßen von New York anfertigte und die sie nie veröffentlichte. Zufällig stieß Historiker John Maloof auf die Negative und entdeckte damit nichts weniger als einen Schatz. Die ganze Story steht hier, Snip von der Website zum Film:
Taking snapshots into the late 1990′s, Maier would leave behind a body of work comprising over 100,000 negatives. Additionally Vivian’s passion for documenting extended to a series of homemade documentary films and audio recordings. Interesting bits of Americana, the demolition of historic landmarks for new development, the unseen lives of ethnics and the destitute, as well as some of Chicago’s most cherished sites were all meticulously catalogued by Vivian Maier.
A free spirit but also a proud soul, Vivian became poor and was ultimately saved by three of the children she had nannied earlier in her life. Fondly remembering Maier as a second mother, they pooled together to pay for an apartment and took the best of care for her. Unbeknownst to them, one of Vivian’s storage lockers was auctioned off due to delinquent payments. In those storage lockers lay the massive hoard of negatives Maier secretly stashed throughout her lifetime.

According to Kohfeldt, the toilet came off of Hitler’s biggest private yacht, the Aviso Grille, which was between 400 and 500 feet long, and at the time one of the biggest private boats in existence. “He wanted to ride it down the Thames in London and go live in Windsor Palace when he invaded,” Kohfeldt told me on a subzero morning last week as he pulled a sink—also from the ship, and now in pieces—out of a box and laid them out for me to examine each of the maker’s stamps and faucets. Another resident of Florence, Dick Glass—an expert on Hitler’s yacht—told me that the ship was armed, had a crew of 245 men, a private room for Eva Braun, and was bigger than J.P. Morgan’s ship Corsair. The Aviso Grille also played a significant role in one particular moment in history: Hitler’s Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz stood on the deck of the ship on May 1, 1945, and gave the first word of the Führer’s death and took command of Germany.
After the war ended, the Aviso Grille was taken to the United States and ended up in the hands of New Jersey shipyard owner Harry Doan, who illegally charged visitors 25 cents to board and tour Hitler’s Yacht. However, according to Glass, both Doan and the federal government wanted to prevent the ship from becoming a memorial to Hitler, and so it was scrapped in Doan’s salvage yard in the early 1950s.
At that point, Sam Carlani needed a new toilet. Doan, his close friend and poker buddy, told him he had one available.

Mich nerven die ganzen Apokalypsenwitze ja schon seit gestern, deshalb kopiere ich mir die besten davon jetzt hier rein, den meisten Kram finde ich aber eher so… naja. Ich hab’ mir vorhin ja auch mal die Wikipedia-Seite zum Maya-Kalender angeschaut und dort tatsächlich nachgelesen, was da los sein soll. Es ist so: Heute springt der Kalender im 13. Baktun-Tyklus auf seinen Ausgangswert zurück. Ist ein kleines bisschen so, wie das Zählen im binären System, nur anders.
Das Datum der Schöpfung im Kalender der Maya war der 13.0.0.0.0 4 Ahau 8 Cumku, heute allerdings ist der 13.0.0.0.0 4 Ahau 3 Kankin und zu diesem Datum heisst es im Inschriftenmonument 6 bei Palenque, „dass an diesem Tag die Gottheit Bolon Yokte’ K’uh in einem großen Akt der Bekleidung und Vorstellung (eines Amtsträgers) auftreten wird“. Wenn also heute Frau Merkel mit ihren Mr.Burns-Fingern vor die Presse tritt und irgendwas Komisches erzählt, dann wisster Bescheid: Die CDU ist der Untergang.

Tomorrow marks the end of the 13th cycle of the ancient Mayan calendar, giving rise to rumors about the end of the world. Worries about a looming apocalypse are nothing new in human history, but 21st century reactions to the possible destruction of the planet (or human civilization) vary widely, from “preppers” who cultivate self-sufficiency, to groups offering prayerful wishes, to entrepreneurs who have found a growing market for their survival gear. Regarding tomorrow’s fateful date, the descendents of the Mayans themselves appear to regard the milestone as simply marking the end of an era, not the entire world.

200 Jahre Märchen der Gebrüder Grimm
Es war einmal vor ganz genau 200 Jahren, da veröffentlichten die zwei Brüder Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm den ersten Band ihrer Sammlung von Sagen und Märchen, die sie in den vergangenen sechs Jahren aus mündlichen Überlieferungen zusammengetragen und überarbeitet hatten. Damit begründeten sie nicht nur die Märchenforschung, sondern sicherten die Überlieferung uralter Sagen und Mythen aus dem deutschen Sprachraum bis weit in die Zukunft, ihre Märchensammlungen sind ohne Zweifel einer der wichtigsten Beiträge zur deutschen Literatur überhaupt.
In meiner Familie gab’s natürlich ein Märchenbuch und zwar genau das rechts, „Die schönsten Märchen der Brüder Grimm“ mit Illustrationen von Herbert Lentz aus dem Jahr 1972. Daraus hat mir meine Oma immer vorgelesen, so wie wahrscheinlich jedem anderen Kind auch. Ich werde erst gar nicht versuchen zu beschreiben, welchen Einfluss die fantastischen Geschichten auf Kids haben, stattdessen hier meine Top10 meiner Lieblingsmärchen der Grimms, die Top3 (Gewalt, Horror und Satan) dürften regelmäßige NC-Leser nicht besonders überraschen:

Es waren einmal zwei Brüder, die hatten früh ihren Vater verloren. So war zuhause oft Schmalhans Küchenmeister. Und die beiden sollten früh ihr Geld verdienen, um ihre jüngeren Geschwister mit zu ernähren. Wenn nicht ihre Tante Kammerzofe der Fürstin gewesen wäre, so hätten sie wohl gar nicht studieren können. So aber wurden sie beide berühmte Gelehrte, die sich der Erforschung der deutschen Sprache und Literatur widmeten. Sie sammelten alte Lieder und Heldensagen, Legenden – und Märchen.

Sehr schicker Trailer zu einem Buch, das ich mir grade zulegen musste: „Pirate Organization: Lessons from the Fringes of Capitalism“ erzählt die Geschichte der Piraterie von den ersten Freibeutern auf dem indischen Ozean, über Piratenradio bis zu Anonymous und den Piraten von heute. Darüber hinaus wird wohl auch ein Ausblick auf Piraterie in der Zukunft angedeutet, Pirates in Space und sowas. Bioengineered Copyright Infringement hatten wir hier aufm Blog immerhin auch schon vor anderthalb Jahren. Spannender Trailer, superinteressant klingendes Buch, habe ich mir grade eben gekauft.

In einem Schornstein hat man das Skelett einer Taube des britischen Geheimdienstes gefunden, komplett mit verschlüsselter Nachricht am Bein und die haben sie nun zu den Kryptographen in Bletchley Park geschickt (das ist die Institution, an der Alan Turing damals den Enigma-Code geknackt hat), wo sie nun entschlüsselt wird. Die Meldung kommt von der Daily Mail, ist aber trotzdem awesome.
